It all depends on what you need the platform to do for you. Many would argue they both can do the same thing, however WP has a wider open source network - although Joomla is catching up quickly - in fact I think Joomla will be dominant soon as well.

I use BOTH platforms and have come to the conclusion that for the automated type of drip content blogs, which I don't really intend on updating personally - in other words automated - I choose Word Press. These sites are the silent feeder and affiliate feeds. I don't put my name on them.

For larger projects that I do manage and update personally (or outsource) with fresh written, original content then for me, no question it's Joomla! and I also use JoomlaShack templates. These sites are my lead sites with my videos and products and I proudly put my name on them.

      Hope that helps.

Wordpress. It has a much larger following, and is a lot easier to program for. The API is much better in my opinion.

Right now with the JS redirect virus hackers out in force the best question is which is less likely to end up rubble if they decide to take you down. Seriously.

Joomla is massively more powerful and flexible than WP in just about ever way.

I have used it from the start as well as being involved. If I can't find an extension then I develop one.

Joomla 1.5 was a big step forward - built in SEF etc - but the coming 1.6 will be another big step forward and the plans after that are amazing.

WP is a very basic CMS in a way, but one that is absolutely fine for most IM now.

But as IM advances you need the tools to stay ahead, and only Joomla can provide that IMO.

As i think having my own domain like last time is better than hosting with blogger.com
more personalized and professional. But i am not saying that blogger.com is no good as it provided all the necessary tools to administer and change the website either with GUI or coding the backend scripts. Great online tool.

I am wondering if my seo done for my blogs will they go to my page or to blogspot.com as i am just a directory in blogger.com

and for getting traffic is it better to have own domain or no difference with blogspot.com ?

Joomla is supported by a vast array of extensions - most of which are free.

If an extension does not exist it is easy to get one developed.

SEF/SEO is integrated now, but there are plenty of plugins for metadata etc.

Comparing WP to Joomla is like comparing a Ford Pinto to a Lamborghini

Again though - WP gets the job done in IM and well - I am not knocking it - but Google are on to blogs - or the way they are used or abused - but they love Joomla - they also support it in various ways.

One of my main areas of focus is developing Joomla for IM and membership sites.

Joomla is for creating powerful, processional sites - not IM tricks.

I have been involved in IM tricks for many years - long before Google - have developed software with a friend of mine who is a legend in the area - used all sorts of strategies - everything.

Conclusion - not worth the effort, and certainly not in the long-term.

Virtually every highest earning IM business I know is based around a single site - Joomla is perfect for that.

WP if you are starting out (because you don't even need to host it on your own server) and Joomla for more control. That said I need a quick and easy way to update content on my blog sites and for that Joomla is overkill, WP is much easier.

I've been using mambo and then when joomla came out I started using that, and I can say it is really more extensive than wordpress. However for someone just starting out, I think wordpress is an easier option, but for a shopping cart environment, I would say take some tiem to figure joomla out.

There are large communities ready to help, and a lot of documentations and themes so you're never lost with both either way.

WP is much easier for people starting out because it is so simple - but that is also its shortcoming.

At the final analysis WP is for blogging, and without wishing to upset anyone blogging is not and never will be - for most - a long-term business strategy.

If you want to build an IM business then build one, and Joomla is the only way to go. I am not including the likes of Mambo, Drupal and other CMS of course.

Template does not matter from an SEO perspective. SEO it is all about site structure and Joomla can do all that.

Templates are important from a visitor perspective of course, and that will largely depend on the niche.

Having had a play with both WP and Joomla I'd have to agree WP for quickness but Joomla is absolutelt MINT as a content management system.
The best way to decide which you prefer is to download XAMPP (a free package containing Apache/PHP and MySQL), install both WP and Joomla onto your own machine and compare the functionality.

You'll find that you soon become an expert on both and that can't be a bad thing.

    Cheers

no doubt you would want to go with WordPress
whatever your goal might be. WP is user friendly, SEO friendly
and simply friendlier than any other platform.

It is totally customizable and suits every damn need you might have.

    Hi,

I started off with joomla, but have recently done a site in wordpress as I wanted to know what all the fuss is about. I like wordpress as it is very user friendly, you do have to remember though that wordpress isn't really a CMS, its more like an advanced blog. If your project is simple use wordpress, if it is complex use joomla.

As others have stated comparing Joomla with WP is like comparing apples and oranges - there really is no basis of comparison.

However, I don't find Joomla so hard to use as some have inferred. Everything has a learning curve you just have to dive in and get wet.

I started using it when I was newbie (well, I actually started of with Mambo and changed to Joomla). Now all these years later I am still using it. I also use Wordpress - sometimes on the same site! They're both great for what they do.

I think a wordpress is much easier than Joomla. I did try using Joomla once but it is just
hard... the other alternatives will be Drupal but it is hard to use which I don't really understand how the system works even I have 3 years experience in computer/network system administration in the past.

WordPress is #1 for Blogging - nothing else comes even close. The 5,432 plug-ins available represent state-of-the-art programming and are easy to load, and maintain.

Simple Machine Forum (SMF) is #1 for state of the art chat rooms.

All these free programs are fun to play with but taking one and making money is a different thing. WP is my recommendation for Blogging with SMF for chat rooms.

The problem, with all these free programs, are the thousands of free applications that Geeks write - many blow up and destroy your MySQL and you had better have a current backup or you are dead.

