Well, if it's a comment on a blog, the hope is that the comments are unmoderated and they'll get a backlink... for what that's worth these days, which is not much.

Ok. Got that one. But in this particular one (see >3rd message in this thread) there is no url pointing anywhere in the text , like "look here", or a signature.
However, there is a link in the author profile. But if someone posts a comment like that ,assuming that it doesn't get moderated and that the nofollow tag is NOT setup on the blog, will this still create a backlink for that spammer??

The purpose of garble included in email spam is an attempt to fool the spam filters. If you received it, then it worked!

Yes, agree. It got through the filters. But I don't see any url going back from that message. So again, what's the point??

Sometimes it is to test the validity of your email address. If it doesn't bounce back to them, it's a valid email address that they can then sell to someone or send other spam to.

Gmail does a pretty good job of filtering out spam.

My Gmail address catches about ten a day, often from the same senders sending the same crap over and over again, that are never opened.

Of those that get through to Outlook, its "Block Sender" feature funnels about half of them directly to my Junk Mail folder, where, again, they are deleted unopened.

I suppose the spammers reckon it's not worth the effort to scrub their lists, or maybe they're just too stupid to see the futility of their efforts to make any profit from me.

On a slow day, I occasionally entertain myself by responding to "Bank Managers" and such who want to share a hidden cache of cash with me. Eventually, they lose interest when I reveal that I live under a bridge in Secaucus, NJ, access the Internet from the local Wimpy's, and have no bank accounts or credit cards.

Wow, only 10 a day. You are lucky. I get thousands of spams every week. Of course I have a lot of domains and my email address is all over the place for customer service. Some get caught by mcafee, some by outlook, but still have about 50 a day to weed thru and delete from my inbox.

Or, to put it in a more serious way and get this back on the right track..
If I get a message like : "I think your site could need some traffic, so look at Igetyouloadsoftraffic.com (hope this one doesn't exist), I can imagine that SOME people might have a look. But with a text like the previous one, I cannot imagine that ANYONE will take ANY action on that.

So I guess my more serious question is : What drives a spammer? What is his objective? Just annoying people or tying to make a sale? Just trying to understand why people would ever mail these kind of things?????

    Thx
