Crushing It on Craigslist, No Kidding

Hey Guys Thought I would chime in about craigslist as an effective marketing source...

I can attest to this personally across multiple niches.

True story I made my first $100 online because of craigslist and proceeded to CRUSH IT from there on after.
Craigslist as with all marketing is about creatively solving problems if you can do this better then the competition you stand a chance to make a lot of cash.

So I created this thread to see if I was the only one. You see your competition on craigslist doesn't many times do what it takes.,. eg ads that: have NO image,Not written html , or geared for click through, and are not properly listed are easy to beat.

QUESTION:
Tell me what you guys think, in what way have you made a profit on craigslist and how has that site effected your life?

Here's my list of uses:
* Sourcing Tenants
* Selling Odds and ends around the house
* Selling through arbitrage
*offering services
*promoting sites
*Buying retail items almost new for 30% of the cost
*real estate leads (still testing but getting tons of leads)
*bartering for service
*selling things in multiple countries (fun)
*finding real estate deals
and much more

This has changed my life by allowing me to not have to work at a job while steadily growing a recurring revenue... I am not rich however, I am well on my way and my first ever marketing campaign was on craigslist... What about you?

Sir, it seems as though that lately Craigslist
is no longer allowing the ability to hyperlink
out to a website. You can still use HTML
to bold, enlarge, or italicise text, but
as for leaving anchor text - no.

Please correct me if I'm wrong as this
discovery put a slight damper on my CL
    marketing strategies.

As far as you making a killing...congrats!

This isn't an easy task, so I appreciate you
starting this thread. I don't use Craigslist
to sell products or services directly, but I
use it as a medium to generate leads.

At times I'll even direct traffic to my eBay
store from Craigslist...but not sell my items
    directly.

There are a number of ways to make money on craigslist. You could even try something like this guy One red paperclip - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia and trade something up to something much more valuable. Even if they turn off hyperlinks it is still a good source of leads and contacts.

I have the same issue and you are correct it is CL auto flagging your ad. The only way I have found around it is to spin the ads and titles, also use a VPN or proxy to get a geo targeted IP. It is much easier to spin when you have a very small ad perhaps for sending someone to a squeeze page however I sell physical products with much longer ads.

Craigslist is not a level playing field, that's for sure. The number of 'tricks' and strategies that can be learned to gain selling advantage is quite surprising really.

I'd like to see a globally popular advertising platform that employs a standardised model of ad display. Even if only for the sake of presentation and visual uniformity.

Congratulations. You've probably run into this in your travels but there's a fortune to be made out there scrapping. People will literally give you their old appliances. I found this out last summer at a yard sale. A guy was selling a working refrigerator for $5. He said he was surprised no one had scooped it because it was worth $40 in scrap metal.

I don't have a truck but got to thinking that some enterprising guys with a decent truck could place ads offering to pick up old appliances. If you hustle you might be able to pull in $300+ per day in the right location. There are plenty of people doing it but I still see lot of ads where people are giving heaps of scrap away. Of course, you show up at the house and they often have other free stuff they want you to cart off.

Nice going, man. I'm happy for you.

It's not uncommon to find people living in the "country" who will give you the old car sitting in their yard for anywhere from free to a few hundred dollars just to have someone haul it off. You can usually get $500+ depending on the size and the material it's made of. Not a bad potential profit for loading something on a trailer and driving it down the road.

Craigslist was where I started making money online back in 2005... simply placing little ads, to a squeeze page, building the list, and selling products through email...

I was at the point where I was placing 50 ads all by myself which got me probably between 10 to 50 subscribers a day... I remember it taking me about 2 hours to post all those ads, but it was well worth it. I now have a team that posts over 200 ads for me on cl daily.

It takes a strategy and being able to zig and zag when needed.

If you can master placing ads on craigslist, then you can make a good, full time income with the right monetization strategies.

If they are being flagged that quickly I have bad news for you, it's probably CL auto flagging your ads for duplicate/similar content. Me personally I revolve between 3 accounts, clear all cookies, change my IP, use spun content sometimes rename my images and try to post no more than 2 per day.

Long gone are the days of re-posting a hundred ads per day and using HTML + links otherwise I would be retired by now!

Thanks DreamTFK! I appreciate your response. Here's the thing. I'm just getting started in craigslist. This was the first ad I put up in the jobs section. I'm using a private proxy from anonymous-proxies.net. Ran CCleaner before I posted and flagged it "best of" for few rounds. The ad showed as pending in the craigslist account for several hours, not showing up when I was checking the jobs section, and then all of a sudden, it showed in my account as red, flagged for removal.

How could it be "duplicate or similar content" if it was the first and only ad I posted?

The content nor the title was "spammy". It was an unpaid ad, and I did have a copy and past url that led to a video with an email opt in.

          I appreciate any input.

The CL algorithms and spam filters have gotten much more complex or strict. Was this a brand new account never used before? If they are auto flagging you then the chances are pretty good you have violated their TOS somehow and they know it's you.

        yes CL is still the best / useful for your business campaigns even though it's bit tough nowadays, but u can get the best results from CL using following techniques;

        use Geo targeted US ips
use Verizon PVAs (phone verified accounts)
post 1 ad per 24-hrs. with 1 PVA
        change/rephrase your ad's content/image
use Ccleaner (remove all cookies, history etc.)
        change your system name
        don't use autoposter softwares...

