How does a "share this" button work.

I found an article on the use of a "share this" button and I do not understand how they work, can anyone refer me to an explanation of what people that click on them do with them? Thanks, Ed.

Basically, a "share this" button allows your visitors to share your article (usually as a link) on other services like Digg, MySpace, Facebook, StumbleUpon, etc. The more people share your article, the more exposure it gets, which will (or should) result in more traffic for your site. It also provides some analytics tools, so you will be able to track just where your stuff is being shared. If you want, you can check out the ShareThis website for more information about it.

What deskmonkey said, and just to add.. the ShareThis website is the best one to use. It basically gives you the script for any site that you're using, and you can choose which media types to "share" and what you want your window to look like.
Very customizable. I use it on my site as well.
