My sister wants to make money online. Any suggestions to get started?

Hi,

I'm currently making a lot of money via affiliate marketing. I've learned the hard way. I've burned a lot of money, I've been frustrated, once I almost decided to quit. However, after a lot of trying and failing I've finally managed to earn money. I think it took almost 3 years..

I'm doing really well, I'm mostly building sites, monetizing them via affiliate links and getting traffic from Google and PPC. I'm also building lists and starting to create my own products.

Now my family is all over me, since they know I make a fortune. They keep asking questions:

"How do you do that?"
"If you can do, I can do that too!"
"Can you show me some guides to make money online"

etc... I'm not really into mentoring/teaching. I'm a really busy person and I just don't have time to teach basics. Plus, I know that 99,9% of people will fail anyway or quit before they make any money.

Now my sister (28 years old) has some spare time since she is being home "stuck" with her new born baby. She would like to earn money from internet as well. She is asking my advice to make $200-$300 per month from "side". However, I'm absolutely clueless how to help her...

Obviously PPC, SEO and building websites is way too hard for her. She can be a support person for some internet company, but that's all.. At least I guess so.

Any suggestions? I would really like to help her, but I just don't know how.

Why not just help her out and show her what you're doing? I'm not saying you have to hold her hand every step of the way, but wouldn't it be nice to be able to help your sister?

Maybe you could at least recommend some books, courses, websites, etc. that have helped you "make a fortune."

She would probably be like "WTF". I live in a small country, people have never heard about "Internet marketing". They tend to believe "get rich scheme"

But books, courses - that's a good idea. Thanks for that.

Probably not, but that's not a problem. I can make the investment for her.

If she's just looking for 'something to do' online to make some extra cash then I would have her check out fiverr.

See what gigs are popular that are something she could do and would be worth $4 for the 15 minutes it (hopefully) takes to do if she wants to offer something similar.

Or look at popular fiverr gigs and add more value, then instead of fiverr use ad forums like those here at WF or Linked In to find higher paying clients and do a gig for $37 or $47 that would be $5 on fiverr.

As she gets experience (or even right away) and once she has access to potential clients she could simply do service arbitrage by reselling fiverr gigs for a higher price.

Another idea would be to JV with you (so to speak) list building where she would only need minimal technical skills to set up a funnel and autoresponder. She could do all the research and work developing/finding products for her funnel. And you could lend your experience and credibility to sales pages and products.

There are lots of other ideas but these two I thought 1) does she just want piece work for extra cash or 2) How can she leverage your experience without taking time from you to 'mentor'.

There is also a great thread "What to do if you're desperate" which has many great ideas, even if you're not desperate.

A helpful index of ideas in the thread was recently posted here:
    http://www.warriorforum.com/main-int...ate-index.html

It has some good advice about using the ideas too.

Yeah, I would second Fiverr. If she is just looking to get started, she could go on the site and literally have gigs up and running by tomorrow. That is a great way to start out. If she likes that type of thing, she can step it up a notch with jobs on sites like elance or odesk. While she certainly won't make a fortune with this, I think this is the quickest way to get something going where you can actually make money without frustration and the need for a lot of technical know-how.

    OPTION 1:
If you really care about your sister, pay her $X an hour to watch what you do.

Think of a creative way, better yet, she think of a creative way to increase her value (or start on her own) from there.

    OPTION 2:
PS: There are also legit "work from home" opportunities that can pay $12-$15 per hour.

    OPTION 3
Or, try Fiverr on for size. (You can help promote her gigs if you want to make success more feasible).

I am curious what legit "work from home" opportunities exist that pay $12-$15/hr, I have never run across anything worth close to that that you didn't need special skill for or have to beat out 100's of applicants for.

There are lots of gigs you can do on fiverr that only take 10-15 minutes work at your PC. That's $16-24 an hour even without add-ons and if you don't scale.

But you do have to actually work from home and deliver the gig.

How can you not know how to help your sister?

If you are really making a fortune as you say then you are probably way ahead of most of the people who are going to reply with the same old advice.

