I see that Skype provides code to put Skype on a web page:
Skype URI Tutorial: Webpages

Why would someone put Skype link or button on a web page?

When a visitor to a web site page selects the Skype button what happens?

Not sure exactly but I am guessing they would make a call the persons Skype account. For live voice support etc. Skype is still great as a means to support customers.

Make no mistake about it, Skype is massively popular and your target demographic is probably on it.

And the human touch is a great way to conduct business.

It seems based upon their code that the buttons serve different functions.

    Good find

I'm curious to know: When a visitor to a web site page selects the Skype button what happens next? Does the Skype log-in page appear? For the web-site visiting-customer? If so, when the website-visiting-customer logs-into his own Skype account, does the website's customer-service skype-number automatically connect? What happens if the website's Skype person is unavailable?

Based upon my knowledge of the Skype API, clicking will launch Skype.exe on the end-users machine, and then attempt to engage whatever sequence the specific button intended.

Either placing a call, launching a conversation, or what have you.

The Skype Protocol is a little shaky to me. (I have dealt with it in the past, and it's difficult to get very precise answers to complex questions). Your best bet would be to contact Skype support. (It's tricky contacting them directly, but they DO have a Live Chat Support and Email Support if you dig deep enough on the Skype homepage).
