Question for Experienced Domain Resellers

I have a couple of "big niche" domains I'd like to sell. Registered them 2-3 years ago.

Question is - am I better off going the route of standard domain selling sites such as Sitepoint - or should I try to sell them on sites related to the niches?

They are for the dating and gaming niches and don't seem to have any relation to the types of premium domains I see advertised on SP, for example.
Appreciate any advice you can give me.

    Hi Kay,

The venue you choose to sell a domain has everything to do with how the domain can be used.

You say your domains are in the gaming and dating niche, but you don't say whether the domain name is geared to someone who is an "end user" or to someone who is in the business of developing sites to resell, etc. For example, GameDirectory.com would be a good name to sell to a marketer or developer. GreatGames.com would be a good end-user name.

The biggest bang for your buck will almost always be to an "end user". That is, someone who can use the domain you're offering to build their business on. You won't find many end users at sites like sitepoint or domaining forums. You need to go where THEY hang out. In forums that cater to their business. Or, search for companies that are in the industry and contact them directly.

If your domain is more geared to someone in the internet marketing business who wants to develop a site in that niche, THEN sitepoint is a good choice. You should also list it for sale at Sedo.com and Afternic.com.

The difference between an end-user sale as compared to a marketer/developer/reseller sale can be quite substantial (5 to 10 times the price in many cases).

That's what I needed to know - say these are both "end user" domains. I bought them to develop but finally admitted I have little personal interest in those niches. Kept them because they are good names.

Thanks - I'll look for related places to list them.

Great post, Gene! I already had an idea about this in my mind, and then you stated it even better that I believe I would have done.

Kay, there are probably many end users out there that would be interested if you have the perfect domain to rule the roost in the niche. Even better would be that you actually do rule the roost, and you have potential customers in the niche visiting your site every day.

You should try sending out a few emails to potential buyers in the niche. Maybe look up their whois info for their domain, and email them, or even arrange for a phone call. You might actually find someone that is interested.

It is okay to contact me! I have been developing software since 1999, creating many popular products like phpLD.
