Making Money as a Developer
I worked as a SEO a few years back. Namely doing link building software and things that are not looked down well upon in the SEO community. I built private tools for people who were doing IM, I was not doing it myself. I moved out of that and got a "real" job in business software. However, I miss being able to work for myself, so I've spent some time trying to get everything together that I feel I'll need to do some large scale IM.
I learned a lot from my current job, though. Namely that having a system to look over everything, with reporting capiabilities, and good tracking of time is key to finding what is successful and what is failing.
I've set up a system with everything I think I will need, complete with a free-lance portal where I can post jobs and outsource a lot of the work that I remember being involved.
The goal here being pay someone to write content and do link building, and just work on the code and development stuff. Then roll up all of the analytics and statistics from each site into a management portal. I do not have the time to write content consistantly.
However, I have this neat system, but now I've come to the point that I need to invest some money. I'm a little scared to do it. Where do I get started with this? What are some good ways to identify a market that will work? How much money should I invest in content/seo before I drop that idea and move on? At what point do you see returns on investment? Weeks/months/years? Are development skills going to serve me well in this field or is it going to be mostly just marketing?
Just looking for advice and maybe to get to know a few people here who are developers, whats your story?
