How to track leads?

Hello everyone,
first of all I want to say that english is not my primary language, so if I make some mistake, be friendly. :p

Anyway I have a big problem and I don't know how to solve it.

I met a big company and we decided to work together.

I will be their Web Marketing guy and I will manage their blog, their mailing list, their social page and every ads.

I asked them a high price ( 2500 € / month ) and they accepted, but they asked me if we can go for 1-2 months of " test driving".

I don't want to low the price and I can't achieve good results in only 1-2 months so I decided to offer them a new plan: 10% of commission on every single purchase brought by my work.

It's fine, and potentially I can also make more money than 2500 € / month if we consider that their product is sold for 2000 € / yr...

... but here comes the problem:

How can I track every single lead?

If I write articles for their blog and someone buy their product, if they go directly to the main site, I can't track it.

I tought to build my personal landing page, but I would lose leads anyway if the people go directly to their website.

Any idea on how to fix this problem?

  • you can't track your leads - if the company is really big . Or they can simply never show you all leads that you provide them .

    Just ask them how they can prove that the result they will show you at the end of your testdrive will be true. futher more you can kill them with the question : do you guys have any testimonials from your previous marketing guy?

    There is no normal answear for these questions
    after they can't find appropriative answear - try push them to your price per month .

      I knew it was nearly impossible and you confirmed that.

      It's impossible for me to track every single lead, so I will switch back to the montly plan.

  • You should be able to use tracking parameters in your links so you can track each lead. So if you wrote a blog post on cnn.com, then your link would be www.mysite.com/?utm_source=cnnblog and that will be tracked within Google Analytics... hopefully Google Analytics is set up to track sales/conversions/leads with Conversion Tracking. That should be what you need to get started.

    Ok, I copy the tracked link on blog and every time a visitor click on it, he is tracked so they know that traffic comes from me.

    But I earn on the purchase, so, how can I also track it?

    • I dont think you can know, but you can ask what the current sales figures are for the past year or two on a month by month basis (as it most likely varies during the year) and you agree with them to use an average sales volume figure as a baseline, and then you get credited with any sales in excess of this.

      Of course you should allow them 5% -10% increase in sales volume, for repeat sales to existing customers and their own local advertising, and growing popularity of their products etc. After that the remainder of sales could be yours, and your commission rate per sale could be higher on this basis.

      Or you could mix some options together to achieve a fixed monthly amount + smaller commissions.
  • For this you should ask company owners to give you a discount code, may be for 2-3% discount to customers if they use your code while purchasing the item? so you may get your remaining 8%, etc... Still only company owners will be tracking the information, go with this if you trust them.
  • So the coupon code is the only option.

    Do you know if I can ask to the webmasters of this company to add a " script " within the site that every time a visitor comes by my tracked link the coupon field is autofilled?

    This would be much better.

    Is it possible?
