Essential Skills for Online marketers

Hey there warriors

Internet marketing is great. So great that Ive decided that im going to offer my services to local businesses to help them grow (and lets not forget, they will reward me with monies!)

So far my IM level is a 3 (1 being complete newbie, 10 being IM master geek)

I plan to initially offer a few small (local) businesses my services for FREE, as a way to get some experience, a few testimonials, and to start to build a business of my own.

TO THE POINT: I want to take a few basic courses in a few areas to become a better internet marker. so far I think I will learn about the following:

1) Ad words strategies
2) list building
3) writing good copy
4) landing/squeeze page optimization

Anyone out there have any suggestions or pointers?

It depends on what local businesses want you to help with them. You need to master those skills whether its landing pages, traffic or writing sales copy.

I somewhat agree with you, but taking it one step further, instead of reading, DOING would be more proactive.

I'd be very careful about offering your services to (too many) local businesses for free. Becomes very challenging to put a fair worth on your services down the road.
If you offer a freebie I'd only do it for one business and in exchange for some really solid testimonial. Once a small business owner realizes what he or she can get for free, it's quite easy for them to refuse to pay for similar services in future.

Good advice from Mark, a discounted service would be a better idea to start off with. For skills Sitebuilding and traffic generation. I've not really done much offline stuff only for friends of friends but video marketing might be a good thing to learn as videos can be very easy to make and rank..without to much time or money spent.

Its a real metal game. you need to be motivated, very persistent. I would highly recommend logging everything you do. Your process of learning will be very useful later on when you start creating products and offering advice to others

Lots of small local businesses lack social media, have bad reviews on google, and have poor website designs. If you can help a business in those three categories, I guarantee they'll be paying you good money.
