How much time do you take to write one post of your blog?

Need advice regarding content writing.
How much time do you take to write a unique content with original ideas. I know there is no limit on the amount of time we do for research. If the post is around 800-900 words. But I just wanted to compare notes to understand how slow or fast I need to be or what I am doing wrong. I will appreciate all of your replies. Also what is the source of your research. Recently I read that abebooks dot com is a good source from copyblogger.

Use feedly to aggregate content from various relevant website in your niche. This will give you unlimited ideas for content - then you write you own version and experience.
Writing content depends on what I'm writing. I might include some images or video. But if I was just writing a 400 word article then it would take me no more than 10 minutes. Sometimes I'll use speech recognition software and it might take less time.
To speed things up have a list of title ideas that you write down as you do your research and then when you come write you can do so without having to stop and think of new content ideas.

It is hard to know what you are doing wrong.
I can write a blog post of 800 words in about 30 minutes assuming no in depth research is needed. You get into a groove with these things. When I started out (Way back!!) I would spend a day producing a piece of content and still fret about it.

You get quicker and better as you practice.

That should take you around an hour to write, and 15 min to edit.

Sure, you can write it faster, but will it be readable by others?

If you type at less than 80 wpm you will benefit from word expander software voice recognition software.

One tip: Read the post out loud to yourself. You'll catch a lot of typos.

Avoid long paragraphs and write your intro last.

According to me, quality is more important than quantity. I always try to do my best while writing an article. Depending on my own experience I can say that it varies from person to person. You may take 2 hours of time to write a high quality article. Someone else might take more than that to create another one. Different people have different skills and everyone is not same. So the time someone should take to write a good quality article varies. So I would say it totally depends on your own writing skills.

I don't really have a source of research except trial, error and experience.

When I first started blogging writing quality content was a HUGE challenge for me. My posts were of exceptional standards but it was just taking way too long to create them - anything up to 9 hours.

So, to help improve my writing speed I began challenging myself with time blocks. I also created a simple formula for the structure of my content - What, Why and How.

And each time I sit down to write I always strive to finish the post faster than the previous one, but it must remain quality content or it doesn't get published.

With a combination of the three things above I can now have a post written and published in two and a half hours (maximum).

    Hope that helps!
    Kerry

  • An 800-900 word article will take me anywhere from 15 minutes to about an hour, depending on the topic and how much research I have to do. I try to do as much writing as I can on topics that I am already very knowledgeable on to keep the research time down.

Of course, that's not always possible.

  • I can write an article in a half hour or less.

    BUT...

...for super high-quality stuff written for my own blogs, it's not unusual for me to spend 4 - 8 hours, if not more, on each piece (I only produce them once a week, if even). These pieces are exceptionally long, though, at around 2000 - 3000 words, and I inject copywriting techniques to drag people in, entertain them, and inspire them to action.

A piece that long also needs a lot of redrafting to make it flow from start to finish. And to make it a gripping read that tugs emotions and/or makes people grin all throughout.

Could I throw it up as a rough without editing and still have it be better than a lot of stuff you see out there?

    Yeah, probably.

But I don't want my articles to just be better than most of the stuff out there.

I want them to be top of the line.

I want them to be so good people can't help but comment to say how inspired they are (and no I'm not talking about the link spammers).

I want them to email me and say what a fan they are of my work. How it's one of the best pieces they've read.

Or scramble to sign up for my list just so they can get notified when future articles go live.

That's the type of writing that creates raving fans who will follow you for a long time and buy pretty much anything you put out. Even if it's an unrelated book you've written.

And this type of stellar content requires much more personal sacrifice and commitment.

But yeah, if you just want pretty decent content that is good enough to support and market a website, an hour per article is usually okay unless it has special research or formatting (screenshots, etc) needs. In fact, I often still write articles of this caliber for clients, who usually aren't prepared to budget 4 - 8 hours for an article.

Either approach could be used to make money online, depending on your overall strategy. Most definitely.

