E-mail list swapping - is this still around?

Speaking to a pro marketer, he claimed if he had to start again tomorrow he would concentrate on list building.

Buy solo ad to drive traffic a squeeze page to build a email list

Starting small and constantly swapping ads and exchanging email lists with other people in the business to slowly build up his list.

Is this method still around? Do people still swap lists? i only ask becuase i read about it years ago.

  • Some methods are a revolving door and just never die ... As the internet cycles it's users the methods continue to work. New users sign in to the internet for the first time everyday.
  • Yes, I'm working with someone right now doing this exact thing. He makes a full time income JUST on list building and selling to those lists. He's been doing it for a few years though.
  • Not actually swapping lists (i.e. I'll give you my list of subscribers if you give me yours) - that's be slightly unethical (and worse).

    Though ad swapping (reciprocal mailings) works great. Not to over do it though and switch off your subscribers.

    The occasional relevant quality ad swap/reciprocal mailing is an excellent way to build your list, gain fresh subscribers and make new potential joint-venture contacts at the same time.

    • Exactly...I would not be a huge fan of an actual email list swap as these subscribers haven't actually opted in to your list, they opted in to the list of whoever you would be swapping with.

      I think that the swapping of lists has been replaced by the ad swap (eg, safe-swaps). This makes much more sense. That way, you are basically accomplishing the same thing but you are doing it in a way that your subscribers have the option of whether or not they wish to opt in to your ad swap partner's list.

      This is just a much better way to do it.
  • Yes, absolutely... and will be for a long time... although I wouldn't just focus on solo ads or JUST swaps...

    There's tons of other methods that you can incorporate to really blow up your results.
  • List swapping is unethical and leaves you wide open to problems. Better that you send a mailing for someone to your list and they send a mailing for you to their list.

    That way, both of you can be happy that the message being sent is approved by the sender not to upset his list.

    • I don't remember the last time i saw a squeeze page with this attached:
      "We reserve the right to share/sell/swap you personal information (eMail) with whomever we like, as long as it's for our benefit" ...

      Normally it's more like:
      "[Website] takes your privacy seriously and we will never share your personal information, bla ,bla ,bla"...

  • The only reason I can think of why anyone would be willing to sell / trade their subs is if they were low quality subs / junk and they couldn't make any money out of them any other way so instead they sell them to other marketers who don't know any better.
  • Yes, it will last for ever because it's proven to work for all professional email marketers. Must be done correctly to be effective.

  • All professional email marketers swap lists? Not true!

    People with high quality lists wouldn't dream of giving away their subs and taking random other subs from unknown sources that they have no connection with.

    Its selling list essentially , its very unethical btw.
  • It's still around, but necessarily the best method to use to get quality people on your list.... people that will actually buy something from you.

      When someone gives you their email address - whether they requested info online or handed it to you on a piece of paper - they are giving you permission to send them just the messages you've promised.

      If they gave you their email so they could receive your monthly e-newsletter but you're sending them an unrelated email once a week, they could begin to see you as a spammer.

      That said, list swapping happens all the time. But before you buy/swap a list, consider that the recipient will most likely see it as unwanted email. After all, they didn't sign up to your list, did they?

      That can breed negativity towards you/your business, and give you headaches if enough people report you as a spammer to their email service provider.
  • Again, think about why people would be willing to give away / swap / rent / trade their email subs - surely it can only be because those subs are inactive or don't take action (i.e. buy)....why would you want subs like that on your list?
  • If you're talking about "ad swapping" I'd highly recommend it as an effective form of list building that I still actively use to this day... If you're refereeing to swapping "lists" i,e trading leads, exchanging csv files, I'd strongly advise you not to do that.
  • Ad swaps are still alive and kicking hard. Another technique that has recently become very popular and is similar to ad swaps is called "click banking" (not to be confused with Clickbank).

    Click banking is different than an ad swap in that one partner delivers the agreed upon number of clicks to the other partner first, and then and only then the other partner reciprocates. Also, the clicks are usually delivered over a longer period of time, sometimes weeks or even months.

    I have used both to build my list and don't think it's unethical at all - as long as you don't overdo it. One swap a week is perfectly acceptable IMO.

    • Ad swaps are alive and well but physically giving the email to another marketer in exchange for their emails...not sure any legit marketers are actually doing this.

      I seriously wonder if the OP really meant more than adswaps though?
  • No ! List swapping is unethical. You better go for building your own list . Did you try facebook ads for building your own list ? try it . I am doing it and preety successful in building my own list of subscribers on different niches .
  • Sure but just know who your swapping with. Once you have somebody you like you two can even swap a message in your autoresponder sequence.
