I am sure we all will find out. Will be interesting to see how the moderation will change over the next few months. New moderators on staff, wonder if Paul well stay on or if he will become a paid employee or what? I have no clue what he would do if he wasn't a moderator here any longer, can't see that happening.

Really curious how the WSO's will continue. They are not going to disappear as they are a large part of why Freelancer is interested in WF, the revenue.

Going to be really interesting, biggest news in the industry in a very long time.

WSO's changing for the better, meaning higher quality, would be a very nice change.

To a certain extent I think, yes, however it sounds to me like they are looking at it for the cross platform / cross promotion opportunity.

With revenue in comparison WF does well but doesn't hold a candle to Freelancer's bank account.

Did you see the purchase price? 3.2 Million. While that's a nice looking number (which I honestly thought would be much higher for a WF buyout) it's basically pocket change for a platform like Freelancer with over 10 million users.

Of course profit is in mind and at the forefront, but I truly don't think their plan relies on WFs current revenue generation systems particularly since we just saw them drop the price on the two biggest sources of income for the forum.

Yes, it will be made up in volume, but I'm betting that integrating Freelancer a bit into WF with cross promotion and (potentially) user base sharing is the ultimate goal here.

Will be interesting to see what happens. We are all slightly nervous that our beloved WF goes through a drastic change, but I think we are all excited as well :-)

I was kind of surprised too. If I'd known that 3.2 was the sweet spot, I might have considered buying it. :/

Well this is what happens when I take time away from the forum. :p

Congrats to both Allen and Freelancer.

I don't think most people understand the dedication it takes to run a site and the software behind it when you get this big.

You either have to put a lot of resources into the site to make sure you keep up with demand or sell it to someone who already has the resources and the know how.

It's a good lesson to people here if you really take a look at it. We can be trapped in our own success. Not a bad problem but still something to think about.

It's not going to be the same for sure.

Did you notice the other purchase made this year by Freelancer? Fantero.

I don't think it is just a cross promotion thing but a larger business model. Freelancer is basically taking over the IM industry by combining all the pieces under one roof. Even though it is a separate company, you are right there will be user base sharing but they are going to be doing more than just that. So much I think that many of these current WSO's are going to stop being offered because there will be better quality available directly from Freelancer other properties.

Right now looking after the community is the #1 most important thing for us at Freelancer.com.

We want to make sure any changes we make improve the community as a whole and help you guys achieve what you're trying to achieve.

I've been a member of Warrior for years and have gained so much value so I'll be making sure the community remains awesome and that all of you guys have a voice.

Strange how your all ready talking about how your going to 'improve' the #1 IM community in the world. Going to make it better than #1 eh. Going to do it like you did when you bought vWorker / RAC? Which is basically take a great service and replace it with your own poor quality one.

Sure you have been a very inactive WF member for a couple years. Sorry I'm not impressed.

Honestly the WF has less appeal for me just knowing that freelancer.com owns it now. But I will wait a few months to make a final judgement.

I'm going to have to disagree with you to an extent. Just because something is #1, does not mean it can't be improved. You don't see Usain Bolt giving up because he is #1, now do we? I can't comment on the second part of your input.

Also - how do you know he has been 'inactive'? He could very well have visited on a daily basis, just choosing not to post regularly. The fact is, he has been a member for many years, and given the recent events, it's clear that the forums have enhanced his knowledge for online businesses.

I guess we'll have to wait and see.

I'll second that. Give it a chance, it's been one day. lol

I've been here for years and though I don't post often since the changeover to the newer forum... I'm still here like many other people. It's a shame that all those old threads were lost, but it is what it is.

My bet is the forum will only improve as they'll be more people involved with management and growing it.

So you're saying there's absolutely nothing about WF that can be improved? It's perfect the way it is?

If anything, being #1 means there must be constant improvements, or WF will quickly be outdone by someone else.

Thank you Allen for creating the best IM forum on the planet!...

Nothing lasts forever and things will change but Freelancer is a great company... I've been hiring outsourcers from them for 5 or 6 years now and have only had minor difficulties with them.

That was all in regards to them holding up my outsources pay... until Freelancer verified the transactions with me over the phone as a security measure.

On most transactions there's no problem but whenever I pay one of my outsourcers over $1,000 Freelancer will not transfer the money to them until they phone me (which is a good thing) and the first time this happened I was travelling up in the Northern Territories of Australia where there was no cell phone reception...

The second time it happened their customer service said it was to late at night to ring me so they decided to wait until the next day to phone verify the transaction with me and that caused some friction between me and my outsourcer because she was counting on receiving her pay on time and it took several days to sort things out...