But I think the intensive process is more conducive to a long-term business strategy that will outlast any current online marketing "trends." As well as fill your working life with passion and the life satisfaction that comes with knowing you're giving something your all.

At the end of the day, it really depends on what you're looking for online...

Agree with Superior Content Creation above. Anyone can hash out a 500 word article in 15 to 20 minutes. Like Superior said though, the quality of the article is what's most important.

I was quite surprised with people above posting 15-30 minutes as time spent writing on their article/ blog-post. I was beginning to think : "Am I the only one who places importance on quality and taking time to edit and re-edit their article?".

I will admit that I've been guilty in the past of hashing out quick articles due to time constraints, but as the old adage goes ... "you get out what you put in".

With a high quality article, you will most definitely get more subscribers, more traffic and more conversions, than if you post 10 low quality articles.

      Moral of the story:

      Quality>>>Quantity.

If you're creating content that's ready to post in an hour you're probably not doing yourself or your readers justice.

Sure you can create a perfectly 'good' blog post in an hour or two that people will think is 'OK' and you might get a handful of social shares and comments but it's unlikely you can create anything truly epic in such short time.

I mean the sort of stuff that gets hundreds of social shares, dozens of comments, recognition and shares / links from authority bloggers in your niche.

I'm not saying that no one can do it with a short 800 word 1/2hr post, I'm sure some can, but the majority not.

My last post took about 2 weeks to be completely ready.

It's over 5,000 words, goes into more detail on the subject than any other content on the subject that I know of, references and quotes authorities, has advice from experts, provides additional tips and reading material, has bonus content, it's nicely designed, breaks everything down into great detail showing people 'how to do' what I'm talking about etc.

Posted around 24hrs ago and already at approx 100 social shares, have had various known bloggers that I've reached out to say they'll be including it in their weekly round up posts, a number of big names on Twitter tweet it out.

I personally could not create content like than in a couple of hours or in 800 words.

    Be honest with yourself....can you?

Personally I won't publish anything under 1000 however, in 90 minutes to 2 hours actual writing and polishing time I'll have it completed.

I don't count research because if I don't write from personal experience I have the research done prior to writing.

As far as where I do research it varies depending on the topic and who's blog is ranking highest for my targeted keyword. Reverse engineer my friend, the research is already done for you.

Actually depends on many factors. There are some issues that are in your head already- you do not have to research. But again writing mood is also to be considered. If I am in mood I can write 800-1000 words in 30/45 minutes. Research and writing needs 2/3 hours to complete!

The time taken all comes down to the point of the post, how much you confidently know about this topic and what research and foundation content you already have.

I now use Evernote to compile ideas for posts, I then drive to work in silence allowing my mind to mull over content ideas which means the post is at least have composed before I get to the actual writing stage.

I would say about an hour from starting the final draft to publishing for a post that I am not that sure about however others can take several weeks to complete.

As mentioned above you will get better (and faster) as you get more practice. I am a nutrition writer so all of my content is researched and I like it to be based on the latest evidence which needs to be critically reviewed by me before I come to my conclusions. I find I need time between research and writing to digest the information properly. I easily spend about 3-5 hours (excluding research) on getting it right.

But this definitely depends on what you are writing about. If I just write my views on the subject I can bash out a thousand words in 30 minutes.

Another thing to look out for is what I like to call Perfectionitis! Until I set myself time limits to get something out (perfect or not) I used to do several drafts changing the style and content but never finishing it properly.

We all face different challenges in our writing and need to overcome them through our own trial and error.

  • It depends on the topic for me. I've written and compiled a post with videos that took me a couple of hours to create and another 2 hours to optimize on and off page.

These videos are normally tutorial vids for my audiences.

If my video is about a trip or travel or inspirational, then I take about 30 mins to an hour.

The more valuable the content Im producing the longer it is.

Depends on your skill level as a writer and also your knowledge of the topic. If its something you are passionate about and have first hand experience in then you should be able to spit it out fairly quickly - under an hour is realistic. If its something new to you or an area that you are not so familiar with, you are going to have to invest more time in research and probably have to edit the article many times to try and create the right flow...thats what I find at least!