Regarding cars, depending on your mechanical ability, you can strip them down and sell used car parts. That works for any old mechanical items. Think of the Car/lawn mower/watch as a bulk item and then sell them by the piece. Also for free stuff, there's always the site freecycle. As long as you're willing to pick up the stuff, people give away a lot of stuff.

My best friend has been making a living for the past couple of years with Craigslist/Ebay arbitrage. He buys collections of items on Craigslist and negotiates down to the bone and then turns around and sells them on ebay. He's just getting by and really doesn't even want to upgrade in any way. He's actually doing this with only a Dial up connection.

      Hey...good thread!

I actually made my first dollar on craigslist as well...no kidding...

I have found that you will find many freelancers that are looking to sell their services but they have no website, yellow page listing, yelp listing, facebook fan page..etc etc

Create a package of all of these and label it generically for your area

example "iphone repair pros"...find someone who fixes iphones and sell them the bundle.

This has worked out really great for me...hope this helps!

I ask myself how many people place ads on CL (and other classified sites) and instead of trying to place a link to their squeeze page or blog, use a toll-free phone number for people to call 24/7, having them listen to a pre-recorded message which prompts them to visit their blog / squeeze page at the end of the message. Or simply asks them to leave their name and e-mail address to receive a free eBook or more information.

          You`re welcome.

I was having some small success placing classified ads in newspapers back in the pre-internet days of 1991 and listing a toll-free number for people to call 24-7 and listen to a voice-mail pre-recorded sales message of about 2 minutes and asking them to leave their name and home address to receive a small booklet I mailed to them C.O.D. (collect on delivery) through UPS. The UPS driver and I became good friends, he was coming to my apartment so often to pick up all the small padded envelopes with the booklets I was sending out C.O.D. every week.

This was a method I learned from Eileen and T.J. Rohleder from a course they had available back in those pre-internet days of the early 1990`s. I forget the exact name of the course / book.

These days, you can deliver an eBook via e-mail (cheaper than creating / printing and sending REAL booklets through UPS) and have a higher profit margin by using this hybrid "old skool" / "new school" method. My profit margin was VERY small, so I eventually stopped using that method because the ROI was not worth the time and effort I was putting into it.

But it is not 1991 any more, and there are cheaper, more efficient ways of doing things now with the modern miracle called the "internet".

Even though you cannot hyperlink on CL anymore, I have found a good work around. It does involve the ability to be able to create a decent sized graphic image in which you use a red arrow to point to the "contact" or "reply" button in the top left corner of the ad.

Basically what I do is create a graphic advertising my squeeze page or whatever biz opp I am advertising. I then explain with text underneath the image how people can get information about the biz opp.

I will usually put at the bottom of the graphic something like "Here's how to get yours:"

Then, right underneath that I will just write in the text portion of the ad something like:

"1. Copy & paste the following link into your browser: my link here (easiest way)

    2. Follow the red arrow above and click on the "reply" button above and send me an email requesting the information. I will get back to you within 2 hours."

I find that most people will pick option 1 and choose to copy & paste the link into their browser. However, I do get emails as well. I actually would rather get an email because that gives me a chance to personally respond pre-sell the biz opp a little bit better. It also lets them know there is a real person on the other end whom they can contact again if they need help with something.

I find it to be very effective. Sometimes the ads do get flagged, but not very often.

Just remember that no matter what happens Internet Marketing is here to stay and whatever they do to try and thwart us always leads to another technique that we can make work. In a way it's kind of good that these big sites try and challenge us because it keeps us thinking of new ways to sell!

Craigslist is where I made some money as well! Love classified advertising for free! I made money from personal things I sold from home and also received tons of leads on business opportunity ads. Awesome site to use.

I love it so much, I plan to use other sites like USfree ads, backpage, kijiji, oxl, beautyyourprice, epage and more!!!! There are so many out there. Just research online and you will find several more to use.

This is a perfect use for the one-shot autoresponder built into almost every hosting account.

Set up the autoreply to respond instantly, then forward the email to your regular account for your personal attention. In the autoreply, you can provide some preliminary info, links, and a promise to get back with them.

Everybody is so fixated on autoresponder services, but they ignore the many ways that one-shots and email forwards can be used, both on their own and as list-building tools.

I made close to $15k in a few months doing this until the company I was using for the leads stopped the offer and I started getting blocked on CL.

I tried other offers but decided to give up after having to constantly change tactics to keep them live.

  • My girlfriend and I actually supported ourselves, when we first moved to Hawaii, using craigslist to buy cheap used products and then resell them for higher prices on craigslist.

Thats what I am talking about see... its about attitude and resoursefulness... I believe you could make a living in so called third world countries as well... I know because we did it... Being resourceful, having technical skills as well as a myriad of otthers will help you differentiate your self in a marketplace...

Craigslist has a "moral and legal responsibility" in its commitments to the public's safety. This is why many peoples would like to work with Craigslist.

Finding the right niche or product is the key. Once you have that and you get them to respond to your unique ad, whether by phone number or email reply, then you can send them to the product page or squeeze page.

I have to disagree, that part is important but not all that difficult.

Working around CL's strict posting rules is the key.
