What is a 'normal' confirmation pending rate for your email list?list?

I noticed something strange in my email list of subscribers. About 40% remain in the status "Confirmation pending". So it means that they have filled out the opt-in box, got the 'confirm message', but didn't follow up.

This seems rather high to me. I used the standard 'please confirm' message from Aweber, that I receive in 99% of the cases, so I can't imagine that it has anything to do with the content of that message.

I tested and re-tested the whole procedure, and everything seems to work fine.

I mean, what's the point of someone clicking 'Yes I subscribe' and then NOT confirming?

What is your rate for the 'confirmation pending' versus 'confirmed' subscribers?

Thank you

yeah I think people are just lazy or use an email that they dont check... They might sign up to see if they get what you are offering then not confirming.

What i did was take them to a thank you page that asks them to check their email and confirm to receive my complete offer and also check their spam box. That might help a little bit. I also have a lot of sign ups that dont confirm.

i DO send them to a Thank you page. And they cannot get to the freebie, unless they confirm . So what's the point of not confirming?

And I DO explain them on the thank you page how to check their inbox, promotions and other...

The number depends on your traffic source, for example it´s higher with solos then with PPC

I leave confirmation off, I know this is unadvised but I just think that a lot of people just forget about it and whether they confirm or not may not be the best indicator of whether they will turn out to be a dedicated customer or not.

      There you have it

They are all going to the promotional tab thats the reason no one is confirming!

Then you need to be prepared to lose a fair number of subs. My experience has been around 50% average.

Even when people make it to the download page a certain percentage won't download the freebie.

The reasons are many and varied. I personally signup to multiple lists every week. I'm curious, I never confirm, I un-sub almost instantly, I'm not the only one.

I repeat, they DO NOT get to the download page. The exact sequence is:

-They fill out the opt-in form and click.
-They get the Thank you page, asking them check their email, and explaining how to check that with gmail.
-At the same time they receive a mail to confirm their email address (no download link there)

That's where it stops. With my own tests, they come into my inbox. Tried with several gmail adresses. There ARE subscribers from gmail on my list.

" I personally signup to multiple lists every week. I'm curious, I never confirm".

What's the point? In my setup (and most others I saw), when you don't confirm you don't get the freebie. So why go through the hassle of filling out a form?

Just trying to understand the psychology behind this....

Not really. My wording in the 'please confirm' mail is the standard message from Aweber. Nothing special or fancy or customized. I agree, it's not great prose, but that's what I receive when I sign up with the internet marketing gurus. So I don't think that that's the problem.

I have explained in detail on my thank you page how to get me on the whitelist and how to check for the promotions and other tabs on gmail.

All I want to know is , what is YOUR (all the readers) of your "pending confirmation" rate. If it's like mine: 40 or 50% , then I stop looking for an explanation. If everyone else here says : It's about 10-20% for me" , then I have to investigate further what's going on.

      Thank you

    "Please confirm" . . .

It doesn't work, like you want, because it offers
no incentive - especially if you're using Aweber's
    canned message.

You have to think this through -

They come to your site . . .
You interest them in taking a step . . .
    They take it . . .
    They get a "thank you" page . . .

And they're off to the next distraction, likely
forgetting all about you by the time they get
back to their email account - or waking up to
the reality they probably just joined another
list that's going to bombard them with offers.

Instead, and this is fine per Aweber, "Click the
following link for immediate access to INCENTIVE
and confirm your desire to communicate with us."

Tell them on your "thank you" page that you've
sent them a secret link for immediate access - something
you've had to do because there's just so damned
much demand you can't leave it open to everyone.

If I use double opt-in, I only use it with this type
of incentive. You'll see that confirmation rate
    increase dramatically.

You see, the smart way to use double opt-in is
to YOUR advantage - not your email service
    provider, or anyone else.

All the best to you - X

That's good advice!! I'll change my 'please confirm' message and my Thank You page. I'll report back how this works out.
