Mainstream TV network commission, how much to charge?

Hi,

Looking for some advice. We've been approached by a mainstream TV media company, you would recognise them straight away, who want to commission us for a short animated video. It's a big break for us but we don't know what to charge them.

Essentially they're asking for a 3D CG animated video with music, based around a couple of very well known properties. They want us to make the whole thing including animation, music, story, everything so it's from the ground up. Video length will be in the region of 120-180 seconds.

We've done some research and have a vague idea of going rates but it's difficult to get an all-in quote such as what we're looking at, and also one that takes into account the kind of company we are dealing with.
Does anyone with experience in this area or otherwise have any advice on pricing?

Simply ask them what their budget is.

If they really are a mainstream TV media company
they will have budget and they will tell you.

If they do not tell you their budget they are not a mainstream TV media company.

    Welcome to the forum laserchicken.

I wish this wasn't your first post here. You need to sit down and settle in before asking a humdinger like that. It is just polite.

    But to answer your question.

    1. Work out your hourly rate for working
    2. Estimate how long that work will take you to produce the video.
    3. Add on all material costs you may incur.
    4. Work out the $ amount this comes to.
    5. Decide on your profit margin (Minimum is double it, I would treble it)
    6. Submit your price to the customer

You are getting some great advice here. One thing I would look into is to find out why the company approached you. Are you viewed as "cheap" by them, are you viewed as "really hot" by them, etc? This can help you put a spin on the numbers when you work them up, or even help you decide to walk away before you get too far into the project. OK, good luck, Edward Smith.