I've been erring on the side of TINY blog posts.

This reduces the stress of blogging.

Seriously. I'll be aiming for <=400 word blog posts, see how it works.

It's better than being stretched too thin and not blogging at all.

(I got a very impressive response from blogging great content daily... But this is DIFFICULT to maintain if you write your own material, and also have other projects).

PS: Sorry if this is off topic. To answer your question, it used to take me 20 minutes or so to write a really good blog post. I proof read at least a few times.

Now, it takes me 10 minutes to write the blog post. And 2 to edit.

When first starting to post on my blog, I could put in a number of hours researching the topic and content, coming up with attractive headers, finding images and possible videos. Over time I realised alll focus must be on the reader and what they can gain from the post. With that in mind, time taken was reduced because the goal had slightly changed from impressing myself with an all end post to a post with rich content that the average reader could benefit from. Be genuine, honest and give content that the reader can relate to. 1-2 hrs is average. Could be shorter or longer depending on topic. But time is not the issue. Your message of the post is.

I’m an expert, so all the research was already done. I used to write short 500 word blog posts everyday, and the traffic by blog was getting was nothing encouraging. I did it for years, until I learned that readers like long blog posts.

Since I started writing longer blog posts – around 3000 words, everything dramatically changed. I delay a lot writing my articles because I want to give real knowledge to the public.

Now I publish two articles per week. I delay 3 days to write a perfect article. I write a little bit everyday, always improving my work.

If you want to be a successful blogger, your work must be good. If it is like everyone else’s work you won't beat the competition. You have to do things better than everyone else.

However, this is not enough. Your content is very important, but you still have to do a lot to promote your blog and get enough traffic.

If your content is in a desert, who will evaluate its quality?

It's hard to imagine you can post anything REALLY worthwhile in 10-30 minutes.

IMO your goal for your blog should be to post REALLY GREAT content that makes a buzz in your community / niche, gets a ton of attention, lots of social shares / links / comments, REALLY helps your readers by going further into the topic than most others have.

Sounds like you are just posting for the sake of posting though.

Nothing is better than daily sub 400 word posts that don't really say anything.

Who says you need to blog daily? You don't in most instances.

Exactly. Putting out stuff that's just 'OK' does no one any favors. Not you nor your audience.

As a blogger the singe most important thing is your content and if it's not really special you basically have nothing.

Sure you can build up a small audience, get a few fans, handful of social shares and maybe a small list but ultimately you're probably wasting your time and would be better spent focusing on something else.

Why post stuff that's just "cohesive" though? Why bother running a blog if you're not going to put much effort into it?

It's the public face of your business, the thing people likely see before they see anything else, and it has to be top notch otherwise most people aren't going to take you seriously or show any further interest in what you have to offer.

I'd rather not have a blog online that a bad or mediocre blog.

You say you have other things to do every day as if your blog isn't important, then why not just delete it?

To be honest writing can get really boring sometimes and time consuming especially if you don't like doing it. That is why you should really try outsourcing it. If you pm I can give you a great solution for outsourcing the articles on a very good price. The difference with this solution is that you can reject the articles you don't like and don't pay for them. Or just have them corrected the way you want at no extra cost. Just PM me and we can talk.

That depends on your level of interest in the topic you are writing.

More importantly do you know more about that topic that others like to know but they don't.

The way I see it, the length of the topic is not important. What is really important is:

    1. Is it helpful to others reading it?

    2. Does it serve as permanent solution to whatever problems or passions they might have?

If you are comfortable with doing videos, you might not even need to write anything.

Just get someone - a family member or close friend -to shoot video of you talking or interviewing someone who is an expert in whatever niche or topic you want to write.

Same as doing webinars for your prospects / subscribers and customers.

Having said that, I usually took about 30minutes to an hour to write one post. But that was about manga drawing so for your case, it might be different if you are in another niche.

I don't post just for the hell of it.

      I'm just changing my style.

I like to write very short, DIFFERENT blog posts.

Social shares? I average at least 30+.
