Starting your (own name) blog or different niche blogs?

Hi,

What you recommend people to start with?

A blog talking about yourself and about money making programs, affiliate products etc.

Or

Starting different niche blogs to promote affiliate products.

I ask this cause i see many people here having their own blog with their own name, and I am wondering if they make money with this blog.

Take for example JohnChow.com or Shoemoney.com

I hope you can anser this.

Thanks in advance.

Richard

If you don't have a reputation and contacts in this market, stay away from it! Who would care to read joeblow.com's blog if nobody gives a damn about joe? (...and also joe hasn't made any money online yet, he just likes to talk about it!)

Start with something else, something you really know and care about, make money first, then you can talk about making money!

I agree... what you name your blog should be the keywords you're targeting

I personally found it more profitable to build a niche blog vs talking about my self and goals of my own instead. Really think about it hard. The people that use there name as there blog yes they do make money. However they are all geared to a niche in some way or another. Picking a name that suites your niche and something you have experiance in will help you greatly. You also need to figure out what your main source of income will be on that blog. If it is going to be an adsense blog mainly you will want to target high paying keywords. To do this simply go to keyword tool for google. Start out by trying a few keywords on something you like to do or have experiance in. See which ones pay better make notes then proceed to your next step by finding out how much competition you are going to have to fight for those front page ads. I have wrote a few things about this at my blog which you can find in my sig file. Good luck to you hope that helps and is what you where looking for pal.

I'd go for the niche blog any time. Chanes are, you won't become another Problogger or Shoemoney but your traffic will be more targeted with a niche blog. The market is so full of Make Money Online blogs that are general and all hoping to be another big gun.

If you register a blog with your own name it's really got to be about you.

This would be the classic blog which focuses on things that you observe and comments that you want to share with the world. If you're genuinelly interested in the niche you're marketing to then you'll get a following and people will listent to what you have to say.

Now if you're setting up a blog for the sole purpose of selling products then pick a name relavent to the site, and only put niche content on it - the niche probably won't want to know about your personal life, they just want relavent content from an expert.

The other benefit of a niche name is that should it become successfull you'll be able to sell it on, a blog named after you won't sell for much unless you happen to have the same name as someone who becomes famous!

For blogging tips I would recommend downloading content from Yaro Starak, all his blogging material is top notch.

I agree with going with the niche blog. It immediately tells the potential visitor what the blog is about. Otherwise they're left guessing and that just adds another complicated layer to conversion.

Richard, it depends on your overall plan or the niche you are targeting.

If you are targeting products in the weight loss niche for example, it makes sense to have a blog that focuses on that niche, with your keywords in your domain as well.

    Hope this helps.

Why don't you just practice with a throwaway blogspot blog?

If it was me in your shoes, I'd use a wordpress.com for your name blog (and begin to establish your self as an authority with that one)
and create several blogspot ones to test out your niche/ affiliate or what have you ideas

I've got 55 blogspots and a dozen wordpresses

remember this as well... the blogger profile and wordpress.com profile is also a free high PR inbound link to your main domain

Mostly they make life easier... I've heard one WF poster describe Offline Gold as "low hanging fruit". For example if I get a client who is a contractor working out of his basement, all he needs is a blogspot site, (a cleverly optimized one).

For larger local SEO clients if I see them slipping in the serps all I gotta do is post to one of it's blogspot (supporting blogs) and it shoots them up a listing or two.

I do make pocket change from the adsense... but to tell you the truth what those 55 blogs (mostly themed for Maryland or Frederick County Maryland) do for me is funnel Google Juice to all my Maryland SEO endevors

I don't worry about my competitors... look at the age of my blogger profile (hell, look at how long I've been a Warrior, the Warrior join date you see is when my Dad got cancer, I've actually been a Warrior since 2000, on the old unisol hosted forum)

my competitors couldn't catch me if they wanted to

Blogspot is HANDS DOWN the best free real estate available online, PERIOD. That's IF you know how to work with them. The most powerful feature they have in my opinion is being able to post via email. If you have a method of dripping out emails over time (like with an autoresponder service, for example) you can get a blog to autopost every day on autopilot.

Do that every day for a year, just grab a bunch of free articles, but make it post EVERY DAY. Ping it regularly, and submit the RSS feed around a few places.

If you only set it to post 2 or 3 times a week, you should be able to set up at least one of these every couple of days. More if you hustle.

Then, check back in a year.

See how much instant ranking power you control when you have 50 or 60 of these little Page Rank link monsters to juice up literally ANYTHING you want to have indexed and ranking.

Anyway, that's enough free ideas. Let me know PM if you ever want to exchange ideas - you're clearly mining the same territory I am. I just can't believ you have so many blogs on one single account! I've never had the guts to do that. I don't have a Google account with more than 10 blogs on it.

I used to spread them out over more than one google account but I wanted to concentrate the google juice.

Almost all of my blogspots are LOCAL, they are Frederick Maryland (or Maryland) small businesses... I don't flip them, they ALL LINK TO ME.

One is actually me competing with the local newspaper: Life in Frederick Maryland (which serves to ensure I AM the authority site for Frederick)

I'm up to 59 blogspots now.

If you want to see how much Google likes it... Google this:

        local Google Advertising

I teach or mentor any takers if you donate $50 to my favorite charity:
A Mission of Mercy Free Mobile Health Care Clinic
donations handled by Facebook Causes (so you don't have to wonder if I'll run off to the Bahamas with your $50)

If you don't want someone stealing your name in the future, go ahead and register your name anyway, because if you do get a high following, you can be certain someone will try and sell you your name.

  • How many people go online to find Make Money Online information compared to how many people go online to look for entertainment, or shop for products. MMO is a small niche and there is a ton of competition and a lot of savvy people who know how to get around paying through links that pay affiliate commissions.

But if you have what it takes then you know the cliche "There is always room for cream at the top".

I would definitely buy the domain for your name now. Not only will it keep someone else from getting it, but the domain age will start when it's registered.

I also don't think it would hurt to put up a blog with a wordpress theme and add some basic content once a week. You don't have to advertise the blog or link it to anything right away, but you will start building archives.

      Hi,

I second a lot of the advice here.

      I just made a similar point in post# 11 here -

      http://www.warriorforum.com/main-int...tml#post856144

You don't hear so much about niche bloggers because they're too busy making more niche blogs to do the 'social' thing and crow about their success. Don't let that put you off.

right now im doing both, except for the own name part. I have an informal blog on internet marketing I just started messing with and I also have some affiliate review sites I try to keep up to date. Just make sure you don't overload yourself.

Just subbed to your new blogspot... it seems you had your template custom designed, am hunting for the 'follow' widget and it's not there? I'm going to have to 'follow' you in blogger by hand, manually adding your blog to my blogger account.

      nice template btw
      I want one....

I just thought I'd give you a leg up by subbing...