Their response to my support questions has at times been a little slow but they have responded to every one so in my book they are A OK!

I expect more positive changes than negative with the new ownership and would not be surprised if Freelancer keeps the present mods and hires Allen as a consultant to keep the forum going in a positive direction!

Congratulates to Allen! And Congratulations to Freelancer as they made a wise investment here!

Posted this in the announcement in the news section, and thought it might be appropriate to post here as well...

I didn't want to comment until I actually had something to base comments on. Just spent some time on the phone with Alaister, and was suitably impressed.

            My thoughts on this:

First, Freelancer has the technical staff and experience to scale up and optimize hardware in ways that could reduce or eliminate a lot of the server and database issues that have caused intermittent access problems for a while. That is, by itself, a huge potential benefit.

His experience in dealing with buyers and sellers through Freelancer translates directly to a lot of the challenges of setting policy and moderating in marketplaces like the for sale sections of this forum. It would be very hard to overstate the value of that.

For the folks who were worried about heavy-handed changes... I don't see that. At all. Despite the occasional mentions of his relatively low post count, he "gets" the culture and standards here.

Some things will almost certainly change, and that's appropriate. New owners can make new rules, after all. I don't see anything in the works, though, that's anything but good for the members.

A couple of reminders... The idea of a ratings system for WSOs still faces the same hard problem it always has: Limiting access to only those people who've actually bought the products they're rating. The forum is still not a party to those transactions, so there is currently no way to verify who bought what product.

Without that capability, any ratings system could be too easily gamed.

Also, the notion that the price of listing a WSO has any impact on quality of offerings is not, and never has been, accurate. That's been discussed to death for as long as the forum has charged for WSO listings, and it's been pretty well demonstrated that it's not a factor.

Some things will probably change, and a lot won't. Be patient with both possibilities.

    I'm personally very excited...

Sure we've all been screwed over by change over the years... (I'm sure a few people will get VERY nervous over this)...

    But with change comes opportunity.

And if you're in the marketing world... This is a MASSIVE change.

The next few months will be interesting. I bet there's ample opportunity ahead.

I doubt they want to jeopardize their main business because of blatant law violations.

    ex:
Bogus Business Opportunities | BCP Business Center
    The earnings claim statement

What if the seller makes a claim about how much money a person can earn? Under the Rule, they have to give you a separate document that says in big type across the top: EARNINGS CLAIM STATEMENT REQUIRED BY LAW.

    This document has to include:

    the name of the person making the claim and the date;
    the specifics of the claim;
    the start and end date those earnings were achieved;
    the number and percentage of people who got those results or better;
any information about those people that may differ from you – for example, the part of the country where they live; and
a statement that you can get written proof of the seller's earning claims if you ask for it.
Since the Rule gives you the right to see written proof for the seller's earnings claims, savvy buyers exercise that right and study those materials carefully. Compare that information to what the seller has told you about how much money people make. If the dollar amounts don't line up, your best bet is to walk away. Like the disclosure document, the earnings claim statement has to be in the same language that the seller used to communicate with you.
That quoted section alone eliminates about 98% of the WSO's if enforced. I'm not saying it's a bad thing

Argree. Seems indeed low to me for a site that exists 17 years, is in the top of Alexa and has 730.000 members. On the other hand, if the owner has been living of the site for all these years, then it's still a nice exit bonus

I hope WSO's get screened now, I think if they were screened before being allowed to be published, profits for sellers would go way up. Profits would maybe go down for the warrioroforum, but that's not an issue now that we are owned by freelancer.
    {{ DiscussionBoard.errors[9106852].message }}

      Luke,

The problem with screening offers before letting them go live is the same as it has always been: The people who have the expertise in all those areas are not going to spend their time reviewing random offers.

Then there's the problem that doing it the way you suggest would amount to the forum endorsing any approved offers. No sensible person is going to do that. Especially when there are so many areas in which even the experts disagree on what is or is not a good practice.

Suppose they approve an offer that's SEO-related and it's believed later that Google frowned on the practice the offer suggested? Is the forum's owner ready to be sued for the damage done (or perceived to have been done) by using that technique?

This suggestion comes up quite often, and it sounds great. Right up until you look at what would be required to make it happen in the real world.

        Paul
I agree, it just wouldn't work. Wouldn't the "reviewer" also need to actually implement the strategies? What if it's a long term strategy, does the reveiwer keep at it for 3-4-5 months or more?

However, there may be some ways to reduce some of the risk on both sides. Maybe Freelancer could implement their escrow service for some higher priced Warrior products and services?

