In part one of this series I covered Email Marketing Best Practices.

Today, I am going to talk about banner advertising %u2013 where to put them, and what to focus on with them.

First – what is a banner ad?

A banner ad is one of the advertisements that you find on the top or side of your internet pages.

People see them, and click them when they catch their interest.

There are a lot of places that you can advertise online, but you need to be strategic about the placement of the ad.

This comes back to the subject of targeted traffic that I have mentioned before.

So where do you place the ads?

When you want to promote a product, you want to make sure that it is at sites that your prospects hang out at.

For example, you are selling tractors.

You don't advertise them on a cooking site!

Go to places that sell farm equipment, and place them there.

I know – that probably sounds like something that everyone knows – but you would be surprised at how many don't!

A great place to place these kinds of ads that doesn't cost a lot is to go to people who have blogs on the subject you are promoting.

Ask them if they put your ad on their site... Some will, some won't but it is worth checking!

Ad Placement

Another consideration for your ad is that it is “above the fold.”

What does this mean?

Ideally, when you have an ad you want it to be visible immediately on the screen, without them having to scroll down.
While the ads at the bottom can help, the ads at the top are IMMENSELY more effective.

It could be a banner across the top of the page, or it could be a sidebar ad... just make sure it is seen as much as possible!

To find the blogs and other sites that you want to promote on, simply go to google and search for the terms you think would apply to potential buyers.

For the tractor example, you may do a search for farm equipment and other things that your prospects would look for.

Ad styling

This is a CRITICAL issue for advertising.

Unless you are looking to specifically brand your item, you may find it a lot more effective to not mention your company name. It is ok if you do, but it does depend on your strategy as well.

A lot of times, the best way to get people to click your ads is to be NON-SPECIFIC.

What do I mean by this?

It varies – but for instance if you are selling tractors, don't go into detail about the tractor.

Save that for the landing page. (The website)

The more mystery you put into your ad, the more likely they will go there.

If you are selling a weight loss supplement, you have to stand out from everyone else.

You may have a picture of results – that is a common one though, so you may want to find some other image.

Then you want to mention the effectiveness of the product without mentioning what type of product it is – whether it is a supplement or exercise equipment, or whatever it may be.

Get people to wonder and they will come check it out, if only to see what it is.

Keep reading these articles, and you will see a GREAT marketing strategy that can really boost your sales from those hits – even if the people just shut the window!

A big thing for the ads as well is that it is something that is going to make enough money back to pay for the posting.

If you are making $1 per sale, and paying $25 per ad to get $20 results, you can see it isn't really worth it.

Sometimes you just need a better commission on your product...
