Just Enabled Comments On My Blog. Good or Bad?

I started a tech review sites about 9 months ago with comments closed on all posts. But since I'm getting good traffic and readership now I decided to enabled comments on all my posts.

Is this a good idea? I'm hoping it will add value to my site and increase SEO as well...

Any thoughts on this?

i guess it's case by case but comments are always a good thing in my mind. Nothing is more powerful than social proof in my mind. People are attracted by other people and nothing is more attractive than a blog with a hive of activity on it.

Thats what im hoping also, but as it stands I have zero comments on all my posts, but I guess it doesn't make a difference wether the comments are open or not in that case.

Make sure you have a good anti-spam system first. I use a WP one called anti-spam. Growmap was good for a while, but it stopped working. Recaptcha's been good for me on my custom built sites.

It also depends on the niche. I've got some good comments in consumer problem niches (e.g. scams). But I get a lot (well mostly) spam in niches like dating.

And of course I get link removal requests from website owners who spammed my blog and are now spamming me to request I help them out after they've wasted my time and money the first time.

Its a good idea, it will give your site the oppertunity to generate user generated content which is awesome for SEO and social proof.

It also allows the chance for discussions to be had which in turn gives you the chance to show off your skills by answering questions and proving that you're a pro.

Anti spam is going to have to be taken into consideration so bear the above points in mind..

Yes I think this is a very good idea. You should take a few steps to prevent spam though. Akismet spam prevention plug in is very good. Also manually check all of your comments. And make sure you have nofollow for any links.

I agree. Commenting is good, but find a way to eliminate spam.

Very good indeed. You want people to interact with your content on your website. This is very good.

    Hope this helped

I think the main thing is the time factor if you want to engage in conversion/ discussion with others.

Don't forget if you have good domain authority and page rank, expect spammers so you ave that to take into consideration

Yes, I think it's about time you enable your comments plug in. People like to ask questions and interact, specially in tech review niche. You will also get to know many more people in your niche and make contacts. Way to go for generating quality traffic.

Nice, great responses here thanks guys. I looked up all the anti-spam stuff and have some good plugins in place. I had the comments enabled when i first launched the site for a few weeks and was getting killed with spam, part of the reason why i disabled them.

But i dont seem to be getting any spam now with these plugins. Hopefully I can generate some interaction now. Thanks again.

Comments are good. They build up engagement on your site and if you require people to register to post a comment you could have yourself a decent database in no time.

All you need to do is make sure you have a good spam filter in place and set aside some time to moderate any spam comments that slip through

Comments are good, they help you generate content from your visitors which is good for SEO as that page is constantly indexed. User generated content is free for you. Search engines like pages with constant activity on them.

The 2 main thing you need to so is This:

    1. Install the free plugin called Akismet or something to stop spam. Its there within your new wordpress site aldready. Manually approve each comment so it does not look like you are accepting spam replies thats not related to the topic you posted.

    2. Make all your comment links as no follow so that you are not sharing any valuable link juice of your website.

If the comments are valuable to discourse on your chosen topics, then excellent! Akismet (or equiv.) as mentioned, will probably be an absolute must.
When I received worthwhile blog comments (sometimes I did screen before publishing) I made a habit of visiting the commenters site and leaving a insightful comment of my own, where possible. Can be a great way to build up contacts and networks.

Comments are good when moderated and the author replies to comments. Just make sure you don't get too much spam.

Nothing wrong with a little feedback here and there from your readers.

I would prefer using FB comments, so they can be seen on FB as well.
