$500 turns into $50,000 in one weekend... do you believe in magic...

This weekend we placed 100 business owners in a conference room. Showed them step by step how an Internet Marketing system will boost their profits, business, and reputation amongst the Internet... Upsold a $2,500 package... and grabbed 20 new clients

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

My team and I decided we wanted to try to sell packages offline in which we would create a perfected IM system for someone's business, this included:

- A Website
- Three Landing Pages
- AutoResponder
- Digital Product
- E-Commerce System
- Help Desk

We were already doing this, however, quote by quote instead of all inclusive packaging.

We are all really good salesmen, and so we decided it would be more beneficial if we spoke face to face, shook hands, and talked to our prospective customers instead of sending out catalogs and emails.

Here is how we marketed and implemented the above concepts.

First, we contacted a local Hilton (a hotel with business conference rooms) and receive quotes on their rooms, surprisingly, they were very reasonable and would give us the whole room with No Catering, just space, for $400.... of course we had a 100 person limit with this room, but to a run a test on this system that is all we wanted to do.

We Xeroxed 500 postcards, and 1000 flyers with our information about our FREE seminar coming up in a month time. That's right, completely and utterly free information.

We did some soliciting at Staples, Office Max, Borders, and eventually handed out all the flyers and postcards within a week.

Out of the 1,500 pieces of advertisment handed out, in three days we had confirmation by phone ( which converts better then website in postcard and flyer marketing) for our 100 spots...

---------------------------------------------------------------
SEMINAR MATERIAL
--------------------------------------------------------------

- We purchased $100 worth of bagels and orange juice
- Powerpoint Screen (included in our Hilton Business Package)
- Myself and an old client (partner)

Luckily, we had an old client who we Joint Ventured on this business deal with who did not mind coming on stage and speaking about the success he has had, which includes a mailing list size of 800 people, and $40,000 worth of revenue from the system we setup for him alone, all within 6 months.

---------------------------------------------------------------
The Actual Seminar
---------------------------------------------------------------

First I introduced myself and thanked everyone for coming out to our seminar, on the screen I showed the analytics chart from our client that we will be discussing on.

We started with the concept of the Internet, explained that the business practice is some what different from the normal and that, you need to build trust because their is no tangiable handshake like their use to.

I create interactivity amongst my listeners by asking what ways they think could be implemented to create buyer trust with a prospective customer through their website.

No one really had any good answers... one person said email them, which brought us into the conversation of a mailing list and autoresponder series.

We sat on autoresponders for about 45 minutes, discussing effective ways of setting up their autoresponder, never touching it, but consistently producing an income off of it.

Next we moved into search engine optimization tactics, and landing pages to convert people to your mailing lists...

Finally we moved into digital product development and expansion out of their local community to the world wide web.

The whole seminar took about 2 hours, and 45 mintues of Q&A

----------------------------------------------------------------
The Sell
----------------------------------------------------------------

Selling was super easy because throughout the whole seminar we used a real live client as the basis behind our content.

At the end of the seminar, we presented the opportunity with 6 visuals, assuming most of these business people are just getting use to the idea of digital design and product, we put 6 posters on the stage that said in big words.

- A Website
- Three Landing Pages
- AutoResponder
- Digital Product
- E-Commerce System
- Help Desk

We explained that we are opening limit positions up and that it is first come first serve, but they can be on a waiting list afterwards...

We sold out our twenty spots in 15 minutes...

$50,000, one weekend, simple seminar, simple system....

Make some moves.

As a longtime established expert and author on the topic of speaking and seminars, I can vouch for the fact that seminars are the fastest, easiest, most effective, and most fun way to do lead generation and lead conversion - and here's a few tips for the warriors - you've all helped me (including the thread starter who is a really nice guy, by the way...) so it's time to give back.

Many of my students are doing a 2 seminars per month model: you do one in your office on a Wednesday evening, and one on a Saturday morning in a rented hotel room - to get the cheapest price, look for "business / courtyard" type hotels - Summerfield Suites type of hotels - I (and my students) get very, very nice rooms for $100-$300 which is nothing compared to your sales, huge ROI.

To get the best rate for your room, get their quote, then look them in the eye and without flinching, say these words: "great, now what's your corporate rate?" - don't worry if you're not a corporation, they won't ask for your corporate paperwork :-) that's just code for "I want a discount". Then you negotiate from there, or just take whatever discount they offer you.

