Extreme Newbie Starting Out

Hi everyone. I'm Amy and I'm an academic.....musicologist to be specific. I am currently only employed as an adjunct professor, which means I have my summers off unpaid. So, I decided to devote this summer to learning how make money from home on the internet, something that I was hoping I could continue doing in conjunction with my teaching during the academic year when it resumes in September. Needless to say at this point I know almost nothing about internet marketing.

Here's where I am. Obviously in my searching I found this forum and joined. For the last two weeks I've been busy deciding which WSOs to purchase to get me started on my new journey. I bought Jeremy Kelsall's IM Bootcamp, which I intend to begin this week. I also purchased the Newbie Workbook by Bryan Zimmerman, which I've started on. And I bought BlogInferno that i was intending to dig into a bit later, but maybe sooner, since it has become apparent today that learning about blogging and/or setting up a website is really important. On an impluse buy I also purchased Jeremy Kelsall's Easybankmethod because people posted fantastic immediate results, and I could really use some cash now while I am devoting my time and energy in learning how to build up IM businesses.

I've been looking into all this stuff today and I have about a million newbie questions to ask already. They are about website hosting, autoresponders, wordpress, clickbank, CPAs etc. Should I just start posting my questions here in separate posts? There doesn't seem to be a place to post what are probably basic, obvious questions to the experienced.

Although I feel overwhelmed right now I am not so easily deterred. I'm determined to get my head wrapped around all of these things!

Any help is greatly appreciated!

    Welcome Amy!

Shouldn't you consult the courses you purchased for those answers?

We're more than happy to help but...

...I'm getting the feeling that you're not going to follow the step by step directions of the courses.

    Hope This Helps!!

    Hi Amy

Welcome to the Forum and good luck with your new venture, post any questions on here and I am sure someone will answer them.

Also take the time to search for some freebies, if you are going to build your own blog go to youtube and search for "blogging tutorial" you will find some great tutorials by Chris Abraham's

You should be able to find a lot of answers to your questions in the ebooks you bought.

Read them over completely before you start to implement them. Then once you do that, start, but read the book again as you go along, thats what I do.

    Good luck!

When starting with IM its EASY to be overwhelmed, there is just so much information out there....so its really is a god idea to go step by step. I have been trying my hands at IM for 3 years, I have learned a lot, but there is still so much to learn. You really got to take it one step at a time, but those baby steps add up quickly.

      Hi amy!

I would like to inform you to stop buying how to make money books. Simply put if you have read either of them yet. You would have noticed that they are almost exactly the same. I am not saying you where wrong for buying one or maybe 2 of them. However if you would have dug a little deeper. I have 6 books I could give you for free. All six of these books I also received for free when I started. With these books they simply get straight to the point. I also have another I sell for 19 I can give you for free. It talks all about wordpress if you would like please let me know by pming me.

Let me give you a few pointers. First thing you need to start focusing on is finding a host to run your site. Having your own site is going to be the key. For this I recommend using dreamhost use the promo code hubpages and you will receive 40 off for a year of service. With dream host they have set up some one click installs for you one of which is wordpress. Before you can get started with starting your site after you have purchased your host. You need to pick a domain name close to what you are going to be talking about on your site or blog. Now since you have a background on music i would suggest using this as your starter.

Now with wordpress to get you started there are thousands of themes you can choose from. If you are trying to find one for music do a simple google search with this as your keyword music wordpress theme. You should get well over 1000 for just that. Now make a post to your new blog after you have the theme you want. For the next 2 days do as follows. Find other blogs similar to your new wordpress blog. If it says to add your url when you make a comment add your url there and make a small but sweet comment about the blog you are at. I normally use something like great post keep up the good work or something similar.

Then if there are some forums close to your blog or website. Go there and register make sure you add your url in the sig file. make a few comments there I would say 10-20 in one day should be good. Then go to places like eza and hubpages. Write a few articles talking about your ideas relating to your blog or website. Now we should be on the third day. Go back to your blog and make a new post. Then follow the same process over again. After you have made 3 post to your blog go to google and create an account if you do not already have one. Apply for adsense also go to clickbank and create an account there as well. Continue with your inital start up process. By the time your adsense gets approved you should be getting a minimum of 100 visitors a day to your site or blog. Now it is time to start cashing in ones adsense is approved.

The rest is up to you. For more information go to my blog in my sig file I tried to go into a little detail there on how to make money through a blog there. Hope that helps amy and good luck.

