Giving Away Products?

Do you think it's a bad idea to give away reports to get people to opt in?

I was thinking that yeh you would get more subscribers, but wouldnt a list full of people who subscribed because they liked your content be better than a list full of freebie seekers?

What do you think?

the best way is to give a free report that influences the desire to buy your paid offer.

    Isn't the report your content?

If so, aren't they opting in because they at least like the content you are offering, or the benefits you claim it will provide?

We all want people to sign up and follow us because they like our content or because they think we're bloody marvellous, and some will.

If you post continually good content, people will want to see what you're up to.

The trouble is that many people come across your site whilst flying around the internet - they may only be there for a few seconds. Not long enough to get the full measure of your posts.

Imagine a fish swimming down a river - he might jump out of the water and into the waiting fisherman's bucket but it's unlikely. He's more likely to be interested in a tasty fly that's being dangled in front of him.

A free report is just a good ‘hook’ to catch your potential future customer.

People like to get something of value for free, however, If you give away total rubbish - your visitors might be on their way again sooner than you can blink!

Thanks David, a good point made in an entertaining way. I have a good idea of a unique report I could give away, and will put it together and take your advice after reading this.

Everyone else, same consensus of opinion so I will create a free report. Thanks.

To give a content for free is a good idea to create a list of prospects. In case your report deals with a specific niche or field of knowledge it addressed to a targeted audience. No doubt some of the them are free-riders but we can never expect a 100% conversion. I would consider such free reports as a two-way communication where you respond to your visitors interests and concerns. And that is how you build your authority.

So I would assume that if you can do something free of charge for your visitors then do it. And consider it as a bonus in advance. But if creating a quality content is actually your business then you should rather think on how you market it and how to convince them to pay for it.

There's no reason you can't do both (i.e. offer a freebie and allow people to sign up just because they like your blog). I use that strategy on several sites.

I also am able to track which route people take to my lists and I find that opt-ins via the "lead magnet" are much, MUCH higher than people who just opt-in.

There's a good reason that all the gurus tell you that the fastest way to build a list is to give something of value away.

Personally, I think you should not announce your free gift since it is more likely to attract freebie seekers. You might get less optins but the ones you will get will be trully interested in what you have to offer. You could try just not to use the word "free" and let the rest as is.

However it's a good thing to offer unannounced gifts to build trust. But you should not mention it on the optin form.

Most successful marketers that I know refine their lists over time. After they initially get folks to opt in, they refine or segment their lists. Freebie seekers are sifted out over time, but some of them will eventually purchase from you if you do a good job of appealing to their interests. There's nothing wrong with giving everyone a chance to be exposed to your business. Ultimately, the quality and focus of what you offer in the niche will determine your list size and responsiveness; but there's nothing wrong with "qualifying" your subscribers after they are on your list instead of before.

      Good luck,

      Steve
