I have 5,00+ email list, I don't know what to do with it

Hello guys! I'm a fairly new Internet marketer but I have an idea how the Internet works. I've been writing articles since 2009 but I didn't know what they're doing with those that I write until last year or so lol. I've also been offering business/customer service to private clients through oDesk. My main and only income is the Internet and I live pretty comfortably. Now I want to scale that up and I've been reading some affiliate marketing stuff, mostly about building niche/authority sites and organic traffic but paid traffic interest me.

Now one of my client's who's running a paid to click site (like microworkers) is going to close the business. I asked him if I can have his email list (which are members, either micro employers and micro employees). That's around 5,000 members, he said he won't mind if I export it. (He won't need it)

Now my question is, I actually don't know what to do with the list once I have it. I have several domains and hosting (since I'm starting some niche sites, so I can do something with it I guess).

Any suggestions? I don't have an idea how to approach those in the list and what to do with them, sell them something? Build loyalty?

      Hmmm.. yeah I would say it's not profitable because of the low fees/commissions (I think most of the sites like these rely on abandoned accounts to get income) and the high cost of operations (a CSR guy is paid $5-6 per hour, working on 5-6 hours per day, plus a developer who maintains it at roughly $150 a month) but overall it's a very active community with a lot of jobs (like a page, subscribe to YT channel, sign up etc). Micro employers get their job done and go on for more while micro employees earn real money, the only one losing is the business owner.

      He's not really done anything with that list but send registration confirmation emails and the occasional support and announcement emails.

      hey you can build a good relation ships with the list .. by sending some information emails and tips.first introduce yourself in the first mail and than you can try promoting something to them.

    You're going to want to get more than just his permission. To be on the safe side, you'd be wise to get him to tell people what's going to happen with their info before you ever send anything to them, including identifying you by name as the person who'll be taking it over.

    Give them a choice, rather than making it for them.

    Even that may run afoul of data protection laws in some countries. Then there's the question of what the privacy policy was when they joined.

    It would be better to have the guy send emails to them promoting you and let the ones who're interested sign up on their own. That's a much cleaner and less intrusive process, with zero spam questions coming from it.

      I actually didn't think of that. I have to say I am pretty naive with this and don't know the legal repercussions of not getting permission from the people on the list themselves. Yeah, simply jumping in is spammy. Thanks for the advice mate!

    Have him send out a few emails, maybe for a week straight introducing you with a link to a squeeze page where they can subscribe if they want to.

    This way, you're getting only interested people on your list.

    Then, monetize through various different product offerings, affiliate products, etc.

      I believe the people in the list are already "targeted" if that is what you mean by "interested" They're targeted for PTC and even affiliate marketing itself (correct me if I'm wrong), so do you have any idea of what product offerings will work best for them?

      Of course, that will only happen, after I get introduced by the business owner to his members and all privacy issues are covered, just like you guys said

    You need it get a real breakdown of the demographics if your list before you make a move selling to them. There's loads of monetization options, affiliate products, CPA etc etc.

    You need to activate this email list by asking their permission. With permission you will have a pass to send them mails and they will not be surprised to see your emails when you send them some useful information or some offer. Dont try to start with affiliate promotions straight away, try to build some relationship first.

    The list consists of microworkers? Why not try to sell them IM products? Chances are those workers signed up on the microsite in the hopes of making some money off micro jobs. "Make Money" products might be a good idea.

    Personally, I'd be a little leery of a 5,000 subscriber list that somebody is basically willing to just hand over. If it was me, why wouldn't I keep it knowing I can make some extra cash every month? It sounds like a dead list to me.

    My suggestion is to have him send a couple emails regarding a potential transfer to you so that you can start to warm them up to you and know who you are.

    That's better than being handed a list that you begin emailing and having subscribers think, "Wait! Who is this?" Unsubscribe.

    Sounds awesome, but that list needs qualifying. Start slow with it, test open and click rates before you promote a single thing and see what kind of engagement you're getting.

    If you do notice you're getting solid activity, invest in a solid email marketing course. Best investment you'll make with an asset such as a 5000 person email list.

    You can use sendblaster to send emails with your affiliate links for several products/services etc. In this way you will be able to make some extra money.
