Depends what you want to do.

If you want to make money from blogging then use WP, if you want to build out a fully structured and enabled site as the basis for a business then use Joomla.

Wordpress is easier to use by a long shot.

My observation is that Drupal developers are in demand -
I would say it's the platform to learn.

    I use both.

Each platform has a different purpose and depends on what you want to do.

Joomla is great for building a "full featured" site including membership. (although with WPwishllist and others you can make wordpress a membership)

I agree with Loren that WP is waaay easier to learn than Joomla.

I build all my customers sites on Wordpress. Its like joomla/mambo in the old days.

If you are going to be teaching your clients to post etc then wordpress is a lot easier to teach.

Here is my video on Wordpress performance over the last three weeks.

WordPress hands down if you want the best blogging software.
WordPress hands down if you want simplicity and flexibility without headaches.

If you need a complex site structure above and beyond that which WordPress has to offer, Joomla is an excellent choice, but in todays world, I would also test Drupal. I know a number of large companies switching to Drupal, as it appears to be the hot new trend.

I was on the Joomla documentation team (briefly) back when we switched from Mambo to Joomla. It is an excellent CMS, but it has a very steep learning curve. Personally, I would start with WordPress, get my footing established, while mapping out and determining my needs for growth. Then if you need more, switch to the best full-featured CMS you can find.

Many of the "self-proclaimed gurus" and well-known Internet Marketers use nothing more than a beefed up WordPress blog site with plugins, and subcontract secure/complex functions such as credit card processing and lead capture/autoresponder work to 3rd party companies.

    Hope this helps.

I keep hearing people say Joomla! is harder to learn and I do wonder why. For myself, I learned both by scratch, forums, and trial and error. I think they had compatible learning curves, although WP has more training resources - right now. I have websites in both formats and if you are just starting out, I would agree that WP is the way to go, because there are many "marketer" templates around.

As far as CMS though I use Joomla! with integrated blogs on my lead websites, where I (or outsource) personally put fresh content. Its great for team access too. The ONLY time I use a WP blog now is if I create an auto-content-drip, the kind of blogs I do not put my name on, but use for ranking purposes.

If I had to guess which platform would be taking over the world in the next 1 to 3 years, I now think it's Joomla!

I have to admit, I am a tab bit biased here since I've only dealt with WordPress. So, because of that I am going to have to go with WordPress as my platform of choice.

WordPress is incredibly simple to use and does just about everything I want it to which is why I see myself sticking with it for a long time to come.

I have dealt with Joomla, Drupal and Wordpress and for me its the later that wins hands down. Both Joomla and Drupal have very steep leaning curves and time is of the essence in todays marketplace.

You can do just about anything with Wordpress since it has a huge community of developers, umpteenth plug-ins to add functionality and it can be hooked up with other softwares (the easy ones) to increase the functionality.

I am currently putting together a membership site driven entilly by Wordpress and Delavo - so far so good . So if its recommendation of the 2 you are after, I say go/or stick with Wordpress. unless you wana re-live your college/uni days learning and re-learning how the Joomla scripts works and its functionalities.

I use Wordpress for my blog. Honestly, I wanted to use Joomla but it seems far too complicated for me.

It's nice to know that a lot of people in IM also use WP.

    blog - Wordpress

    forum - PHPBB3 (the new v 3.0.5 ROCKS!)

    basic e-community - Joomla 1.5

advanced moneymaking e-community - Xaraya (nothing is even remotely close)

static "biz card" type site or mini-site - Web Wyvern (arguably THE most powerful site architect tool on the net right now) but, of course, nobody knows of it's existence

I agree, but there is nothing "basic" about Joomla 1.5 which is all powerful, particularly when taking in to account the extensions available. I don't think there is a more powerful CMS out there, for any purpose or niche.

For me, it has to be Wordpress hosted on your own site.
