USA Warriors, how do you feel about this?

Hi,

If you are a USA user, how do you feel about doing business with people in the UK? Does a .co.uk domain name have any impact on your decision?

Thanks!

  • For me personally it wouldn't bother me, but I know more about IM than the 'average' American. Some people might still be confused or hesitant to use a .co.uk domain for any type of purchase, just because they aren't used to it.

That being said, I think that people are slowly coming to accept non .com/.net/.org TLDs.

    Hey AdwordsMogul,

I recently debated over this before purchasing a URL. As internet marketers fundamentally we know that there is no difference and a site with information is just that...and good information can come from anywhere. However, if you are selling something then I would say 100% that it would make a huge difference. If you are an info site, I think it will also have an impact but not as large as if you were selling something.

I eventually brought a .com after testing a site out on my wife.

When I asked my wife about a UK site, she said, "Why would I go there, It's for the people in the UK". For me that did it. It's different the other way around. Someone in the UK will easily go to a .com. We are spoiled here in the US and need everything tailored to us.

    Good Luck

I was worried about this before I registered my domain for my writing site, but every American I spoke to said it wouldn't influence their decision in the slightest. I think it largely depends on what is being sold and the type of product or service that is on offer. I think in terms of companies offering SEO services, that kind of thing USA users may want an American company, but for freelance writing it doesn't seem to be a problem.

Honestly, the UK is one country I trust in business relationships. However, having said that, if you are targeting only U.S. customers, then I would stick with a .com domain.

    Just my opinion.

Thanks so much for the help! I really appreciate it.

So basically, for sophisticated marketers it doesn't matter but since most people are not marketers, I think I will use .com for the USA sales.

In fact, I'll focus on the .com and work on .co.uk only if necessary!

I beat this drum a lot and pretty hard ... but why not test it?

If you ask you'll get some opinions probably saying "it will matter," and some saying, "It won't matter."

The best way to know for sure, specifically for the people you are attracting to your list and attracting to your site is to test it out. Do an A/B split test and then look at the results.

Let your market tell you how it feels with their credit cards. Then you'll know directly from the people that really matter.

Personally, it would not make a difference, as long as the payment currency, etc., is spelled out clearly. I've made purchases that appeared to be in American dollars and found the charge in pounds or euros. Same number, different currency, double the real cost or more...

For consumer goods, this would be my thought as a marketer.

I don't pay too much attention to the domain, but rather focus on the content. Although, as a few users said above the ".com" looks a lot better and more professional.

Hmm... one reason why I've been concerned is that I believe most USA users instinctively type in .com - even if you tell them it's .co.uk .

It's similar to .me, .mobi, and the new domains that are out - people are just not used to them.

As long as the person is trustworthy and professional, the TLD really doesn't matter to me (outside of maybe .info). For me, it's more about how the person presents himself/herself.

If I have a new client in a foreign country, I usually ask for 100% of my fee upfront. It would be hard enough to get someone in the states to pay up... if someone overseas bailed on payment, I'd be SOL.

Other than that, I'm fine with it. I've had several clients in the UK, and even more in Australia.

Generally speaking, no. I've had website designers and strategic partners from the UK. If anything I tend to trust doing business with people in that country more than most because of the good history I've had.

Having writtent that, I still do my part: I perform my due diligence, I ask for references when necessary, and don't do business with anyone or any organization if I don't feel I can trust them or there are any red flags.

One of my favorite website designers is from the UK, the guy flat out rocks!

In my experience (and I'm a Brit who's lived on both sides of the “pond”), people tend to be more concerned with what currency the product or service is priced in rather than the domain. People from the US seem to be reluctant to convert another currency into Dollars; whereas, people from the UK and elsewhere don't have a problem making purchases in USD.
