    Furniture stores
    Internet consultants
    Courier companies
    Various vendors (depending on the business)
    Advertising reps
    Cell phone sellers
    Travel agents (for some businesses)
    Personnel companies
    Security companies
    Drug screening labs
    Banks
    Maintenance and janitorial services
    Lawn service/landscaping companies

    How's that for a start...

      Car dealers, air conditioning services, plumbers, etc.

      Businesses do use most services regular people do.

      So do you want businesses that deal ONLY with other businesses or businesses who are likely to have a long client list of other businesses.

        Businesses who are likely to have a big email database of other business owners (or business employees) that would be ideal for a potential JV.

    Ok guys....let me take this question to the next level. Out of the businesses that are listed above (that cater to business owners) WHICH ONES typically have a large email database?

    John McCabe - To answer your question (on where I'm going with this) I want to discern what type of companies I should target to do a JOINT VENTURE with filling up my workshops in the future.

    Instead of sharing commisssion with outside sales people to fill up the workshop (like David Preston recommends) doing a JV where you will give the business owner's list a 10% discount where they can give value to their lists. So instead of giving a front end and backend commission to the sales person for bringing people to your workshop, you can get people to fill in your seats in a more of a cost efficient manner. This seems to be a powerful yet unexplored realm that many offline warriors have yet to incorporate (including myself).

    Thoughts?

      Chris, I thought that's where you might be going with this. I'm not sure a 10% discount would be enough value to offer for the list owner. You might get a better response by offering them a handful of tickets to use as they please.

      If you plan on filling 25 seats for a workshop, offer the list owner 2 of them to distribute as gifts, prizes, referral bonuses, whatever. Your partner gets a higher value item to offer his list, and you actually come out ahead in the math.

      Of course, since you main objective is butts in chairs, you could do both. Especially if you were to do a teaser teleseminar with the list owner, giving away a pair of tickets at the end, plus a discount for everyone on the list.

      As the number of seats grows, the number you offer for free does not have to grow proportionally. If you grew to filling 100 seats, you might only have to offer 10 comps...

      One question though...

      If you haven't actually tried this yet, how can you state as fact the best businesses to JV with? Or is this just your opinion? Just asking...

        Just an opinion...insticts ect... Obviously...anybody who is willing and has a business owners for a list.....IS THE BEST.

      Who do they rust the most?

      Probably accountants.

      Biggest bang for your buck.

      Plus you can specify the highest grossing conpanies and most luctrarive businesses.

      OMG! Exactly what I'm working on atm!

      I've been working with a business that already does seminars and training for creating a business plan and implementing business building strategies - they don't, however, do anything with online marketing - where I come in.

      I also have a friend who is a mortgage/loan broker - she has business clients. I'll run a 2 hour workshop for free, exclusively for her business clients, and will give her a cut of any extra work I get from the workshop.

      Trying out the work smart not hard theory LOL

    As people are targeting the offline world because they are not online, doesn't that suggest that many of them don't have an online email list.

      Most business owners I talk to [ in my area anyway] do NOT have have an autoresponder BUT they still do use promotional emailing . Because we live in a rural area....many local business don't care that their is not an opt out link in their email and don't complain to anyone as these businesses have a great relationship with their clientele.

      Heck...even my Chamber of Commerce here does promotional emailing but does not have an autoresponder....they just literally send emails to those that are on their personal email list.

      These companies potentially still maybe good to do a JV with in my humble opinion.

    Ok...after looking at the companies above, I've condensed a list of THE BEST COMPANIES that will be the best possible ones to do a JV with when it comes to marketing your workshop. The ones in bold are my favorite.

    1) Sign Companies
    2) Accountants
    3) Computer Repair companies
    4) Lawyers
    5) Insurance Agents

    6) Cleaning Services
    7) Catering Companies
    8) Printing Companies
    9) Office Supply Companies

    10) Promotional Item companies like pens, magnet type marketing companies that specialize in this
    11) Business card makers
    12) Maintenance and janitorial services
    13) Lawn service/landscaping companies
    14) Temp Agencies
    15) Radio Agencies
    16) Video Specialists/Experts


    The question now becomes WHICH ONES typically have a big email database. Where I live....most companies are NOT suffisticated enough where they have a big email database which blows for doing a JV with....BUT PERFECT TO SOLICIT your autoresponder services to.

    Hi Chris

    Very interesting post here and a great list is going on here - I'd just like to add that given the current financial difficulties and that some businesses are having a lot of difficulties - you could perhaps offer a financial service or a business finance consultancy service: helping businesses save money, where to cut spending, how to manage and optimize current resources, how to boost morale and increase sales and attractive proposition to buyers etc....

    Just a suggestion really

      You need to have one hell of a strong value proposition and an incredible relationship with the business owner to pull this off.

      Personal referrals are much easier, more standard, higher frequency and less risky for the business owner.

      But...test it and see. Would be interested in the results.

      Chris,

      My first thought was to find companies that serve businesses around the country, but do their business primarily over email - like promotional products companies.

      But after more thought, because you're targeting businesses to fill up a workshop room (local travel only), I think you would need a list of as many "local" (very limited geography) businesses as possible. That said, I think chambers of commerce, Toastmasters, business networking organizations and such may be your best bet.

      I really like the thought brought up in another thread - Do a JV with a COC whereby they do the hard part - promote your +-$25/seat workshop, and cut them in for a percentage of the workshop revenue. And donate the rest to a charity of their choice. You'll make way more money by having a full room of "serious" (read $25 cost of admission) businesses owners in attendance and cleaning up on back-end/follow-up services. Just a thought!

      Do reciprocal endoresments ... no fees.


      If you don't have a list ... or one that appeals to potential partner ... find an entiy that has that list and broker the deal.

      Endorsements trump all for customer acquisition.

      If you have value to offer ... endorsements are the cheapest lead mechanism amd most profitable and easiest to get.

    The one business you have not had suggested is local publicity:-
    newspapers
    magazines
    local radio
    local TV

    These people will snatch your hand off with any deal and they can write or publish superb advertorials that will get read and have the biggest data bases of all.

    One of my local newspapers, for example, is so keen to get the extra buck, they are actually promoting the eLottery to their readers. if they will promote such a rip-off, imagine what they would do for a genuine business opportunity!
