Do you think Bing has the mettle to overthrow Google in the long run?

No. But they may over-take Yahoo, or at least some of Yahoo's market share.

I cannot see anyone overthrowing google in the foreseeable future, Google is one the largest corps in the world and such a large brand it will be hard for anyone to overthrow them, even in the long run.

I doubt it too. However, Bing has made some huge leaps forward in terms of it's capabilities as a search engine. In many way's it surpasses Google in terms of accuracy of results and even speed.

The problem for Bing and Microsoft is the length of time Google has been the king of search and their ever changing acquisitions of new companies to bolster their offerings to the public.

The one thing extra in Bings favor is the marketing campaign that they are putting out there to let people know about it. I think they certainly have the opportunity to take over Yahoo (and eventually buy them out) which Google should have done in the first place.

    All the best

I wasn't too impressed with Bing. Probably because some sites I have ranking well in Google didn't show up in Bing, so I might be biased

Microsoft will never defeat google with a search engine alone. They are badly in need of a new idea. I think Facebook and related technologies would be their best bet if google doesn't beat them to it with Google Wave.

I just read a blog post (don't remember where, so no link unfortunately), in which it was stated that bing does not aspire to beat google off the place the SE occupies at the moment (wouldn't be that sensible, huh), rather going for a narrower thing - becoming "a decision search engine" helping people resolve everyday issues.

Anything's possible. Probable? No. At least not in the near future.

I've tried Bing a couple times and I'm not that thrilled with it. Its results are hit and miss, but for the most part, accurate.

The design? Makes me wonder if they've learned nothing from Google's simplicity mantra. And their distinction between their sponsored links and regular links is no distinction at all...could be annoying to the average surfer and the person paying for the clicks that lead nowhere.

There was supposed to be a bing-o-thon on hulu, I think today, but am not sure. Maybe I should tune in and see what the fuss is all about.

For as much as a humans have progressed, they hate change.

While we can debate about Google's incredible might as a company, and I did it all the time while working at the Intel Corp., the fact is that people are comfortable with the simplicity Google has kept with.

People hate change and I don't see people jumping on the Bing bandwagon with an advertising that is as confusing as it is just plain weird.

Consider though that since regular folks outside the techie niches don't like change they don't like changing the default web browser (IE) and search engine (Yahoo or MSN now Bing) when they buy a new PC. Put a bit of cool marketing sizzle into the mix and Google starts looking like PC in the PC vs. Mac commercials.

To me there is little corelation of PC vs. Mac since apple is hitting the chords of people that have viruses, blue screen of death and other problems that plague PC's and yes I am a PC unfortunately.

Google has little to no flaws and offers the most extensive network of free tools of any search engine. They are the authority and have little failures.

Ordinary people are actually complaining about the quality of Google search results due getting malware or thin affiliate sites in their results so don't be too quick to discount that angle. While I don't think this will make a huge dent in Google's dominance just like PC vs. Mac campaign didn't make much of a dent in Microsoft's OS dominance, there may well be some impact, such as Microsoft moving from 5% to 10%, perhaps a little higher.

Anything is possible, but I personally like Google better. Went to Bings home page. Made me feel closteraphobic. I like the simple layout of google. Lots of white space... there's something be said for the way something makes you "feel". That's the bottom line; How does it "feel" when a person lands on your homepage? I can "breath" on Googles.

You can market like crazy and generate alot of public awareness (as we see on this forum everyday by people with lots of traffic and few sales...), but if a person gets to your site and it doesn't "feel" good, they wont return.

You know what it is with big companies and shareholders, they are not so flexible anymore like they use to be, and always being the biggest can make you lazy and overlook thinks, 5 years everybody thought that FireFox would never beat IE and look at FF now that have a huge share of the browser market.

Unlikely. Google is "not" just a search engine. They have their hands in many pots (i.e., 100+ *different* industries) so while search engines may be what they are best known for -- if their position was ever 'ursurped' (difficult, but could happen) -- they would still have a very successful business model that would continue to flourish.

Bing is already the 4th biggest traffic source for a few of my sites. I read somewhere that it's already more popular than yahoo search (though I don't know how accurate that is).

