Do I really need .com?

Do I take a big SEO hit if I go with a .info as opposed to .com?

I'd rather pay $1.50 for a .info instead of $10.00 for a .com - as long as there is not a big SEO hit.

Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

  • Nobody has yet proven to me that it matters one whit which
type of domain name I use.

Most of my sites are .com but I have several .info sites and
I don't see any difference in what it takes to get them ranked.

  • There is no difference to the SE. Imagine the trouble they would get themselves into if they gave preference to a particular namespace.

    • .com seems most important to people who plan on selling their site at some point. If you don't plan on selling, use what you like.
  • .info have been abused to heck and Google know it.

.com, .net, .org are fine. Steer clear of .info, .biz etc.

    • Depends on how you get your traffic. If you use ppc, or affiliates, paid ads... then it doesn't matter.
If you are using SEO then maybe it matters alot more.

  • It makes no difference for SEO but it can make a big difference to the way you are seen by visitors.

COM, NET and ORG have good credibility (in some cases ORG can be ideal) but INFO and BIZ and all the others are bad news. Stay away from them. This is not the place to save a few measly dollars.

  • Maybe its an SEO-myth? Anyway I think .com can be more trusted than .info, .biz.. Just my 2 cents

    • For SEO for Google it doesn't make any difference. Microsoft Bing does, however, appear to have a built-in bias against .infos where the old Live Search didn't (I'm still researching this). I don't think Yahoo cares though.

Where it makes a difference is in consumer trust and recognition and resale value of the domain which are separate issues from SEO.
  • Hi,

I agree with many statements said above, if you live outside the US you will also consider using your countries extension such as .co.uk, .fr, com.au etc. Google will rank pages higher in your country if you have the correct extension than say if you have a .com.

  • SEO-wise, there shouldn't be much difference, but .coms gain a bit from type-in traffic (where the user types a phrase into the address bar instead of the search box) if the domain is an often-searched keyword phrase.

The Microsoft Bing observation is interesting.
  • Two points:

    1) .info domains are used much more by 'junk' websites than any other, and the search engines know that. Do they factor that into their algorithm? You decide.

    2) If you are building a business and investing time and money into developing the website, you must own the .com. If you don't, you will lose a good percentage of your traffic to the owner of the .com. That translates to lost sales, lost investment, lost time. Yes, there are very successful sites that use other extensions. But they almost always purchase the .com for big bucks after the fact and redirect it to their main site. Why? It increases their revenue.

    • The .com domain extension has really been the most popular, only problem is that most of the good domain names with .com extension has already been taken. But I think just as long as you have your keyword on it and that it seems to compete on your niche market I can see no reason why it wont succeed online. Just don't forget to flood with quality traffic so it will have better online visibility sometimes it all just lay on this one important factor.
  • I would say for the extra $8.50 the .com is the way to go.

I don't know if there are any issues getting .info ranked as well as .com's but if you think there might be $8.50 is a small price to pay.

That way you are sure you gave yourself every perceived advantage possible.

  • I do not see any difference on SEO between .info & .com...

What type of site will this .info be used for?

My suggestion is...if the .info is for a "non-monitized" site or blog....go for it.

If this is for a business site, I would definately go with a .com.... A measly .75 +/- a month (9.00 yr) is a wise business decision.
