What does it mean? Who can tell?

Since reading a number of threads I have become increasingly aware of the difficulty some might have in interpreting initials instead of the full terminology. It is so easy for old warriors to use them but even I am finding it difficult to keep up with the trend. It seems that most posters like to shorten their input in this way but many are probably not catching on to what is being discussed because of it.

Perhaps we need a list of initials and their meaning so that newbies especially can look them up. It is a fact that most of these shorthand initials have been around for donkeys years but it is also true that those coming to the forum or online for the first time can be completely lost by them. It is also a fact that many do not text and are, therefore, even more out in the cold.

You mean like when someone says they need some TLC in their BVDs PDQ?

Or just the 411 on IM...

Here's an IM marketing glossary if it helps: Internet Marketing Glossary (No, I don't own it.)

Of course there are others. Just look up "internet marketing glossary" in G

(...and G stands for Google. )

I signed up for a course just to find out what the initials meant. That's lol+very funny. I think those who offer courses might do well to explain what they are about before PSITD (people stumble in the dark) TTFO (trying to find out). Or should that be PSITDTTFO.

            Hi Art,

What is the point of using an acronym if the reader has to spend two or three minutes working out what it is
I get your point, but there is a side benefit. It teaches others to copy/paste anything they don't understand into google.

This has become one of the most valuable skills I have personally developed for online business, not just because of the benefits of understanding things, but also because of the understanding it has given me in terms of -

            a) filtering search results to find the right answer

            b) how search engines work

Obviously, these have knock on effects that are entirely different and help me to make money.

I've also expanded the habit and have a browser plugin that allows me to conduct a variety of 3-click searches (without any scrolling movement - eg a dictionary search) via my mouse. If I ever see an actual word I don't fully understand, I use this to develop my vocabulary.

I see many questions on here that I know from experience can be easily solved with a google search. Due to the nature of forums, I believe it's far better to learn in this manner than waiting for a bunch of replies that more often than not have promotional undertones. Of course, so do SERPs results but people are more aware of this in SERPs whereas they often fall for misinformation hand delivered by a human in a forum.

There are many other reasons why it's a good thing if online entrepreneurs learn to find their own answers to questions via search engines. I've found that if you hand answers to people on a plate without making them work/think for themselves, they invariably forget the advice - so perhaps abbreviations aren't such a bad thing.

Excellent Point. A post outlining the meanings of all of these abbreviations would be nice. I find my self scratching my head alot over them while surfing the WF (Warrior Forum).

Don't you mean SMHSWF. I mean get with it and speak the proper language in here please. Do you need a dictionary to understand?

I read the list referenced by John and did SMHSWF as I scrolled for half an hour to get to the bottom of it. The biggest learning curve on the web, surely.

and I thought my learning days were over.

Recently I bought a new VCR and can't get it to work because I can't understand what all the acronyms stand for. Its like reading Chinese. When I complained at a local shop about it the very informative assistant told me to get a 16-20 years old neighbor to do it for me as he will be sure to know.

There is nothing more pleasing and fun than to be addressed in your own language in such a way that you need to use a dictionary to understand what is being said.

What is the point of using an acronym if the reader has to spend two or three minutes working out what it is, what it means and if it is actually constructed correctly - and many aren't! SMS? Well, short in content, long in translation.

So, we make a nice long post with all the acronyms we use. IT can be tough to learn them all (I still don't know some of them). That's why this is a good idea, seriously.

Unfortuantely, it will quickly become useless.

Not because the information will be useless, but because nobody will reference it when they don't know what something stands for. Creating a list is the easy part - getting people to use it is another matter completely.

Good point Norma. Great links that others have shared. I actually am a texter & I use all those shortcuts but only on text, facebook & Myspace. I don't think it looks nice in a forum.

    Just my opinion.

Why does every discussion have to be at a noob level?

I understand if someone is writing a beginner's guide to something...But I don't understand why people who are knowledgeable and want to have an advanced conversation have to take more time to spell everything out for those that aren't experienced enough to understand and too lazy to look it up.

This is a big peeve of mine with forums, that all conversations have to be to the lowest common denominator, which makes it very hard to progress to another level.

This is nothing against noobs at all, and when writing to a noob, I try to use language they will understand. However, not every conversation should be at a noob level and beginners need to realize that not all conversations are intended to include them.
