Screen Recording Software

Hi everyone,

I am looking for advice on what software to go for to record my screen as I demonstrate things to my students.

I only need it to be quite basic I think.

I plan to record the video and then record my voice over it afterwards. So the final video would be of a screen playback that has commentary whilst I occasionally pause and if possible play in slow motion the video. So I guess needs some basic editing. The video will then be uploaded to a website. I don't need to go any more fancy than that.

I have heard camtasia is good. But it is pretty pricey.

Does anyone know of a cheaper or even free version? I have heard of camstudio but from what I gather this doesn't have any editing software for me to do my commentary over afterwards?

Thanks for your time

    Hi Tommy

Check out Replay Video Capture: Screen Video Recorder - great low budget screen recorder I use all the time for recording my screen

Should work GREAT for what you want to do with it - being that you'll be recording your voice over later!

    Hope this helps

If you're going to be making a lot of these types of tutorials, then I think you should reconsider Camtasia. Yes, it's not cheap, but for good reason.

It's not just a great screen recorder and basic editor, but actually has very powerful video editor functionality yet remains very easy to use.

If it's something you intend on doing a lot of, Camtasia's a great product.

Camtasia studio. It costs, but is cheap and easy.

  • The reason Camtasia is the software most people will hear about when looking for screen recording options, is because it's the one product that does just about everything you need,
    all rolled into one.

They also keep improving and adding features to the product, so you rarely will say, "I wish it did this, or that". In exchange for it having all the bells and whistles, you pay the higher price of course.

Using lower priced and free products may be suitable for some, but will almost always leave you wishing that you had Camtasia or similar. The free products sometimes will leave a watermark on your videos, and or will have some other shortcomings.

Why not download Camstudio from CamStudio - Free Screen Recording Software

Fire it up, mess around with it, try to create a video according to your needs, and see if it does what you wish for. At least you will get some hands on experience with the whole recording editing process, and you will know what exactly it is you are looking for feature wise as you are shopping around.

Note: I own Camtasia however, and have not, or could not recommended anything else.

While I agree Camtasia is an awesome software, I think it might be a little too much for what you need.

Why not just use Screencast-O-Matic - Free online screen recorder for instant screen capture video sharing. for free and then either use iMovie or Windows Movie Maker to record your voiceover on top of the video? No sense paying for the best software when you're not going to use most of the features you're paying for, IMO.

Blueberry flashback has a free trail version and will then offer you standard version with discount after a week or two. Very reasonable and has many features and you can add audio tracks to your video.

    Hope that helps.

I would go with ScreenCast-O-Matic. It allows you to record your screen and voice over with some basic editing on the site. It's far cheaper than camtasia. I still use it from time to time and is very reliable.

Seriously, for the average person creating videos, save your money and download ezvid at The Best Free Video Maker for YouTube » ezvid.com . It's simple to use and does a darn good job. My daughter (who is 8) uses it to create Minecraft videos.

I've tested it and I'm seriously considering using it to make videos from now on.

I'd agree with every vote for screencast-o-matic. Just don't even bother with the free version as there'll be an ad on every video - pay the really cheap annual fee to get the pro version. Works like a charm.

Camtasia is pricey, but worth every cent. I've used the iwisoft recorder too (its free) and some features like watermarking and file size adjustment are cool, but I couldn't voice with it.

Think about Smartpixel, it's an alternative of camtasia which has the screen recording and video editing tool you are looking for, meanwhile, it has playback feature while you are recording.

I prefer My Screen Recorder Pro screencasting software. It creates recordings in standard formats, and the quality of the recording is better than the other products I have tested.

Camtasia would be my first choice for screen recording followed by ActivePresenter ActivePresenter - Record screen, create interactive screencasts, software demo, software simulations, author rapid elearning materials with quizzes, create SCORM-compliant courses - Advanced Screencast & Rapid eLearning Authoring Tool (not an affiliate link).

Doing slow motion may be a problem, however, and may require some specialized video editing software. My favourite is Serif MoviePlus Free Movie Editing Software - MoviePlus Starter Edition from Serif (not an affiliate link either) as this gives you the ability to vary the frame rate of a clip.

I'e always been a big fan of Camtasia. But keep in mind that if you're using a Mac there's good and bad:

Good - Cheaper than the PC version $100 versus $300

Bad - Mac version is not as good as the PC version

I like the Mac version better for editing "live video" from a video recorder but the PC version is better when it comes to recording the screen.