Instead of approving products, is there a way to track if refund requests are honored?

Not to take anything away from Warrior+ or JVZoo, but could the new ownership set up their own affiliate platform for WSOs? If so, this could be used to check the refund record for both buyers and sellers, while adding a new revenue stream to the WF.

If a seller offers a moneyback guarantee, and has a verifiable record of honoring it, it would provide even more security than approving products and services could provide.

          Kurt,

Why am I not surprised that you've come up with original ideas that could actually work?

Tracking refunds through the forum isn't practical, for the same reason as the rating system. We do pretty well with nuking sellers who don't honor those policies now.

The escrow thing for higher-priced products might work, but they'd have to become parties to the transactions. Not sure if that's within their plans or not. Can't/won't comment on how they see themselves fitting into that part of the process. Still, a practical suggestion that could actually work.

I should note here that the folks at W+ and JVZoo are pretty serious about enforcing refund issues. They have always been very responsive to any documented issues we've brought to their attention.

Overdue shout out to Mike Lantz and Bryan Zimmerman for that, by the way.

I'm not sure if they want to implement the escrow either. I just brought it up because they use it at Freelancer and could be of value here.

And if they don't want to create their own affiliate platform, maybe the guys at Warrior+ and JVZoo could add some type of "refund score" for sellers? Maybe something like average time from refund request through their system to the refund being processed, with no open cases more than 24-48 hours old?

It could be as simple as adding a pinned thread explaining that buyers should use Warrior+ and/or JVZOO to request refunds and not do it through Paypal?

As we know, Paypal generally doesn't honor refunds for digital products, but Warrior+ and JVZOO will do much more to process the refund.

Responded in the official announcement thread:

As in all changes, I'll wait to see.

              Webmaster-talk.com redirects to freelancer.com
After Scriptlance.com was sold to freelancer.com, a seller requested full payment for a programming job I had, took the money, was allowed to withdraw it and never gave me anything. Now Scriptlance.com also just redirects to freelancer.com.

Warriors for Hire. A really valuable asset to the Warrior Forum. Integrated with Freelancer, not as much. I've built relationships with Warriors and feel confident hiring a lot of them. It has also been a profitable section for me to advertise.

Will it become another Flippa that "commissions" you to death?

I love WF pretty much as it is. It's obviously very successful at what it does. I'm always of the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" type of mindset.

              But anyway ... congrats Allen.

The one thing I am worried about is that the forum might adapt an E-lance type model where they hit up freelancers for money as well as the people hiring help. I also am very fond of being able to do a job for someone who advertises on the forum and get paid as soon as they are satisfied without waiting for a 3rd party. Note the above discussion about funds being held until they verified by phone.

Will Allen still be involved in some way or is he starting a new venture or retiring?

I agree with your premise, however I believe there has to be a way to work around liability for (perceived)approval.

For example Clickbank reviews sellers prior to taking them on as publishers. And I believe the first offer by a seller goes through closer scrutiny than subsequent offers.

Allen, I appreciate what you have created here. It has helped me personally to become a better and more informed Internet marketer.

To those commenting on the announced sales price . . .

You have no idea what's on Allen's mind and you don't know what his plans are for the future. He is a seasoned business owner and pulled the trigger when he did for his own reasons. I'm sure the timing was right in his mind and that this wasn't a distressed sale or done on a whim in any way.

I, for one, welcome the idea that Allen will be a more active poster. His ideas and wealth of experience are both refreshing and based on solid marketing principles. I still profit from some of the ideas in his little "Tycoon" book after all these years.

Anyway, the very best to you Allen.

    Allen,

    Congrats on the sale.

The Warrior Forum is itself a case-study in the great potential and possibilities of Internet marketing.

    Observe a need(s).
Find ways to assist with the need(s).
    Maintain honesty and integrity.
Be prepared to adapt to changes in the online world.
Stay a step ahead of the competition.
    Provide value and over-deliver.

Thanks for creating and maintaining a platform that has no doubt changed and improved the lives of countless individuals. This forum has consistently provided the inspiration, tools, and knowledge for many of us to provide for our families in a very non-traditional way.

Wishing you a very successful future, Janice

I've only been a member here for less than a year, so I'm not as ingrained into the WF community like a lot of long-time members. But I'm going to stay optimistic about this. Freelancer certainly has more resources to put into the WF, extending the possibilities of what can be done here.

Wow this is really surprising to me honestly... i couldnt believe it at first. But a big congratulations for you Allen and thank you for creating such an awesome place. I met so many great people here its ridiculous.

