Women Internet Marketers

I have a question that I would like an honest answer to  It seems as though the majority of internet marketers are men. I have seen posts on this forum that claim that a lot of IMs use a pen name. My question is would a male pen name help me be more successful or should I just stick with my real name? Please no sexist comments or debates. Really just looking for honest answers. Thanks!

It's your experience, knowledge, and the quality of what you offer that leads you to success . . . not your name, pen name, or gender.

    Hey there

Well, it's a yes and no answer I'm afraid. I was in the weight loss market for a while, and was posing as a woman as it made sense that women relate better to other women.

Here's the problem with that though, as I'm not really a woman, I'm guessing to some degree how a woman really feels. Secondly, I wasn't genuinely passionate about the topic and was essentially doing it for the purpose of making money. This in my opinion is a big mistake.

Personally, as you are female (well, I'm guessing you are from your question), why not pick a market which is female based? Now, you don't have to do that, but to me it makes sense to speak to people in a language they understand.

While Pen names are used by many marketers, it is still pretending. Nowadays with social media the way it is, it is hard to hide behind a PC. What happens if you build up a great following and then they realise you are not who you said you were????

Well, that's my take, and bear in mind you will get different opinions here. The true answer is to do what you feel is 'right'.

    Good luck

In my opinion I think you should not use a pen name.

I think you should make who you are your own USP (Unique Selling Point) - the thing that distinguishes you from everyone else.

People buy from people they trust.

There is also a real danger that if you become successful and it turns out you were posing as someone else it could seriously damage your credibility and your business.

There are male and female authorities in lots of different niches. In fact being a woman who is an authority in a traditionally 'male' field could be an advantage not a disadvantage.

There are plenty of successful women on this forum who don't pretend to be men. Of course, I can't tell you how many there are who are pretending to be men, or men pretending to be women for that matter.

WF is a very closed society. I don't think individuals mean it to be that way. It just takes time to make friends. I am a SENIOR female, double jeopardy. Everyone's goal is to be successful. People will help, regardless of age or sex, if you are serious. Contribute to the forum and soon you won't feel like an outsider.

If you are selling your own experiences as an internet marketer, such as "How to be successful with internet marketing. Here's how I did it!", then stay with your own true identity as you will need proof/testimonials of real customers to establish your credibility with your customers.

If you are selling niche related products, such as ones related to a man's needs (bodybuilding for men; male pattern baldness; male midlife issues); then it would make sense if you chose to take on a man's pen name for your sales copy.

    Hi!

I am used to hear that men are everywhere in lead but it doesn't mean women should leave it. In most cases people specially men attracted toward women so position of women are there to benefit the business. But this is something different, here the person regardless of his/her sex can be successful until they go state to the point. In simple word if you have good knowledge then you be successful.

Most of the people use penname to hide their identity and women are less because i think they are in those pen name !

SHOW ME THE MONEY! That's what people are interested in, and it doesn't matter if you are male, female or a monkey who coaches by sign language from that point of proof forward. With non-mmo niches it's the same...proof and following through (tasks, promises, support, et al.) wins the game.

Honest to god and there have been lots of case studies that show using a female persona or pen name is a better strategy. Why? Maybe because a lot of people searching the net are male and a female stands out to them. What niche are you in? Possibly I could see gender issues?

From my experience, there are plenty of successful women who have businesses online, yet the vast majority of them (according to Entrepreneur magazine) aren't in the MMO niche, so you never really hear about them in forums like these.

You can find a lot of these success stories in magazines likes Entrepreneur and periodicals that target the female demographic.

True, most of the MMO marketers are men, but that's such a TINY segment of the online world; really, it's just a drop in the bucket.

When I think of television commercials I see lots of women being the protagonist ... Perhaps because a female can sell trust with believability better than a male figure.

Men are warriors we don't even trust eachother - lol
A female is a mother, a wife, a sister, a grandmother - women can sell trust and caring a lot easier than us men.

If you are a woman you have a HUGE advantage.

I have seen it happen again and again and again:

Nice girl or woman starts internet marketing and... bang a bunch of guys
    immediately jump in and help.

    Result: immediate success.

Only prerequisite: must have nice picture or avatar.

One of the best marketers and SEO specialist I know is a woman. She could easily teach a thing or two to anyone, anytime, anyplace and I am ready to put money down on that. I have never seen her back away from a challenge nor come out of it otherwise than victorious. So, it's all in the cases you know that help you make an impression on the whole matter.

I'm a female and I have always felt that men gravitate towards other men. So on a webmaster forum I think it's best to have a male persona.

Be yourself - if you can''t then you immediately raise alarm bells. Besides men and women sound different - if you create a video or audio what will you do?

Because I've been around for a long time, run seminars and networking events I know a lot of Internet marketers - both men and women. In my experience, men outnumber women by about 4 to 1 in absolute numbers.

However, there seem to be more successful women as a percentage of all women marketers than there are successful men as a percentage of all male marketers.

It seems that fewer women are attracted to this business, but those who are attracted to it are more likely to be focused and more likely to be ultimately successful.

To answer what I think the OP was asking: I personally don't care who you are or what gender, colour, religion or creed you may be. All that matters online are the quality of your products and the way you behave.

There are plenty of men who like to adopt alpha-male traits, have produced shoddy products and treat their customers like dirt, but I have not found too many women who do the same. Perhaps that's why they seem to be more likely to be successful as a group even though there are still fewer of them.

I'm female, that really is my photo, but I use a pen name. I'm not Katie Rich, which is an just a name that I chose many years ago, when I was told it was best not to reveal too much personal info online.

Things have changed and it is much more acceptable to just be yourself.

As a male often marketing in specialized gender-based niches (ie within medical, education, organizations, etc), I frequently use female pen names as a marketing strategy. There are huge competitive advantages when your name appears to "fit in" with the majority of your target market.

However, there is indeed a sordid vulnerability downside for females, and security precautions need to be in place against predators as well as the time-wasting annoyances of getting "hit on". Turning the tables does change ones' perspective.