WP and SMF are rock steady - I've never had a single plug-in/module ever hurt my websites. Joomla is a horror story of add on modules harming the MySQL and if you don't have backups of your MySQL you are SOL.

Here is a great review site The CMS Matrix - cmsmatrix.org - The Content Management Comparison Tool
I and many others moved in droves from SMF when PHPBB3 was launched.

SMF is solid - I still have two large sites running on it - but development is patchy.

PHPBB3 has an excellent external interface.

I fully integrate Joomla and PHPBB3 so there is only one registration - through Joomla - and the PHPBB3 looks identical to the Joomla site. As do the social networking, download libraries etc.

Hence the power of Joomla - even though I have mod'd somewhat.

You can integrate SMF and WP and SMF has a module that allows for a full CMS so that's still my recommendation.

Like I said, reliability of commercial usage should be the #1 topic when reviewing freebee programs. Joomla has lots of problems in this area.

The #2 topic should be backups of ALL your websites and ALL MySQLs - I make one each morning and download it to my hard drive which then backuped off site with Carbonite. I can sleep at night.

But Joomla is undoubtedly the most robust in terms of gadgets; commercial reliability is a totally different subject.

My average WP site has 25+ plug-in installed - that's 25 Geeks who never talked to each other and hopefully won't step on each other's toes.
As a forum platform I prefer SMF to PHPBB. In fact I originally switched to SMF from PHPBB2 and migrated all the data.

The reason I like PHPBB3 is because of the ability to closely integrate it with Joomla both at user and theme level.

The previous Joomla-SMF bridges really were clunky and never worked that well.

If I was choosing a standalone forum I would use SMF. If I was integrating it with Joomla I use PHPBB3.

            I agree about backups.

I have cron jobs that dump the mySQL databases and move them elsewhere automatically.

Not backing up mySQL is really asking for trouble, and many find it.

Well that is just one reason why I operate my own servers and manage them from the command line.

I automatically dump the databases with a cron, and if one gets corrupted I simply restore he last dump from the command line. Back online in 5 minutes.

WP is much easier for sure, but WP is designed for blogging not site building, although it can be sort of used for site building.

The message from Joomla users here, including myself, is that if you wish to build content sites that Google love, and with almost infinite flexibility and potential, Joomla is well worth the learning curve - and it is a learning curve.

My blog is a Wordpress blog hosted on my own server. I can't compare the two as I'm only familiar wit Wordpress. Wordpress fulfills all my needs as it has all the features I could ever want in a blog. Factor into that all the available plugins and you're left with a cool platform.

Out of the box Joomla is more flexible. However you can pretty much do everything you want with Wordpress plugins. The thing is, these "plugins" are on their own right, complete web applications that use very little of wordpress infrustructure.

If you're a newbie Wordpress is probably better. However if you're trying to do something more advanced then learning Joomla or coding it yourself might be a better solution.

I don't have an issue with Hostgator at all - they have always been the best shared host.

I personally could not function without root shell access to Linux for all the admin, management and in particular security.

You can get a VPS for around $40 per month, and that really is an excellent IM investment.

Of course you would need to learn command line Linux to get any benefit from it.

Thanks Guys for All the Valuable Feedbacks,

I had installed Joomla 1.5 and the Search Engine Friendly URLs and apache mode rewrite is having some issue, I had rename the htaccess.txt to .htacess afew times and before that the URL and suffixes cannot work properly. Now i had done a rename of the file and re-enabled it for the third time.

Not sure if it the SEF and suffixes will run away again and show a corrupted web page
So far so good for now, as I am testing to it

My concern is that after I had done quite a substantial amount of work, then the SEF and suffixes give way again, this will definitely look BAD if i go LIVE/Production

      Any Advice here appreciated

        Any Advice here appreciated

        Regards,

        Thanks
Have you checked that the SEF option is checked in the global settings?

If mod_rewrite is installed and working and you renamed to .htaccess it should work fine.

I suggest you get some tech support from the hosting provider if it doesn't.

This is one of the debates or choices we all have to make. If you choose wordpress - joomla will be in the back of your mind.

If you choose Joomla, Drupal will be in your head.

I'm sticking with wordpress for now - despite what others say I always feel uncomfortable using Joomla.

have not installed Drupal for some time and need to check out whats new.

I will stick with wordpress and one day switch to building on Drupal.

I answered this a few minutes ago but it seems to have disappeared.

Anyway - if mod_rewrite is working and you have got the SEF set in Joomla admin, then I would contact your hosting company. It should work fine if the server is configured properly.

Here's an article I coincidentally came across recently that goes over pros and cons of WP vs Joomla, it's also pretty recent and up to date and I agree pretty much with everything it says (no affiliation):

Playing With Wire Open Source and usability: Joomla vs. WordPress

Basically, Joomla is more powerful and has more potential features, while WordPress is simpler, easier to use, faster to get started with, and has a bigger community for support. In my opinion WordPress wins out in the end.

PS, I also used Drupal for a good while before I jumped ship to WP when I started banging against its more complex and heavy problems.

Hi everyone don't know a lot about Joomla but have used wordpress for ages and love the simplicity of working with it. True it is a blogging platform but with the add pages facility and a nice theme you can make it look like a professional website too.

I also use Hostgator for my hosting and find them fantastic. I used to use easyspace and then godaddy and both were awful to deal with. When I first started with Hostgator I had a problem adding domains so used their online chat support and received great customer service...which is so important in my opinion!
