How much will it cost me to build a site like Goodreads?

Hi there, fellow Warriors, as you've probably figured out by now - what with having read the title - I'd like to find out how much it'd cost me to build and annually sustain a social cataloging website on the order of Goodreads.

One with a search engine aimed at finding particular books, one that'd allow for review and rating posting, that'd allow users to make their own profile pages and groups, send messages to one another, add friends, have me - the admin - in their friends at inception with the option of removing me from friends if preferred. Also, a website that'd earn me a little fee every time someone bought a book on, say Amazon or Barnles & Noble, through a link on my website. In addition to that, a site that'd make it possible for a member to personalize a bookshelf by using a widget which they could then post on their blog, like Blogger for instance.

Would a 50,000 USD budget be enough? I am serious about this. Constructive answers, professional experience and recommendations would be very welcome on my behalf.

I would say that would be more than enough.
Given the initial amount you have put, I would say you expect a lot of traffic to the site.
Given that it may be better to start with a managed dedicated or cloud server, that would run about 2.5 to 4k annually, you can scale higher as site grows, but this should be enough for a large amount of traffic.

Design (good design) would cost around $500 to $1000, development would be $1000 to $3000. but these would be once only.

Then would be your SEO and marketing budget, SEO has too wide a range but I would say around $12k per year with a good SEO firm should put and keep your site where you want it.

even accounting for unforseen costs, $20k should be enough.

On the other hand, a low budget version could be run as well.

Thank you for the reply, mate. May I ask if you happen to know of a company that'd make me an A-class website of the kind? And yes, the higher the traffic the better, right? If you had to hazard a guess, how many monthly visits do you suppose a 12k annual SEO budget would earn me?

I developed and maintain a similar site to Goodreads, in terms of the business concept but a lot different in terms of design and functionality. It runs as Bookia, it's in Greek, I hope you can figure it out. If it is all Greek to you, I suggest to give it a try through Google translate. In any case I'm here to help remotely. Software is multi language ready but English interface is not yet translated.

It is developed to support local readers so they can socialize based on books and writers. Currently support book updates through feeds, user<->book relations (own, reading, read, wish, give, barter etc), personal library maintaining, user<->user communications, book givings, conversations, reader groups, Facebook login, books/writer following and several more features.

It is up and running for 6 months with great success!

I'm interest in investigating the potential providing and support the software for your business. It can be provided one off or work as partners based on your business plan.

Please feel free to contact me and discuss details.

(Developed in php, mysql, elastic search. Is running on a Linux server)

    Hi there!

That is a massive task that you are suggesting..

First of all, good luck in your endeavours.

Second, To actually design and develop the website depending on your own skills will probably cost you around $8,000 - $10,000 if you want something that is visually attractive and has the same functionality as Goodreads.

I have a question for you though, why do you want to build a site like goodreads when it already exists? Are you doing it for the money? What will your site do that Goodreads (owned by Amazon) cannot do?

To build a clone is the easy part, to build a huge user base and community is the challenge.

Anyway best of luck and hopefully I gave you a few things to think about.

I'd echo what Michael said in terms of expecting $8k to $10k (at least) for a site that really works and that's assuming offshore labor rates. No doubt you'd get cheap quotes on elance etc, but to compete at the level or caliber of Goodreads, it will require strong design, aesthetics and good coding. Plus then you need to factor in the cost of building your unique angle. It sounds like you've thought this through and have a reasonable budget. Assuming you can make the business plan work, I'd say just be careful of skimping on your actual site development.

    Best of luck!

  • I think you can start with that budget, but apart site building cost that won't be too much, keep away some money for big advertising, including FB Ads, Adwords, banners, and even offline advertising on magazines and partner websites.

Even more, take care of your customer care really well, and be sure your programmers will keep your website updated and working, with a good backup plan.

Good luck with your great project!
    See you,
    Alessandro