Since you are making a "Fortune" yourself surely you must have a method, tips, tricks that you can teach your sister?

dont teach her. let her learn on her own. just give them you exact process of building a website

    product selection
    keyword research
    sizing up the compitetion
    site creation
    creating content
    building backlinks

you dont have to explain anything just tell her what to do.

    example:

product selection - go to amazon best seller find a product with atleast 10 reviews at 4/5 star rating

keyword research - search product name keyword with atleast 500 local searchs, steady local trend, and note other related keywords

    i hope this helps

I've got to agree with some of the other posters here in the fact that something is just a bit incongruent with those two statements...

Having said that, here is an Indexed list of topics generated by users here at WF of ways to make money if you are desperate. The list includes online and offline methods.

You can take everything that you learned over the past few years and show her what you did that worked and what you did that did not work.

If you can put this into a course for her, you can sell this info to others and make more money.

That way, you are helping her and having your own product that can bank you more sales and money.

She's not looking for an "income" - why not point her to a few tutorials on writing articles or some other service-type business and then introduce her to freelance sites.

With a new baby and only needing a small amount of money per month - I doubt she'd want to dive in with the time/effort needed to learn IM from the ground up right now.

I like your idea.. If you are making a fortune, share what you know in an ebook and allow your sister to learn how to market the book. If you are so rich, your sister is rich too (family first). she can input your information and you can pay her a decent hourly rate. then when the book is completed, she can get a commission from the sale of your ebook. Easy solution.

You said she has a new baby, right?

Why not set her up a simple blog and show her quickly how to type out a post (just like typing an email). Have her talk about her day with the baby, something she learned, a product she used.

Then, get her approved for the Amazon associate program. Once approved, just install the simple little code for the new Publisher Studio Amazon has. It's really nifty. All she would have to do it type her post, publish it, then on the actual published page, she can highlight product names and the Publisher Studio will show her a little list of products. She picks one and then the Publisher Studio program automatically makes that into an affiliate link.

If you're already an Amazon Associate, the info about this is here:

        https://affiliate-program.amazon.com...udio/main.html

If she enjoys doing that, then she'll naturally want to learn more.

  • It seems to me that you already have a blueprint for her to follow.
You can make her aware of the hours needed to test find the right
squeeze page to build your list with

You could perhaps also give your sister some credit
tell her to first what you have to do is this
after you get that done come talk to me about what is next

    online only,

She could chase shiny balls forever....

I would go right to product creation....

Sure, there are "tons of products" out there...

The thing is 90% of them are sub-par...

The only real "competition" is from the top 10%...

To put it together, I'd recommend Kevin Riley's Clockwork Recipe For Creating High Profit Video Courses.

Once she her product is assembled, she can then recruit affiliates.... They are always looking for "new" quality products to promote... and put $$$ in their pockets.

Of course, she doesn't have to focus on MMO/IM. There are lots of "desperate" niches out there to serve.

Self promotional? Are you kidding? YOU have those scammy/fishy signatures "make money fast", "make money filling surveys". Do I have sig link? No. Do I promote services/techniques? No.

However you are. if i were promoting some ebook on how to make money online, I would obviously make one or show it to my sister.

...but Im not a good teacher nor a mentor.

It's suprising that there is so much jealosy going on here. Anyhow, forget that I make ton of money. Thats completely irrelevant. All I'm saying is that I think investing in PPC, generating hundreds of hosting leads per month, implementing real SEO (no, no blog comments/profile links) and top notch content is a bit TOO MUCH for a complete rookie.

i don't want let her down. i dont want her to spend precious time on something that she is not capable. I'm born on internet, shes not. She doesn't know nothing about internet marketing let alone creating webpages with wordpress.

However, Ive gotten tons of really useful suggestions/replies.

Most affiliate programs have referrals too, so by getting her to use your ref code to signup you would be making money from helping her make money.

You say she's a internet novice, that might be so, but most people are fully capable of using internetbanks, e-mails, facebook etc. So to set her up with a wordpress and her blogging about something (like her baby as suggested earlier in this thread) and have targeted ads shouldn't be too hard for a wiz like you to setup and show her...