Wow, I'm glad you cleared up the proper way to value a company Nathan. Just comparing stock prices between two companies really tells you NOTHING about which company is bigger or better. Hopefully not too many people use rationale like that when making more important decisions in their lives. Obviously if Microsoft has 1 million shares outstanding at $1 a share they would have a market cap (value) of roughly $1,000,000. If Google has 1 share outstanding at $400 then their market cap is $400. So, you have to take into account the number of shares outstanding as well as price per share.

There are a few things that bother me about Google. First, that Google is "cool". Coolness is usually not where the "herd" is. So, to feel cool using something you have to feel that you are rebellious or one of a few that are using it (probably because you feel you're smarter than everyone else). Unfortunately there is now a massive herd all milling around Google so how much longer can it be considered "cool". Remember back in the Dot Com era just before the big Dot Bomb when everyone measured coolness by how many hits you got on your site or how many "eyes" it had regardless of whether it made any money? Of course, hit counts included image files and other objects on your page so you could stuff pages with objects to jack up your "hits" and allegedly the value of your website. All the cool people were talking about the new economic model that was not based upon old concepts like profit but rather focused on future potential and market share. After the Dot Bomb "hits" became very uncool as did quite a few of the sites with very high market value derived from the "new" economic model. In fact, most are now gone. The Pets.com puppet was soooo cool.

Second, Google has a knack for developing "products" that don't really make any money. Despite all of their products they really only make money with their contextual ads. Google is not really where they are now because of their fantastic search results but more because they effectively implemented contextual ads in their search results before anyone else.

Third, Google's results usually suck. All who visit this forum know that if you know what you're doing you can throw up a blog or site, write some articles, spin them through some spinning software, use a bot to post them, pay someone $10 to create 10,000 links and viola you're at the top of the serps. Why? Because Google's algorithm can't read. You could practically post random words and as long as your keyword density and links are all good Google puts you near the top. As a marketer it's great. As a Google user it sucks. I see it on a daily basis. I search for a term and I see a bunch of sites that are obviously MFA sites at the top of the listings. That wouldn't be so bad except that the content is usually grammatically horrible and the information useless. Usually just a bunch of the same statements made over and over.

"If you are looking for XX widgets then you should check out XX widgets. XX widgets are great. XX widget are very useful if you need a widgets. There are other widgets but XX widget are best. You can find more about XX widgets in this site. We will give you all the best advices about XXwidgets."

And that ranks high in the Google results. Come on. If they can't solve that problem somewhere down the line, and, they lose their coolness factor then I think someone could definitely take them down. Probably won't be Microsoft since they have their own problems but more likely somebody we haven't heard of yet.

Well, enough typing, I have to get back to optimizing my MFA sites for Google's Serps. : )

  • Currently Bing favors Onpage factors heavily (Meta data) such as Title/descrip/tags. This may seem good but the mass people linking on the internet have little influence on the results of Bing (which isn't good if it's a scalable SE) so it's really more of directory with amorphous categories predetermined by ones onpage factors, and not necessarily it's offpage popularity....will non webmasters care? Probably not, so it always "could". It's still early and could progress into a great SE but needs more time to get a more efficient algorithm imo.

I think it's much harder to wipe out a single very powerful and monopolistic powerhouse than it is to sweep through a bunch of smaller fledgeling companies that were more or less floundering around and testing the waters. Hotbot was only one of several--Altavista was another one that was very successful before google. none of the SE's back then held nearly as large a share as Google does. It's much like the real world history, with how a few larger kingdoms took over many more smaller feudal factions. Every time this happens, it gets harder and harder to topple. Of course, they also say you're only king for a day...

google however has been king for over a decade...

Well I have an advertising account at both,

I get more buyers at google

If bing or microsoft or what ever they want to call themselves today or in the morning, if they start converting, fine but so far their traffic is not converting and google does convert, that is the bottom line, I dont care what they call it as long as I get sales then can call it anything they like.

Today I logged into both of my advertising control panels and I did two advertising campaigns at google,

Bing, nothing, mostly because they had technical problems today.

But then again should that be a surprise?

Right now, I'd say it's not highly likely. I would imagine it's EXTREMELY difficult to capture a market share of the search engine industry.

However, the cell phone industry is another industry that would be immensely difficult to capture a reasonable market share in, and Apple managed to capture about 20% of it with the iPhone, which is VERY significant.

