Multi-Domain GA Conversion Tracking?

I'm new(ish) to Google Analytics and could use some guidance in the following areas:

I want to learn how to setup tracking so that I know which sales are coming from which marketing piece (point A > Z)
I have a main site (WP self hosted) and send visitors from there to 2 different shopping carts for checkout (based on the product)

I just learned about using UTM codes in my links, but I'm not clear how that works when going from site A (my main site/landing pages) to my 3rd party checkout pages and still tracking the source.

So I guess I'm having trouble getting a high level overview of how GA, UTM codes and Goals/conversion funnels all fit together when tracking across multiple domains.

Can anyone point me to some resources, or break it down in an easy to understand format?