I would suggest that she start with tiny steps.

For example, reading a few things at Squidoo, Street Articles and Yahoo Answers -- and then opening an account at one or all three and simply doing tiny things. That way she will find her own way of using the Internet in baby steps that do not charge her any money and that let her know if she likes being online.

Here's a couple of things she can do on Fiverr:

    - Draw illustrations (if she can draw)
    - Write children's stories (300 words for $5)
    - Voice acting (30-60 seconds for $5)
    - Video testimonials (30-60 seconds for $5)
    - Send postcards (simple Gig with 0-15 words: $5, more words: $10)
    - Sell PLR eBooks (buy cheap ones or get free ebooks, sell them for $5)
    - Kindle reviews (free or $1 books: $5, more expensive books: $10-$15, more text: +$5)

    2 Gigs a day: 2 X 30 X $4 = $240 / month

And there are many other options to earn money on Fiverr...

You should begin by introducing her to what you do and also let her know making money online require learning curves.

Some of the sensitive things she should have at the back of her mind are:

Internet marketing which include list building, how the search engine works among others.

Traffic source from targeted terms via social media, ppc, SEO, blogging, forums and others.

    Some bit of web design.

She has to know that she needs money to make money and that's why you should consider article writing, freelancing sites like elance, fiverr e.t.c to help raise some funds for possible business expansion.

While it's not a good idea to bring her into the same niche as you, ofcourse not without telling her the reason.

I have been making a living off for a while and I want to help others make a few bucks as well. Our best site does $6k per day and most do about $10 per day all paid directly from Google. This will be limited I'm setting up for immediate family and friends but anyone willing to help make set up videos do graphics design, coding or have anything else valuable to offer to this project you can get in free.

I'm pretty sure she knows your story how you struggle to make it. Ask her if she's willing to go through the process and has the patience.
There are programs that can help her out without you intervention.
I know there is a pretty good program out there, but I can't remember right now. Let me go and look for it. and I'll post the link here. so check my posts later on.

Get her to write an ebook about something she is good at or may bring value. She may be good at writing and has the time now.

Then since you know how to build sites, and monetize via affiliate links promote her ebook that way you help her out and at the same time you make money too. If it does well, you make a bigger fortune and she will make a fortune. Win - Win for both of you.

    Good luck.

Looking at the site you are linking with I would say you know about marketing and business if this is what you do and its your annual gig?

With regards to your sister, the best play here would be to take her onboard as an assistant and teach here the jobs you do each day which are a time suck and can easily be outsourced. This will free your time to get above your business and see the bigger picture to making more money than you do now and it will allow your sister the opportunity to learn the business from the "inside".

Her path will then become clear as you and she proceed.

    Enjoy the party in August

My question is, why do you feel any of those things are too difficult for her? I mean everyone has to start from somewhere.

I bet you any money if she started off by using the right system and developing a small site in a low competition niche, she would end up hitting that target you mentioned of $200-$300.

Personally I believe that one of the easiest ways of making this happen is to target one specific product or offer and write content around the keywords related to the offer. In short a small niche, product review blog.

There are three benefits to starting small like this:

    1. The keywords normally have low competition on Google
    2. You don't need a lot of traffic to make money as people are entering from targeted keywords like "PRODUCT NAME review" or "buy PRODUCT NAME".
    3. You get to learn all the necessary skills to get you started working online - web development, content creation, keyword research, SEO, etc. etc.

If done correctly using the right model, your sis will hit that number relatively quickly.

Here are my tips that may help you and your sister.

    1. Find a niche which you have a solution to most people's problems or passion for something which others also have passion and most importantly are willing to spend $ on it.

Can be things like baking cakes, cooking, drawing, design, playing musical instruments, health and personal development besides just making $ online.

    2. Go to relevant forums and Facebook groups related to your niche. You can find them easily on Google and Facebook. For Facebook, you need to get an account and upload your photo.

    3. Introduce yourself, learnt to connect and see if you can help others like this forum. Another reason is to find out what they need, want or are having problems with.

