Hi all!

I'm toying with the idea of writing and possibly releasing some software that might be useful to Warriors. At least, it might be useful to me, and I'm assuming it might be useful to others! As you can see, this is at a VERY early stage, and may never progress further, but it occurs to me to wonder what operating systems / platforms are most popular among Warriors, and whether it would be worth the extra effort to support multiple platforms.

So, do you you use Windows (if so, which version?), Linux, Mac OS X? On desktops? Laptops?

I'm guessing most of us use smartphones and tablets - are they Android? iOS? Windows phone / Windows RT / or full blown Windows 8 on tablets etc?

I use both Linux and Windows (XP) on my laptop and Desktop respectively, and Android on my phone (haven't bothered with a tablet yet, but when I do it will probably be Android too) so cross platform has some appeal, but might not be worth it if most people are on (for example) Windows.

Thanks for your input!

I'm guessing most people still work on windows based systems with Macbooks thrown in there.

I made the move from Windows to Apple when Windows 8 was released - I haven't looked back and will never return now...

You too, huh? Same reason I switched to OS/X. Haven't regretted it either.

I'm still running Windows XP on both my desktop and laptop. I tried Windows Vista but went back to XP. I don't have a smartphone or a tablet, but if I did, I'd probably run Linux.

I think it's epic with some customizations but it seems I am the only person in the world who thinks like that

If you are serious you need to do proper market research.
You can't base your decision on the replies you may get here, you simply won't get enough results to form an accurate opinion.

I'm sure there are tons of results on Google from companies that have actually done the research for you......

Absolutely I need to do proper research. Right now, I'm at a VERY early stage of wondering whether it's even worth doing that - nebulous ideas, just looking for a quick straw poll to give me a very crude feel for the situation.

Interestingly, though, the number of non-windows users (from an admittedly microscopic sample) supports my initial idea that, for my own benefit, I might want a cross-platform solution.

Thanks to everyone who took the time to answer - it's all food for though!

I would say it depends on the type of software you're developing, and if it's going to be a free software or not.

I don't know whether it would be free or not yet - again, that's something I need to think about in depth. It might be that I could monetize free software though ads, particularly if I went the Android route rather than desktop software. Or maybe as a free incentive for something else. On the other hand, a straight fee might work just as well, if not better. I'm thinking about it...

    Windows 8 on my laptop!!!

I notice some replies, Warriors are still using Windows XP, not a good move as Microsoft is due to stop all support for Windows XP users.

My computers have both Windows 7 and LinuxMint.

Windows is for most common purposes, but I switch to LinuxMint for doing video work. My webcams are much, much faster in LinuxMint, plus nearly every function of video editing goes faster.

I've debated going purely to Linux, but still find those few odd items that send me back to Windows, like Market Samurai, CyberGhostVPN, and for doing screenshot videos that actually look like what other people expect.

My tablets all run Android, but I suspect before the year is out I'll be giving a Mac a try and an iPad.

Do you find that you run some software on both Windows and Linux? For eg, I use Geany editor, with a few small Lua scripts that I've written to automate some things that I do A LOT. I settled on Geany because it's both scriptable and cross platform - I didn't want to have to manage two sets of scripts, one for my Linux machine, and one on Windows.
