GetResponse Down - Investigating DDoS Attack...

Just throwing this out there in case anyone is wondering what's going on with GetResponse today.

Apparently they are investigating a DDoS that's affecting everything including their API, email sending, etc...

You can keep track of things on this page: GetResponse Status

UPDATE: This thread was originally started within 30 minutes after the DDoS attack started. It's been over 72 hours. Click Here To Read The GetResponse CEO Statement Regarding the DDoS Attack

From what I've seen, it's going to be a couple more days until service is fully restored.

I think they're white hackers. They usually just do that to point out flaws and force companies to upgrade their security.

    Yes, Getresponse.com is down.

It seems to me that they had this same issue a month or two ago.

I am sure that they are aware of it and are fixing it but it makes a lot of people mad that this keeps happening over and over again.

The worst thing you can do in situations like this is to flood their support center. If you know there is a fault and they have acknowledged it, then you know they are currently working on it and want to get it fixed asap.

But everyone jamming their support lines only slows down the process.

It's been down since around 12PM central. By the way I recommend everyone to use GR's API to save leads to GR directly and also save your leads on your database. That way even if GR is down, you will still collect leads and everything will work, all you have to do is upload the new leads later. I would have lost hundreds of dollars if I didnt have this system in place.

DDoS attacks happen for many reasons. Here is an excerpt from a good article:

      • Extortion via a threat of a DoS attack: The attacker might aim to directly profit from his perceived ability to disrupt the victim's services by demanding payment to avoid the DoS attack.
      • Turf wars and fights between online gangs: Groups and individuals in engaged on Internet-based malicious activities might use DoS as weapons against each others' infrastructure and operations, catching legitimate businesses in the cross-fire.
      • Anti-competition business practices: Cyber-criminals sometimes offer DoS services to take out competitor's websites or otherwise disrupt their operations.
      • Punishment for undesired actions: A DoS attack might aim to punish the victim for refusing an extortion demand or for causing disruption to the attacker's business model (e.g., spam-sending operations)
      • Expression of anger and criticism: Attackers might use the DoS attack as a way of criticizing the affected company for exhibiting undesirable political, economic or monetary behaviors.
      • Training ground for other attacks: Attackers sometimes might target when fine-tuning DoS tools and capabilities for future attacks, which will be directed at other victims.
      • Self-induced: Some downtime and service disruptions are the result of the non-malicious actions that the organization's employees took by mistake.
      • No apparent reason at all: Many victims never learn why they experienced a DoS attack.

        Latest Update:

Following the latest conference call with Windstream and our DDoS mitigation partners, the three teams are working around the clock to re-enable our network. The initial priority is to restore web service, customer login, API and web forms. We have worked out a solid plan with Windstream to accomplish this ASAP. Also, we have committed to a significant investment in DDoS mitigation. Our goal is to launch an always-on DDoS, taking advantage of Akamai's 1.8 Tbps of dedicated mitigation bandwidth that can stop all future attacks. We sincerely apologize that this outage is extending and we thank you for your continued support and loyalty during these difficult moments.

Their is nothing "white hat" about hammering a commercial service and costing tens of thousands of people money. And there is nothing "hacker-like" about a DDoS.

Thanks for sharing the link, Mark. I knew Getresponse was down when I tried to access my account and saw their temporary page explaining the situation. However I wasn't aware about the status page, which will be a useful page to bookmark for future reference.

As Jesus Perez mentioned, it's good that they've put up a status page and it's also good they've put up a temporary index page. So many companies don't even bother to inform their customers in any way about planned outages, let alone unforeseen ones.

          A message from Our CEO,

          Dear GetResponse Customer,

As you may know, GetResponse is currently suffering from a major outage caused by a large DDoS (distributed denial of service) attack that has flooded our network and our datacenter with malicious traffic. As a result, our network is currently offline.

We are currently working around the clock with our datacenter, Windstream, and two of our DDoS mitigation service providers (CloudFlare and Akamai/Prolexic) to mitigate this attack and implement a permanent solution to fix this problem.

While we have had strong DDoS mitigation in place (which has thwarted several previous DDoS attacks), this weekend's attacks have been unprecedented in scale and volume. We have decided to engage the most advanced and most powerful anti-DDoS scrubbing products available on the market today (with bandwidth capacity exceeding 1.8 Tbps), and we are currently making infrastructural changes to get it done.

Over the last two months this attacker (or a group of attackers) has targeted many other large Internet companies, including Meetup, Shutterstock, MailChimp, Fotolia, Basecamp, oDesk, SurveyGizmo, MadMimi, OkCupid, HootSite, Typepad, Elance, Aweber and others. It is unfortunate, but these types of attacks are becoming much more frequent in today's environment.

I want to reassure you that none of your data was lost, corrupted nor compromised.

Your account is offline, but, is absolutely 100% intact. You will be able to access all of your data immediately after we come back up. I realize that all of the above is of little comfort, as *you* are our customer and you are currently having trouble accessing your GetResponse account, unable to send your newsletters.