    4. Once you get hold of those, write at least 4-5 articles providing helpful tips using Open Office or Microsoft Office. Then upload them as PDF.

    5. Sign up for Clickbank and relevant affiliate programs.

    6. Get a domain name at Namecheap, Hostgator web hosting and build a squeeze page addressing the main points of your report on what your prospects get before signing up as your subscribers to get your free report.

You can build a squeeze page at either Free Squeeze Page Generator you can find through Google search or paid Optimize Press by James Dyson for $97

    7. Sign up at Aweber for your autoresponder to connect with your subscribers through emails.

    8. Drive traffic to your squeeze page using forums, Facebook group and other methods like article marketing, blogging in sites like Blogger, Hubpages and Squidoo, classified advertising and Youtube video.

    9. At the same time, create a Wordpress blog sharing information on how you get started in your niche as well as helpful tips to your subscribers through emails.

You don't want to give your subscribers the impression of spamming them by constantly sending them affiliate links to offers.

With that said, this is the basic foundation of how you make $ online.

By helping people to get what they want, they will give you what they want.

Give your sister one of your sites that makes about $200/month and show her how to manage, execute and grow that site. Help her and guide her along the way when she has questions. Over time she'll learn how to grow the site and can pay you for it. She will have the knowledge and expertise in the future to continue running the site without your assistance and you will be paid for helping her when she eventually buys the site. If you're making a fortune you won't miss one small site.

I would suggest that, if she really want to start making money online, you will have to stop her from getting into the trap of online world. We have heard this many times, 97% of people fail online. This is mainly because of jumping from one thing to another & inconsistency.

And these days, every minute a new shiny product comes online, beginners will get into it and keep trying these new products and get nowhere.

So now what should she do?

Simple, stick on to one thing. And I think Social Media would definitely interest her along with making money online. Even if she don't have website etc. she could make something from it.

She could pick up affiliate product, promote them on Facebook, make money from it.
And to do this I would suggest to get a Facebook App which can spread her affiliate products on Facebook Easily.

For this you may check out this really amazing - Facebook App and suggest her you get on to this method.

    All the best.

If your sister wants to learn what you are doing, and you do not know how to teach her the step by step process, what you can do is to let her watch you. Show her how you do your tasks for the day. If she has questions, answer it. Let her take down notes. That way, she will have a reference to look at, which is going to be useful in the future.

Yes, you are absolutely correct. SEO is truly NOT the way to go about internet marketing because Google is a bit psychotic when it comes down to SEO. They like to de-rank websites that make it to the first page for no good reason and also it can take up to months and even years just to rank a darn website. In my opinion I think your sister should start out with the good ole list building technique. It is very effective and always will be.

You can do easy stuff like putting up Fiverr gigs or whatever but that is short term.

If she wants to get good at making money online I would share your "expertise" and tricks with her. Set her on the right track.

I'd also tell her to make a blog where she talks about her IM journey and shares any tips or ideas she encounters on the way. By doing this she'll learn how to build a community, she'll learn how to drive traffic, and etc.

When I first started out I made a blog and basically just Googled as much as I could. Over time I started to learn what I needed to do to get it more popular.

    Hope that helps

    Right ...

I'm no expert in this but it is kind of hard to keep your focus with a baby around.

    And this field requires focus.

If you want to help her, just help her.

Based on how much that "fortune" is you can simply give her the money. It is your sister, she's family, she would do the same thing.

Otherwise, freelancing may be the way to go for her ... but I know a lot of people who have a baby in the family and that is a full time job alone. It is harder than an exec type position.

Everybody is good at something. Just take a moment, slow down and focus on her strengths (even strengths that are not fully developed yet, but strong enough). Both you of can sit down and have a brainstorming session to expose these strengths if you need to. Then just keep things simple and start from that point. She will naturally add more skills as she becomes more experienced in the world of business and Internet marketing.

P.S. Even if she's not a computer person, maybe she can help with offline promotions. Who knows, she could be a great source for generating new traffic.

Again: Everybody is good at something.
