Help picking a domain name - please!

I'm wondering if people generally pick a different domain name for each aspect or product in a particular niche. For example if you are in the relationship niche, would you have a totally different domain name for : getting a girl, get your ex back, catch a cheater, stop a divorce, etc. Or would you pick one general name say: relationshipadvice.com. And then use addons like: getyourexback.relationshipadvice.com? How would the search engine traffic be?

I'm wondering about people's experience with this. Any advice is appreciated.

  • I think picking a general name is better since you are going into the general relationship niche and not some of it subniches.

I see a lot of people selling sites on Sitepoint that hone the relationship niche down to just the very parts you described rather than the general "relationship" niche. I think if you are going to concentrate on a specific product, such as a product to catch cheating spouses, it would be better to use a specific niche. Personally, I would build a blog for each of those categories on it's own domain.

  • Diane,

I think that it depends on what you are trying to do. If you are just going to create a product that has vast appeal then a general domain name might do. But if you want to really get down into the niches I would recommend a keyword specific domain for each new product.

For example if you have a dating product you could branch out into all sorts of groups. datingtipsforthebusynurse, datingtipsforthebusysalesman, ect...

same thing for other topics _____forbulldogsowners, _______forhounddogowners, ect.

I build niche sites so I always go for the tight keyword rich domain.

    Hope this helps.

    • Thanks for your replies. I would be branching out into different products. I have seen the domains that have addons, so I wondered... still a variety of opinions. Any more
  • I have used general domain names and then used sub-domains ( based on keyword research) for the sub niches. That has worked pretty well for me.