I want you to know that I am extremely sorry at the turn of events, and again -- we are on this 24/7 until we get back up and running. I thank you for your trust, your support and your loyalty during these difficult moments.

          Regards,

          Simon Grabowski
          CEO

Let's face the fact: data belongs to those who collect it. While I perfectly understand the lack of usable and easy software for autoresponders and thus the marketplace for Getresponse and others, this outage clearly show how unreliable it is to use third party services.

Install whatever free autoresponder software you have out there and run it yourself. Push developers to create usable autoresponders. If you ask me, autoresponders shall be a part of the email system on computer. We are building our software for free and for everyone to use it. The basic principle of our software is data is kept offline, on your own computer or office server, totally separated and isolated from Internet. And you can switch your online SMTP server within a minute. No need to rely on anyone.

I'm being told that full functionality may take a few more days to be completely restored. We're coordinating with multiple third parties, and that they need some time to get the fix in place.

      the official update:
"We are making progress with our DDoS mitigation which, once complete, will give GetResponse the strongest always-on anti-DDoS protection in the email marketing space (provided by two largest providers, Akamai and CloudFlare). GetResponse 360 IP and DNS changes are currently propagating. Many GetResponse 360 customers can already access their control panel. We are working on bringing back full access to the control panel, API, web subscriptions, landing pages, surveys for all of our 360 customers. For GetResponse SMB (shared) customers, we are taking steps to resolve issues with limited email delivery. We are working around the clock to execute the plan. We thank you for your continued support, loyalty and understanding. "

The unfortunate truth is that as Paul pointed out, these are thugs/punks doing this. These are not white hats, these are criminals. As the GR CEO (Simon) pointed out, these attacks have been launced at a number of online companies and several ESPs. No one is immune to this and if anyone claims they are, then you've got someone trying to sell you snake oil.

Recent attacks on other ESPs seem to have been motivated by criminals seeking to extort money from the companies being attacked. I just got back from a conference where an FBI agent spoke to this kind of issue and they are all over this kind of crime.

The reaction of the ESP (how well they communicate the issue to their customers) is an important indication of just how well they have their stuff together. If you're going to judge any ESP in this kind of situation, start there.

    Regards,
    jim

          Hi cotum,

We want to be up right now, we could be up right now, butt...

          from"http://www.warriorforum.com/main-int...tresponse.html"

"On Saturday, after hours of working together with our data center Windstream (including their directors and VP-level executives), we received information that they have failed to mitigate the attack and of their decision to block our network connectivity until a powerful DDoS mitigation service can be fully implemented."

We have done everything we could to be up, spared no expense and acted immediately.

"within minutes we got in touch with Akamai, the world’s leading DDoS mitigation provider, with 1.8 Tbps mitigation bandwidth. We asked them to deploy an “always on” clean-pipe DDoS scrubbing service for GetResponse. This is the most advanced type of protection available on the market (also most expensive). It scrubs all inbound traffic for malicious packets of data and returns only “clean” traffic to our data center.

In total, we are spending close to half a million dollars in mitigation solutions, hardware, connectivity and other upgrades."

Windstream is keeping us offline until the work is completed. We must have asked to be put back online at least 30 times.

We are moving heaven and earth to get up as quickly as possible, but there is only so much RedBull(tm) that you can pour down the throat of an engineer.

GetResponse is making their best to bring their system up and working. But imagine, all YOUR data on third party like this, and you are blocked for a day. So much damages and losses.

People, get your data under your own control, whatever solutions are out there. Don't give your lists to third parties. Keep them in your premises, secured, and blast your mailing by using any software that you can run yourself.

In general, it is totally twisted, to keep your data on third party providers which you don't even know or have not seen or met personally. That is trend that started with Google and online documents.

If everyone would keep their data in their homes and offices, like it was done before, Internet and business would be much safer.

GetResponse is a Polish company. Legal Notices- email marketing - GetResponse

You acknowledge that GetResponse provides the Service and the website on “AS IS” basis without warranties of any kind, either express or implied. Particularly, GetResponse disclaims any warranty of title, merchantability, non-infringement or fitness for a particular purpose.
Without guarantee to ANY MINIMUM DELIVERY TIMES (how weird is that):

We guarantee the Service accessibility at a level of 99.5% per month on condition that there is a full availability of the services of our Internet and Telecom Providers. We do not guarantee any minimum response times or delivery times in connection with performance of the Service.
Now, imagine, you go to your dealer and pay US $2000 for a part without warranty of any kind and without guarantee that the car part is going to work. That would consist clear fraud.

@Thetacrm - You seem to be against sharing data with "providers you do have not met or known personally".

GetResponse has been a part of this forum for years, we sponsor and attend live events such as the Warrior Live Event. I don't think I've met you, maybe that's because you just joined the forum 3 days ago?

