If say I am targeting for gifts in Australia, and a popular search term, "gifts for men" has many high PR global websites like 'askmen' or 'cosmopolitan' ranking for it.

Will it be easy for my website, an Australian website, to rank in top 10, for someone who searches through Australia google but with the default "Any Country" selected?

  • Go for longtail keywords instead, you'll be more likely to get buyer traffic and less competition.

I agree with RealTimeProspecting, phrases like "Gifts for men" is far too general, even if you were able to rank for it, most of the traffic you would get would probably be just looking.

Longer tail key phrases mean the visitor is further along in the buying cycle and more likely to make a purchase.

      Hope this helps.

I come from a place where the market is extremely small. Even "gifts for men" has 880 searches per month. Long tail is way too small.

I guess from your answers, local website doesn't have an advantage over global high PR sites at all then?

    • Local sites work for local queries for example Sydney Dentist or Sydney restaurant. But usually you will only rank in the city you are in, not the whole country.

I don't think "gifts for men" is perceived by Google as a local query. At least not in my neck of the woods. (SoCal.) It just pulls organic results.

You have to have those "local" markers to stand out. Local area names, listing with local google and stuff like that.

Using more specific search keyword gives people accurate search result, so go for long tail keywords like other said above.

It is a really simple tricks.... like when you want to buy something from your area you normally do Google like this.... "movie ticket store in Sidney" and you get some relevan result and you go for buy a movie ticket.

So if you have a website with long tail and targeted keywords it is really easy to get noticed by Google that means you can make $$$ more easily.
