Just saw this on Paypal...

Warriors,

Recently I came across a new site called Selfie.com and noticed a video playing in the background of it's home page. I now have noticed the same time of thing playing in the background of Paypal's home page.

Question: Does anyone know what type of programming that is or how difficult that is to do. Thought it may serve as a fun squeeze page background.

Your thoughts???

Thanks,

  • This is call HTML 5. It is done via using video tag. Quite easy to do it. HTML5 can be use for coding flash videos using plain html coding. This is suitable for mobile device usage when flash is not supported.

OK great; Thanks! So you are saying it is suitable for mobile devices as is?

This is possible with HTML5 and CSS. You have to embed the video with HTML5 and use the parameters for autoplay and loop. With CSS you can put the video in the background with z-index.

You could always check the source code to have an idea how it is done:

Type the following in your browser.

    Code:
    view-source:http://selfie.com/
It's a video background instead of an image and the video does not play on mobile (it did not in my test for this site). It's replaced by moving images as a slideshow.

I personally think that it is a very disturbing thing. Maybe because of that specific video on selfie.com. It made me want to close the site right away. Maybe not a problem for such a simple login page but a video playing in the background makes it difficult to focus and read the text. So, I would be careful using this "shiny" thing.

Yeah, it's a growing trend right now. Not very hard to do but I'm pretty skeptical of its effectiveness honestly.

    It can be pretty distracting.

EpicSqueeze plugin allows you to set a Youtube video as background, if that helps.

fyi iphones currently do not support video backgrounds period... wish they did - looping a small 2-4 second video could be very effective if done properly similar to our hot spot feature when used with an animated gif

Sorry, I am too busy helping people to think of a cool signature!