If I'm not mistaken this was your first post:

We use various own SMTP servers with SPF records set correctly, including we use Amazon AWS. First time mailing shall go through our own server, to avoid problems with spam and rejects .

We sell financial products, and in the Joint Venture, we would construct emails and give full insight to the owner of the list. In general, it is totally twisted, to keep your data on third party providers which you don't even know or have not seen or met personally. That is trend that started with Google and online documents.
So why the sudden change of heart?

You also pointed out that we are a Polish Company. What's your point? Lot's of great software engineers come from Poland.

You know what else comes from Poland?

Should I stop eating that too?

Regarding guarantees and your implication we are out to defraud our customers... does that mean that every company that sells SAAS online are fraudsters too?

                FYI - latest status update.

Update - Akamai and Windstream have finished provisioning our IP space through a fully routed always-on scrubbing service (clean pipe). We are now testing our IP configuration and working as fast as possible to resolve outbound mailing capability. Shouldn't take long now...

Update - We are making good progress on restoring full mailing capability. The current plan is to restore outbound email by tomorrow.

That's absolutely right. Yes, I can't myself stand SAAS. Yes, I am using it too, and try not to. Kind of hard.

I understand your rave, as I see, you do your best to make relations right on the right place at this forum. Good point. However, I would like it more to hear from Polish person of GetResponse, as I am of Slavic origins and in fact a house of mine is located just few meters to a Polish village. I bet they would not, like you did, go through unrelated postings of me, to attack me, what a shame, such a big company against me, a simple client, as I know the mentality of Polish people. Part of my family came from the area.

Hmm, no, that was not me with 660,000 people in the list, but I certainly do Joint Ventures in online marketing. However, without clear information and contract, I would pass. Joint Venture requires partners, and not a SAAS provider. Partners don't pay for services without guarantee, but are sharing resources and mutual income. You are not partnering, you are providing a paid service, but how quickly you found it necessary to find anything wrong that I might have said...

Nothing wrong with Poland, and GetResponse being there, I am just pointing out that people don't read terms and conditions, they have no idea where a company is located, who is keeping their data, and what true risks are out there if such data, and it is huge, is stolen, or otherwise abused. Nobody can know that, and when I see your manner of response to my opinion how data shall be kept by those who collect it, or with those one knows personally, I actually doubt if such theft or abuse of data would ever be disclosed for the sake of your PR.

BTW, let me tell you, I am fond of hot dogs and mustard, and if you think hot dog origins are from Poland, please edit the Wikipedia and make the facts straight: Hot dog - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, further I don't see how a hot dog picture can make your outage situation better.

Neither I see how your jokes are funny, in fact, I am disgusted how lax you are handling that situation and how you think I shall be your target to attack.

Your Terms and Conditions in regards to warranties would not hold in courts of Poland, that is my opinion, knowing the laws of many European countries. You can try to avoid all the responsibilities and liabilities, but it won't hold in European Union, it is not USA.

Imagine you need some fuel, and there is outage on the fuel station, but you have already paid for 50 gallons. Would you get your money back?

The best way to make it right is to tell to all of us, how you are going to cover the damages people had, for example:
                1. Would you pay people's monthly fees back? You have the uptime guarantee. Are you going to apply it to each user? Or do they need to find Terms and Conditions themselves and make a ticket to cover their monthly fee?
                2. Would you award users a special bonus for next month?
                3. Tell more about the protection of the service.

The image Mick posted was a Polish sausage, not a hot dog. They eat them all the time at GetResponse headquarters.

OK sure, ha ha, only isn't a hot dog a sausage? Made in Poland. Each country have it today (almost). Danish say it's theirs. German say it's theirs. It's polish too. Dobry apetyt

I never saw anyone eating one at head office. However I'm two weeks in on a diet, and this Canuck could kill for a Polish sausage right now.

    We are sending emails again.

Update - We're currently delivering emails held in queue as well as add queued contacts to your target campaigns.
    May 1, 04:25 EDT

Update - Great news: We have managed to resolve outbound mailing capability. All emails that had been scheduled in the past days will now be sent, however it may take several hours in order to provide the best possible deliverability.

New scheduled emails may have a bit longer delivery time as we are dealing with a quite large volume of emails that were scheduled in the past few days.

If you have any questions about your newsletters or account, please contact our Customer Service Department at support.getresponse.com (GetResponse 360 customers, please contact your Account Managers).

Yeah this is hurting me a lot.

2 JVZoo products ready to launch and can't email out my buyers list.

3 websites w/ very complex autoresponders and integration w/ callloop setup - and can't launch. Sadly, I'm rebuilding everything with constant contact for these websites as they are already behind schedule.

This is the first time that I've had issues w/ Getresponse in the past 15 years. But, the issues of last week (continuing into this week) have easily cost me $5k+ and business must go on.

I have confidence that they can get it done - but having been on the side of several DDOS attacks myself, I realize that it can be a painful process.
