Elance getting DoS attack now.

Just got an email that elance is getting hit by a denial-of-service attack whats going on lately!?

    It's just getting started, Burt. This is going to continue, and it will only get more common and more extreme. The tools for it are easy to get and the damage they can do is increasing on a nearly daily basis.

    The reports I've gotten describe bitflow rates (bandwidth saturation) of 30 to 100 Gbps. And that's with a bunch of targets. If they focused this all on one target, it would take down almost any system.

    The bad thing is it is usually some young teen who thinks it is funny to make someones life miserable. I'm asked all the time aren't you worried about using your private information on the net. Sure but what can you do but what you can do.

    If someone out there wants something on the net they will find a way to get it, all we can do is make it harder for them. I would rather use a credit card here than hand it to someone where ten other people will see the number.

      I've seen this sort of pointless and maliciously destructive crap pulled by guys in their 50s. It ain't just teenagers.

      Seriously. The older bastiches have longer attention spans and a greater tendency toward obsession. Once they get their egos involved, it gets stoopid.

      I have a "bait blog" that I use to attract the bots. Tonight's crop was 17 blocked IPs in 46 minutes. When I figured I had enough data, I just renamed wp-admin to something they are unlikely to ever guess, and they can't get in to even try. But you could still read it if I had any posts there worth the effort.

      The 404s are a minor issue for that server, and they have a good chance of chasing off the scumbags' bots soon enough.

      Pretty good security on that one, but anything can be beaten. And this kind of attack doesn't depend for "success" on getting through to any of the data. It's all about making a site inaccessible so they can demand their pound of flesh, or claim their spot as "powerful," because they destroyed something.

      Hell, a 7 year old kid with a book of matches and an IQ of 65 can be more destructive than that. But these l33t h@x0rz (read: script kiddies) think it's something to brag about...