I really hope that the WarriorForum will remain an "independent" website and the new owners wont bring DRAMATIC changes to this awesome community (especially the wso section, warriors for hire and others) but instead leave it "as is".

To the new owners please read what Paul wrote here, those are all important and crucial points.

      Good luck for everything Allen.

Being a member since 1998 I can say it's been amazing to watch the forum grow from humble beginnings (Unisol days) to now. Hoping the WF continues to be a valuable resource and thrive for years to come

        Hi Devid,

Yeh Warrior Forum will remain independent to Freelancer.com. We want to make sure we're listening to all of you guys to ensure we're able to make changes that improve your experiences and what you guys are doing.

I've actually spoken to Paul on the phone and we went through a lot of different suggestions and idea. All of mods have and are doing an amazing job moderating this place and their wealth of experience is priceless. I'm making sure we work with all of them and gain from their time here.

I would suggest adding a Case Studies forum because people often post case studies in the main forum which aren't allowed there. It would be a popular section I think as people could follow each and every step of someones progress.

post-scriptlance buyout I never bought from freelance. That's true, I used to hire coders on scriptlance a lot, after it was bought I never hired another one again, because I liked scriptlance (esp. how they did escrow and coder ratings/bids). post-getty buyout of istock i almost never buy from there anymore. post adobe buyout of macromedia, flash was largely dropped. I hope this is a step forward, and there's virtually no changes here. the worst possible thing would be to put a bunch of freelance banners and ads all over the place, change it's look and feel to some corporate webdesign look and other catastrophes. It's great the way it Is. I hope it continues to be relevant and non-corporatized/changed.

Well the only main advice I'd give is, Before making any changes, ASK the Warriors here, via polls/surveys, what they want. Anyone else agree?

anyways congrats again Allen, and good to know you folks are listening to Paul. Let's hope this ends well and not badly. Here's to evolutionary positive changes and contineud success. I don't want to look back in a year and say "I missed the old WF, it was so great and now it's not". what say ye? (ps. under my original nick from when I was here in the mid 2000s, I had over 4,000 posts; left for awhile, came back w/new nick)

Congrats to Allen, you deserve it.

I can see both sides of this being a good and a bad thing, but I see more good coming out of it than anything else.

I would hope that with the changes that we see more people with knowledge to share come here and visit on a regular basis, people who come from freelancer.com who would not normally even know of this site much less have a reason to visit.

Allen, I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for this community. More than once the people here have risen to the occasion and helped my family out when we needed it. I haven't been around much for a very long time but I'm hoping to start coming around more often again and I do hope to see you posting more. Your knowledge and advice have always been nothing short of priceless.

WSO listings will also be $20 now, if i understand things correctly.

How much effect will a $20 decrease have on WSO listing fees? I guess we'll find out.

I don't foresee it having much impact apart from making it a bit more affordable for you guys.

All the WSOs still go through the same approval process.

The new price is like 5 cents a day, and for all that great content and all those freebies, it is a massive bargain.

If you post just one WSO you come out ahead of the old price.

      Before: $37 to join, $40 for a WSO = $77
      Now: $20 to join, $20 for a WSO = $40

You save $37, and $20 more for each WSO you post up. You might want to reconsider.

A $20 dollar annual membership fee to be an advertiser here AND get access to a CRAP LOAD of free WSO's that people just give away inside the War room is one of the BEST offers going anywhere on the planet.

I'm sorry you feel the membership terms don't fit your needs but it sure does for 100's of not 1000's others. = (

That's a decision. Easy enough, eh?

        Cooler1,
I would suggest adding a Case Studies forum because people often post case studies in the main forum which aren't allowed there. It would be a popular section I think as people could follow each and every step of someones progress.
We've been experimenting with allowing those in the SEO section.

The challenge with case studies is the advertising that nearly always goes along with them. I wouldn't mind a little of that, personally, as long as the info was worth it. It gets tricky drawing that line, though, and it's the sort of thing that tends to grow and be abused. People see one, think "I can do that," and post less useful info with more self-promotion.

The arguments that come up when you delete one and leave another are interesting, to put it mildly. Everyone knows this stuff involves judgement calls, but no-one likes to be on the "No" end of one.

I believe case studies are allowed in the War Room, if they aren't too self-promotional. It works better there, because those posts have to be approved prior to being visible.

If I'm wrong about that and they're not allowed there, it might be something to consider.

I've noticed in this thread and others on the subject, that many of the folks complaining about the new $20/year War Room fee are members who have been here for 1-3 years and never bothered joining in all that time. Complaining about the pricing now seems just a wee little bit disingenuous, if you know what I mean.
