what exactly is data management software?

I am setting up free websites for people--just simple wordpress sites--and one prospective client wants data mangement software. I'm not sure exactly what that is, but I imagine it is just a way to keep information about clients organized. Suggestions about which software works good with a wordpress site and what it takes to set it up?

    When you are dealing with clients or prospects and you don't
    know something you need to clarify it.

    You probably don't want to do that because you think you
    should know everything.

    Here is how you get around that.

    Mr Customer, I understand that you want data management,
    and I can do that for you. However, I need more information to set this up
    for you.

    If you could set up the perfect data derangement system
    what would it look like?

    You need to ask questions.

    Other questions that will help you are...
    What data to you want to manage?
    How will you use it?

      Yes, I suppose you are correct, but I was just afraid of coming across as a complete amatuer (which I am) and figured I could just outsource it as long as I knew what it was. I used to run a landscaping business in the states and used the same methods, as I knew nothing about landscaping either. I'd show up, look at the job, ask for some time to formulate an estimate, do a little research, and then pay my workers to do the labor. I never had a job go wrong. Anyhow, I did ask him to show me some sites that were doing what he had in mind so I could be sure of his expectations because he mentioned before that there were many sites I could look at as models.

        The problem is always communication.

        I am 56 years old and have been in the
        computer industry since 1976.

        Words mean different things to people
        based on their experience.

        So when someone says something that
        you are unclear about you can always ask
        if you know how.

    You need to get details of what he wants, you will need a database (obviously) but what will they do with the data, and how do they want it reporting? are they going to use the data to predict trends, use it for mailings, get domgraphics?.

    Its a tricky one that if not done correctley could end up costing you a lot of time getting it to the clients exact needs.