So I guess anything's possible. We'll have to wait and see.

lol my site ranks higher on Bing than google XD I am seeing more and more Bing on my stats too, but still nowhere near Google, I would say maybe 1 in 10 or 20 is bing, vs google. Microsoft's success with Bing, I would think would be similar to its success with X-box, up there and popular enough to be profitable for them but not really what you'd call a juggernaut.

Myspace failed because they rested on their laurels and didn't think their problems needed addressing and never saw the need to keep on soldiiering forward with new innovations...So, someone else did.

Facebook and social networking like twitter is scaring the G a little these days. Big G is thinning out too much I think like what happened to Microsoft. Like Vista turned out to be lousy, but when they focused on the OS and Win 7 came out, it turned out to be the best OS now. As Google is thinning out in other words expanding to other fields, the quality of the search engine is lowering, plus they are the biggest spammers of all. lol. They all started from a garage, so why not ? Anything is possible. So if Google wants to stay on top it better keep its focus there. These days I get such crappy results from Google sometimes. Chrome is still beta and its totally useless except for it being a little faster. Google and privacy? Must be a joke. Spying and selling ADs on a cloud system. Copyrights? My butt! Google? Just too big of a company, bullying and saying don't be evil. lol . Maybe the Europeans gonna give Google a kick in the butt just like what they did to Microsoft. Bing could beat Google if Microsoft put all their focus on the search engine, which they won't anyway because they got their WIN 7 cruising now. Then maybe something new and trendy pops out from a garage and ..... actually people are starting to get sick of Google ..... BUT right now, here, Google is the best for the time BEING.
    Peace.

Nintendo was just about sunk till it decided to actually innovate like it once did, and reinvent itself in the video game industry with the Wii.

The biggest risk you can take is none at all, they say.

I think some of the larger corporations like Microsoft and now Google start to lose that innovative edge and forget the need to constantly reinvent yourself to stand out. Huge success seems to do that sometimes, I have observed. Certainly it can in the music industry. The companies that succeed long term know how to step outside the box and continually change up the game, while continuing to give people what they want most from them. Not wait till somebody else does it...

No one has remained king of the internet forever...Google will probably topple eventually, unless it can maintain the creative spark that got it there in the first place. It's hard because nothing stays new for very long.

In many way's it surpasses Google in terms of accuracy of results and even speed.
    I doubt that sean.
Many keywords from programming and similar technology niche gives better results on google than from bing. Many high paying keywords have better results on google. let's put ourselves into shoes of search user instead of IM person. I find google results better and accurate for my queries. Bing can't even dig more relevant pages like google.

Google's been the search engine goliath for over 10 years... Bing popped up only last year or so.

Sure, Bing's part of Microsoft, but it's much less developed than Google, which most people are already cozy with. If it ain't broke...

Anything is possible it just takes something new and innovative. I never thought Nintendo would be 1st place once again and Playstation last place..but its happened!

However unlike Playstations that always have sucked...atleast Google is a great company/service.

I LOVE Bing but it will not outrun Google in traffic etc. I love bing because I think it is much easier to "work with." No slaps. No silly dances. If you know what to do to get a top spot you can usually get it and stay there. Bing is cooooool

I think ANY large company can fail as markets shift.

Google has the program covered for the next 2-3 major technology shifts in internet connectivity and content. Their foray into mobile shows they understand the game.

Microsoft carved out a gigantic marketshare of early desktop computing by capturing 95% of the desktops worldwide. They're still riding on that wave, but they have never been able to recapture their former heyday glory of rocketship market growth. Their enterprise server market was always more competitive with the xNIX and IBM world, and then Linux/Apache in the web world.

They do have other internal enterprise businesses that will ensure they aren't going anywhere in the near future... for example, SQL Server has a huge marketshare of SMB enterprise for business applications. Because of that, MS bought Great Plains Accounting, which is a 400 pound gorilla in the enterprise accounting world... because it was built on top of SQL Server and MS needed to compete with Oracle Financials.

There are stratosphere markets that MS still dominates, and major enterprise isn't rushing to the "cloud" over rightful concerns of security, longevity/viability of the services, etc... SaaS is a great idea, but companies aren't willing to bet the farm on some 3rd party that might be gone. So enterprise is still going to be around for a very long time to come.

Bing is being smart by not trying to beat Google by doing what Google does, but yet trying to focus on offering a service in search results which Google doesn't exactly offer. This is generally a great way to compete with any company... unfortunately Google isn't just "any company."
