[IMPORTANT] RE: Your Warrior Forum User Account

I just got this email. Subject is the title of this post.

I gotta say I've never seen this before. Any one else?

Hello. I saw your post on Warrior Forum and wanted to contact you immediately.

My account was banned on there RECENTLY when I disagreed with a over zealous moderator!!

I tried to make another account and that one was immedialy banned too.

I was wondering if you no longer use your account if you would like to sell it to me?

If the account is in good standing I can pay for it with PayPal for a fair price.

Let me know...
Do I seem like I would go for this?

I don't know whether to be amused or pissed off.

Brent

  • Hey Brent, I haven't received this one but I'm sure the mods will love it lol. I would definitely report it so we can keep this off WF. Seems pretty shady to me . . .

Lol I got one of those too.

Seems like someone is trying to buy accounts in good standing.

They probably have a criteria they follow when determine who to contact like stats and such.

I ignored it. Pretty funny though.

yeah, you work hard to make a name for yourself and someone thinks he`ll give you 10$ and ruin your name with spam or whatever. I really am curious if anyone will fall for this

Somebody will. Then the guy will repeat the things that got him banned originally and the "seller" will probably end up with a dispute or chargeback for the sale when he gets banned again. If they don't get hit with it before that...

This dude is contacting a fair number of people. The ones who've reported it so far are not exactly "likely candidates."

Guys, really, if anyone is thinking of doing this but isn`t really sure just yet.. DON'T

The guy has done something to get him banned. He will do that with your acc, you will get banned and then if you want to make a new one, you`ll be banned for his reasons At least find yourself a good reason to get banned, one that`s personalized by you)

Caliban just CC'd me on a response he sent to the guy. After pointing out why this is a Bad Idea, he added this hypothetical (reprinted with permission):

Once I have your money, I can just tell the Warrior Forum and you'll be banned again. So, you know, think about that when someone says "yes" to this - because, by definition, that someone DOES NOT CARE if he gets banned.
And if they're going to tell us, they'll probably include the Paypal address that the person used.

The interesting thing is that this person has set himself up for a slam-dunk prosecution for unauthorized access to a protected computer system. He is obviously very clear on the fact that he is not allowed here, and is trying to fake his way around that prohibition.

Not likely that anyone will pursue it, but the legal footing in a situation like this is potentially quite dangerous for the buyer if they did.

I got the same one today and I was actually going to post a thread about it myself! It seems someone is trying to buy up a bunch of Warrior Forum accounts in good standing!

I didn't even bother replying back because I would NEVER sell my Warrior Forum account!

You know what gets me is you hear all these people who have been banned from the forum talking about how they don't care, they didn't like the forum anyway, etc, etc. Then you get an email like this and it makes you realize how much they are full of crap!

A Warrior Forum account is like gold as far as I'm concerned. I've learned so many awesome things from this forum, made so many connections and made a lot of money promoting WSOs, etc. Why would I ever put that in jeopardy?

And IMO it is NOT easy to get banned from this forum. You have to act like a jerk or constantly break the TOS (and if you break the TOS and then claim it's not your fault because you haven't read them, then shame on you), and that is what these people have done, and now they regret it and are trying to resort to buying other member's accounts.

Needless to say I guarantee they are not having any luck because I doubt anyone who has an account in good standing is going to sell it!

I'm not sure why this person would ask me as I have been a member in good standing for over 2 years. I think he thinks if he targets members who have been around a while with a fair number of posts then it will be less suspicious when he starts posting with their accounts?

My question is if he starts posting with a purchased account won't the same IP come up that he got banned with and trigger an alert to the mods? I mean, I have no idea of how mods identify people who have been banned and come back but I would think it must have something to do with the same IP popping up? Unless he is going to change his IP? I dunno.

@Paul Myers - Just sent you the guy's details in a PM.

Sure it is. Refuse to honor a posted refund policy. Post spam on your first day. Ask for help sending spam. Blah blah. Lots of easy ways to get nuked here.

It's much harder to get perma-banned if you've been around for a while. Short-term temporary bans are a different story. They're intended to make people think about why what they did is harmful to the forum. Or, if they refuse to consider that, to at least realize continuing the same behavior won't get them what they want.

The percentage of people who get even a temporary ban, outside of drive-by spammers, is tiny. Way less than 1%. Hell, most people can be here for years and never need to interact with a mod in any "official" capacity at all, unless they're asking for help with something.

[chuckle] He tried to buy Don van Fossen's account, and Don's been a member here for 6 or 8 years and has a long history as both a poster and a seller. Gonna be hard to fake that kind of persona, especially for someone like this dude.
I mean, I have no idea of how mods identify people who have been banned and come back but I would think it must have something to do with the same IP popping up?
That's only a small part of it. There are all sorts of signals, and changing IPs is only one factor. Given the number of people who use proxies as a normal part of honest surfing, we'd be fools to rely only on that.

It's possible (even easy) to slip through the system, but if you attract the mods' attention we're usually going to figure out what's going on. If you don't attract our attention, you're probably not doing anything we care much about anyway.

Our goal is to keep the system working with as little interference as is reasonable. That means some things get by, but it beats the alternative.

Thanks for sending me the info. That kind of help is always appreciated.

I also personally think it's hard to get banned from WF. Users just have to read the rules and use some common sense. Then again, I also lurked around here for a long time before I started to post, so I knew how things worked even before creating my account.

But re: the topic at hand. I value my account too much to sell it to some lowlife who will probably get it banned within a week. Not to mention they'll probably do a chargeback or dispute the payment after getting access to your account.

Anyone who does actually sell their account probably deserves it. There's no honor among cheaters.

I wondered the same thing. The email used to contact me is one I rarely use and the only place I know it is posted is in two (now closed) WFH threads.

Maybe they are targeting by emails they find posted here?

Just tell him that your online reputation is tied to your reputation on the WF and your reputation has a lot of value. Therefore, 100k sounds like a fair price to you.

See what he says. At minimum it'll chase the joker off.

The other (and possibly funnier) option ... Ask him what he means by "fair price."

No matter what he responds back with, add two zeros to it. If he says he'd pay 500 then you just tell him you couldn't possibly accept less than 50,000 (and say what I mentioned above about your reputation).

Post his response here on the thread so we can all get a good laugh.

I considered seeing what he would offer. I suppose there is a number but it would have to be insanely high...like buy a private island range.

I kid of course, I'd pay to rid the net of this kind of loser.

Shows you the great value being a member of this forum is. Seriously, this forum has changed my life and helped my livelihood.

Not surprised those who are banned would do anything to get back.

I think Paul is right, someone doing this will fall into the same pattern
and be right back in the banned file.

Looks like he bought a list of addresses someone scraped from posts on the forum. He's hit a LOT of people.

$5 each, eh? Not gonna get anything useful for that.
