10,000+ organic searches in the past 3 hours

Hey Warriors,

I have a really good problem, but it's so freakin' weird...

I'm getting thousands of visitors by the minute from yahoo search for one particular search phrase. I'm #1 for that phrase, but I'm also #1 in Google and am not getting any traffic for this keyword from there.

It's a long-tail and the phrase doesn't seem to typically have that much volume. Why in the world would I suddenly be getting thousands of visitors just from yahoo?

I also noticed that the people leaving comments have yahoo email addresses. Probably just because they are yahoo search users, but I wonder if it has something to do with that? I'm not running any paid advertising, so it's not PPC traffic.

I did make a change to my Robots.txt file this morning and wonder if that has anything to do with it. To be honest, I have no idea if I ranked in Yahoo before that for this keyword phrase.

Btw, these same exact thing happened to me about a year ago and the traffic came to a screeching halt the next day. I never figured it out but wonder if it is somehow media related. I really don't think so though b/c I would expect traffic from Google too.

Any thoughts?

I'm enjoying it now, but have a feeling this party's going to come to an end soon.

I can't say what the keyword is, but it's a long-tail that shouldn't be getting this much search volume.

I'm starting to think if it has to do with the auto-suggestions that come up when you start your search.

you sure its users? to me this sounds like yahoo slurp indexing your site. And it would go perfectly with your change of robots.txt

    Hey George,

I'm getting loads of AdSense clicks and affiliate clicks/sales that are spiking too, so some of the traffic might be from spiders, but there's definitely way more than normal real people visiting.

It might be, but at least they're opting in to my email list, lol.

But that got me thinking, so I looked at my stats... all different ips, locations, browsers, etc.

    Hey Ron,

I didn't think of that! Maybe I can sniff it out. I'll post back if I can figure it out. Traffic's slowed down, but it's still coming pretty strong - so might just be something like a mention in yahoo groups.

I know some of those groups can get huge or as jKiley mentioned, could be a BIG mailing list.

Hey, least your making off the deal. You'd think if it was an attack on adsense, you wouldn't be making the affiliate sales.

Enjoy it while you can right?

Oh yeah! I'd love to think this is sustainable, but I'm sure it's just a freak thing. Just so happens my most recent blog post this morning included an offer that made me a little coin. Can't complain

Btw, if it was a mailinglist, would the referrer be a yahoo email account? Analytics shows that it's an organic search term.

That's a really good question. I don't know that much about the groups, maybe some one else does. Though I "think" it would be web based links. They get notified of the new content, go to the group to check it out.

I really doubt that - Google tends to make decisions without asking questions. They just ban. And if they did it wouldn't be a big deal. For one, I have nothing to hide, but AdSense is a pretty insignificant compared to affiliate earnings.

Chances are it's a search term that was linked to on a popular story on yahoo news, I've had that happen. Enjoy the traffic while you can

Damn! You're right... I found it! There's a link in one of their articles to search for more information on the topic. I guess I should pack up my beach chair and get back to work.

If you aren't too concerned about getting a Google ban, then this is just good news for you (I mean the sudden spike in traffic).

I'm actually kind of shocked that there's even that much traffic potential on Yahoo. The link is pretty obscure, but maybe Yahoo users are used to that.

All in all, turned out to be a pretty good Sunday as a result.

This gives me an idea, how could you get your keywords on a major news site with another story? Ha ha, wouldn't that be great if you could somehow do that to get more results like this.

    there's only one way:

Install google analytics. I have some blogs which get "odd" spikes once in a while (i WISH it was 1000s - but analytics tells you exactly where it comes from.

Well... that was a good time. About 45k uniques later and the article finally fell off Yahoo's front page. I doubt there's a way to make that happen on purpose, but that would be one heck of a thing to learn how to game.

I can't help but think if this happened to be one of my other sites that generate around $1.50 a visitor, but all in all I got pretty lucky!