Wow, thanks for all the advice so fast! I'm so happy for the support here. I would love to thank you all personally, but I don't even have enough posts here yet to send thank yous or send PMs.

I can understand TLTheLiberator's concern that I am not going through the things I bought systematically. That IS definitely my plan. It's just that I have had a lot of questions about the things I have started to systematically read today. Maybe they will all be answered if I just keep reading....but I fear that my questions are even too basic for the introductory material.

What I had hoped to do was start with Jeremy Kelsall's Easybankmethod first because other people were having really good results with it, and I was hoping to set that up and make some money while I spend my time systematically going through all the others. But, it is not set up for such a neophyte like me, and doesn't explain really basic things. So, maybe I will just have to wait to use that method until I go through the boot camp. It's just that I am VERY broke and was hoping for some fast income while I spent some serious time immersing myself in boot camp. If anyone has any ideas how I might do that.. if there are any... they would be greatly appreciated.

Today I did also start on day one of bryan Zimmerman's 30 day newbie lessons....and while I do have faith that it will be very helpful, it doesn't explain the extreme basics ..... I'm not faulting him at all....how was he to know I am so clueless I don't know what clikbank is? Or what squidoo does, etc.
I wonder if anyone knows if there is a really basic IM dictionary out there? Or is wikipedia reliable for this stuff (certianly for classical music it is NOT!)?
I have not delved into the IM bootcamp yet, but in retrospect, I'm hoping it may give me answers to the very basic questions I have.... If not, does anyone know of a source for real beginners ... someone who needed a good long while to figure out today that wordpress was not a website hosting site, but something that will help with the appearance of that site?

In any event, I will definitely take Peter's advice, and stop buying WSOs for the moment, until I have completely immersed myself in the things I have already purchased.

        Thanks everyone!

(And Peter, if you are reading this, yes, I am interested in your 6 free books and especially the other that talks about wordpress. If not, I will just PM you later when I have enough posts under my belt to do so! I greatly appreciate your detailed advice, and will certainly check out your blog.)

What basics are you having problems with?

Finding a group of people to market to? ( serve )

Finding products for the people of the niche?

          So-called technical stuff like...

Slapping up a webpage(s) of some sort?

Putting money-making links on the page?

Amy, once you conquer the so-called technical stuff the sky's the limit.

The rest is simply research for niches and products and then taking action to generate visitors to your offers.

( either you pay for them or you do some work to generate them )

So what, you didn't know what clickbank is, but you do know now right?

Making money with an internet based business is simple a matter of time as long as you have...

          - good teaching materials ( step by step for a particular online business model etc. )
          - common sense
          - a decent work ethic

Actually Amy, you're quite lucky to be a newbie in these days and times...

This thread has helped many newbies focus.

            Amy,

If I were you, and your just starting, I would first dig into the bootcamp and Bryans workbook. That will give you a feel for how everything kind of flows...

The other thing that I would recommend, is to stop buying stuff

I appreciate that 2 of the things that you bought were mine, but getting too much information too fast will be a detriment to your success. So, try to digest things one at a time.

With the bootcamp, you have access to me through email as well as our help desk and we are truly there to make sure you understand everything and make money so, make sure you take advatage of it.

            Jeremy

Welcome to the forum Amy! You are more likely experiencing information overload that is why you are asking lots of questions right now. But that is simply normal for a starter. Google is a pool of golden information. There are a couple of stuffs so technical but there are always an answer somewhere.

    Glad to have you here!

    Hello Amy,

Please stop buying more products, especially any that say this is an easy process. Take it a step at a time. If there is a topic, look it up on the search engines or here in the WF. Get the reviews first. Please do not allow yourself to be lured in by unrealistic promises. I know how easy it is to get overwhelmed. Take it step by step, and topic by topic, and empower yourself with knowledge. It is a lot to take in, but having the ability to show others the value in doing business with you cannot be measured.

Amy, try to go through the lessons sequentially, and just do what you can even if it seems daunting. Much of IM can only be learned by doing, and staring at an ebook trying to figure things out (without actually doing them) is a really futile and frustrating endeavor! Many times you can read about something and even think you know how to do it, but then when you attempt to actually do it you discover many new things that you'd only have learned by implementing it!

Let me draw an analogy for you in terms of music - while you can study music theory all day long and learn how to compose and transpose notes, you really won't know whether all this will actually sound right until you actually play the notes on a piano, would you? IM is very similar, without actually implementing what you read about you won't actually be learning much!
