here's what I've noticed watching forums:

A number of people have a specific question, they come to forums, throw a question then disappear forever.

A number of people due to different reasons stay on forums and don't know where they go or what to do. Reasons: they have lost their money on different affairs and now try to learn, they have no ideas and try to suck some out of forums - I would open a topic for such people to find out why they stay on forums

A number of people answer a wide range of questions to gain traffic to their website.

A number of people have written a number of articles answering common questions in their niche. When you come and ask they point you to their articles and explain your question specific if necessary.

I use forum because I truly like them as an information source.

I like the layout plus for me it's better than a blog.

I can interact with the other members to build relationships so I could learn from them.

    Hi

I love to be able to help others, even though i am not that experienced. But often there are specific questions to which i know the answers.
I am learning a lot here in the forum as well and - of course - i want to spread the word about my website.
I love to interact with people here!

Forums always give a platform for sharing of knowledge.

At the same time, it allows interactions and forming of alliance and joint ventures. Furthermore, this is on the World Wide Web, and that simply means connecting to global audiences.

    Need more reasons???

To learn, and to give back.

If I wasn't a frequent visitor on the forum, then I'd still be grinding out $5 articles.

Knowledge is most definitely at the top of the list. Sometimes you don't even know what you should know - forums make you wiser. Next comes your responsibility to give back and then of course targeted traffic.

I think you've covered my reasons pretty much.

And the order varies from day to day...

Sometimes I go to forums to learn, and while I'm there, and I come across questions where I have something to contribute, I add my 2 cents.

I also want to connect, find out about new products, and maybe even sell one of my own

Oh, and I love the sense of community you get in a forum where you start knowing a lot of people!

Basically, it is to find people like me. Well believe me, you do not get to 10,000 sales by targeting 1,000,000 people that you do not know. In fact, you get 100,000 sales by targeting 100 people who will spread the word once they have bought your product or service.

To help people, to get to know other people, to learn what's going on in the industry, to know what others are talking about.

    Pretty simple really.

I use it for several reasons.

1.) I'm a veteran geek... and before forums there was usenet! Got hooked on sharing info that way but forums took things to the next level.

2.) Love meeting like minded folk!

3.) Love proactively demonstrating that I walk the walk I talk.

      4.) Love building my network!

They're 'way more manageable then Skype groups and FB groups as well.

      My data points.