Of course, the biggest barrier to doing speaking & seminars is not butts in seats or venue, it's stage fright and fear of public speaking; but the truth is that once you discover there's no "monster under your bed" you'll truly become addicted to speaking/seminars. It's actually much easier to conquer fear of public speaking than most people realize.

I've got tons of free articles and a free seminar training on my site at Public Speaking Training if you want more info.

      Best,
      David

    Sweet!

    And extremely doable.

Real estate gurus have done this forever and made a fortune on thier backends.

There are several that offer rolling seminars at several locations regularly, one different location each weekend. They do them in blocks, then nothing for a few months. At the back of the room they upsell home study courses, books, etc and "limited seats to a more advanced seminar".

I know someone personally who has done these for at least 10 years and it's unbelievably profitable for very little initial cash outlay. Just look professional and have a plan of attack.

    Steven,

We didn't look into radio or print media, we figured the free seminar will pull on it's own with the flyers and postcards, however, that is interesting? Have you been on the radio before?

      Many times.

If you have a local "community-minded" radio station, they often have short 30-second segments throughout the day during which they announce upcoming local events. For instance, you may hear them say: "On Saturday the Chamber of Commerce will be hosting a FREE..." Usually you can submit your event to the station to be included in their community listings.

PR's do well locally, too. Fax them directly to all the local the stations. I can usually line up a radio interview in advance of a live seminar. They convert pretty well into registrations, especially for free events.

    Nope. No. Uh-uh.

I call this "the path of the great speaker" and it's the mindset that the speaking clubs and associations would have you believe too...

...but I can tell you from YEARS of experience that being an entertaining, funny, great speaker has NOTHING to do with getting sales.

I've gotten tons of standing ovations and walked away with no sales and been left scratching my head wondering why...

The answer is more than I can post here, I put up another longer post today you can read, but suffice it to say that it's about creating intense curiosity, desire (a sprinkling of fear) and a very strong call to action that gets sales.

Providing irrefutable proof as LMC pointed out (having a real live client on hand as a case study, in his example...) is also necessary.

Great story - ive done something similar but only with 15 bums on seats. I also made sure to get a refundable deposit of £50 to ensure attendance.

Getting 100 seats filled is quite a task so congrats - and that from only 1500 postcards and flyers.

Did you take deposits? If not, did all 100 turn up?

That's if YOU feel the need to "prove" that. Seminar attendees are being sold services provided by a company. They're not there based on the sales team's personal income.

When you go to buy a car do you ask the salesman how much he earns? It has no bearing on your enjoyment in driving the car you're buying. It would simply be an exercize in nosiness and not a question the salesman should fel obligated to answer.

It's really amazing how many different business models there are for working with the offline world!

Seminars and public speaking certainly appeals to me (especially as "wall flower" doesn't apply to me LOL), and one method I have thought about is using post cards.

Certainly running seminars is something I will be doing in the near future.

    Great job.

Welcome back to 1980. The FREE semiar worked then and I'm glad to see it working today.

There isn't any reason a Warrior can't take this concept out into his/her own community, and shoot for the 25 to 50 participants.

See, the secret is to sell MANY all at once. So instead of trying to sell onesy twosy to mom and pop stores, this FREE seminar will give you the chance to sell to many.

ONE old world secret, get a sponsor, local chamber or a business (offer a FREE deal to them in exchange for the sponsoring, which allows you to contact their customers)...an endorsed seminar will pull more seats in.

Thanks for the great post and glad to see the old methods, the ones that have withstood the test of time, are still doing great in this "modern" age.

Seriously though - I used to do this for a real estate investor who was my original mentor in the house flipping business. I filled hotel conference rooms for him and managed the RSVPs. He paid me a commission on every course and mentoring package he sold. I even sprang for the coffee and bagels.

You could take this thing nationwide and bring in that same 50k every weekend.

      Dream big
      Congrats on your success!

Great success story... Has anyone had any luck charging for seminar seats? I noticed a firm in my locale is charging about $500 for an online marketing seminar... Seems interesting as I would be more inclined to go to a paid seminar as opposed to a free one (free seminar = pre paid legal in my mind)... I have an insurance background, and I get invited to multiple "free seminars" weekly...

We did this for our golf company for a couple of years too. During that stretch we had almost 200K people show and converted over 30% of them into students/customers.

Seminars are extremely effective IF done right! We tested everything for a year prior to launching ours. Ad design, room set up, scripting, lighting, temperature of the room, what times to have the seminar, pricing, giveaways, back table set up, sales & back end follow up, product pricing, you name it!

Great story and congrats on your success!

Question is still out there... anyone have success with paid seminars? I have been thinking about doing one, but would be interested in some viewpoints. Free seminars just seem cheap to me...

I would suspect someone willing to plop down $300 for a half-day seminar would be a better prospect. Fill the room with 40 people to give it an exclusive feel, and you gross $12k even if nothing converts...

I tried the paid seminar route and it didn't go to well. Here is what I did and how I ended up where I am at.

I tried to fill a seminar for $197 for a 5-6 hour seminar on a Saturday. I even hired a outside B2B sales rep to try to fill it. I had several different type of flyers as well as some PLR offline material (8 pages each with the last one being a sales page for the seminar). I figured it had a higher chance of making it to the business owner than a 1 page sales flyer.

No response at all. It wasn't the best experience in the world. I did use it to meet several business owners in the process. I took the time to talk to them about what I was doing and I asked them what they thought the best way to fill it was.

They all suggested giving it away for free. I explained to them that I didn't want to do that because I don't want it to look cheap and I don't want a lot of people signing up and taking up seats and then not showing up.

They all informed me that if they took the time to go to the site and sign up then they would take the time to show up. 2 of them were actually looking for exactly what I was holding my seminar on. They told me they had no clue where to go to look for my services.

I now have 20 people signed up for my free seminar on July 11th. I am speaking at the Chamber of Commerce After Hours meeting on Thursday.

The director of the Chamber is going to do 2 email blasts out to their members for me for the seminar. I am also going to do another 5 minute presentation 2 weeks from Thursday at their next Business After Hours. THat will be 2 days before the workshop/seminar. That should be an easy way to fill up whatever seats I have left to fill up.

To get the ball rolling I suggest giving the seminar/workshop away for free. It costs me about $300 to put on the whole workshop.

Just give it away and rake it in on the backend.

Good feedback... I figured it could go either way with a paid seminar... I guess my insurance background just makes me skeptical of free seminars. Seriously, I could spend 40 hours a week attending the "pitch fests" I get invited to...

Quick question, @stayfocused... How large is your community? How many seats were you attempting to fill? How many seats are you filling for your free seminar?

The town I live in has about 18,000 people. There are several cities around that will feed into the seminar.

I have booked a conference room that seats 60 ( for only $150 for the whole day ) So I was limiting the seating to 50 business owners.

That is how many I was planning on selling but I am sticking with the same number of seats for the free seminar.

I will check this weekend after I talk at the Chamber of Commerce After hours to see how many seats I have left.

I have a strategy I plan on using to get the seats fill if for some reason they don't go over that good.

Basically what I plan on doing is using those business owners who do sign up to fill up the rest of the seats. Here is how I plan on doing it. I will be calling up those who sign up first to introduce myself.

Then I will explain to them that I am looking for some businesses to be put on the "Hot Seat" during the workshop. To qualify for those hot seats they must get 3-5 other business owners to attend the workshop. Shouldn't be to hard for them to pick up the phone and get other people to sign up for a free workshop.

I will report back and let you know how this goes and when I get the 50-60 business owners signed up for the seminar.

A good way to fill a paid seminar is to JV with a business owner who has a large list of Business Owners, ie: Lawyers, Accountants, Offlice Cleaning Company, Ink Refill Stores etc.

My question to you is how did you manage the 20 clients as there is a fair bit of work there and all at once.

I personally would prefer that over a period rather than one hit but I don't want a job.

    Hey,

Sorry I haven't had time to come back to this thread an answers questions...

In regards to the soliciting, this wasn't our only marketing that took place... however, no we didn't ask for permission or ask managers to hand them out, we placed flyers on cars, and yes, we did receive a letter from Staples Manager asking us NOT to do that again.

In regards to fulfilling orders, each order is in a month's contract. This is surely enough time for my designers and myself to put their projects together given that they provide us with all the content that we need.

We DON"T start the project until we receive all content that we need, for this is the number one delay in more website service oriented projects.
