Best way to get started if you have $0?

Question is in the title.

I'd love to hear some general advice/techniques from the more experienced people here

What advice would you give someone who was keen to get started on IM but had absolutely no money to begin?

I know the cliche would be: raise some funds, even if only $xx, and then [insert activity here]. I guess we'll just see how the discussion goes

Thanks all!

Find a niche you are interested in. Create your own blog or site and work on getting traffic to it.

There are many ways to monetize a blog or site.

    Wow, that's tough...

With $0, you want to make money. Well, 1st thing that comes to mind is go to iwriter.com and register. Then start writing articles. That's probably the easiest to start making money.

Or start a fiverr gig and offer something that you can do well. Sing a birthday song!

Or find something a lot of marketers don't like to do themselves and charge good money for it to do it. If you know how to design logos or any kind of graphic design, that's a service you can sell, too. If you sit down and think about it, there are many ways to make money I guess.

So true - I'm already regretting staring this thread

Thanks all for fast responses so far!

I've considered starting a blog, but when it comes down to it I honestly don't think I'm creative enough to generate quality content. Because of this working more on domain trading appeals a lot more to me.

I'm also really interested in getting in on the affiliate marketing action, but I'm not 100% sure how people go about this with the absence of a blog etc.

I guess a different way of saying that is, how can I get into affiliate marketing without having to create blog-like-content?

Thanks again all, every post is appreciated!

If you feel you cannot create content consider Private Label Rights. There are many "PLR" clubs you can join to get existing ezine articles that will require minor tweaking.

Check the terms of service before to see if you can post them exactly as they are or what changes you need to make before using them.

Search for "PLR articles" at Google.com for plenty of options. You can even get specific to your niche by searching for "Niche PLR articles" where "niche" is replaced by your topic. (IE "travel PLR articles" "weight loss PLR articles", etc.)

With this said search for the free ones; I have seen free ones around but not too sure of the quality of what you will be getting.

Affiliate marketing is a whole new ball game. There are lots to learn about promoting other people's products. You need to learn about the product itself. You need to find out about competitors. You need to learn which traffic source is best for that product. You need to learn how to write ads for that product. You need to learn to write a followup email. The list goes on and on and on..

I've been searching around a lot! The more I read the more I realize that IM is way way WAY bigger than what the uninitiated realize. In fact it's so big that it's almost overwhelming! After doing a lot of reading I narrow down an idea I think I might be able to pull off, then I do more reading and get put off it for whatever reason.

There's nothing to regret, you'll get a lot of cliche and cheeky comments but it's a fair question - though it has been asked many times before - that could help others as well.

There are really only two distinct ways to make money using the internet. Sell something you own, or sell something for someone else. This includes advertising, affiliate linking, cost per action (CPA)...etc.

There are a few ways to make sales without a website but don't be afraid of websites. If you don't know anything about how to build a website you can buy them turnkey ready to go with pre-loaded content that will show you how to create unique content by example. The articles you get on pre-made sites are usually filled with content that's not exactly unique but it'll get you started and you can remove and replace the standard content with your own as you go along. It's quite fun.

Then you have to go out into the internet and place your link around the place (using many and various methods which you'll discover when you search through this forum) so people can click on it and visit your site. On your site you'll have material relevant to what they're looking for and will subtely suggest a few commercial solutions.

This works and has worked from day one and will continue to work because people want info. It's not fast (though it can be) and it's not going to make you too much in the start (though it certainly can) but it's a way for you to slowly learn this new craft. Eventually you'll become successful because you helped enough people. Keep that in mind (helping people) and you'll be on the right track.

Finding which topic to pursue can be a chore or a pleasure. Be careful of using your passion to start a site though. You run the risk of corrupting your passion and failing because not enough other people are hungry for your passion. It can be a good easy way to start though because you know the topic and will find it easy to make short relevant posts.

You could also do it the (what some people call) smart way and do some research into what people are buying now and build a site with a theme based on that topic. This (I think obviously) is going to be a faster way forward because you're moving into a buzzing scene instead of tapping people on the shoulder and asking them to please come and visit your site.

Once you get warm hands and can feel traffic coming and buying you can build on that experience and keep driving more and more traffic or (if it's a "flop") use your new knowledge to go after a better audience.

Don't think of this as something that has to be done today, right now, this evening or tomorrow or next week or even this month. Think of it as something you do from now on and just settle into a routine or habit of taking good solid sensible steps.

It is possible (despite what too many people think) to make thousands very fast but it generally doesn't happen right off the bat with someone as new as you (though it certainly can). Just be grateful that we have this fantastic internet that allows anyone to ply their wares for free. It's possible to make money starting from scratch for free (or very cheap), it'll just take you a little longer.

I encourage you to make it a habit of expecting success and make sure you define what success means to you. If you learn one new thing or confirm something you already knew...that's success. One single sale is a success. One more new and unique visitor is success. It's all success. Even you taking the initiative to start this thread - success!

If you're not working on your new (and exciting but lonely) website you can feel ok just reading up and absorbing information. There's a lot of good free (or cheap) information around and remember, there's really no time wasted learning or experiencing. Any step is a good step. If it takes you off on a tangent that fizzled out or circled back at least you got some exercise. Right?

Many good answers above, I would even start consulting. Is there anything you can provide to people on odesk? website designing, basic programming, content creation, etc? This is a good way and as you're making money here you can start investing it into your affiliate business

Dude, if you don't have cash yet to start your IM journey then fiverr is a very good platform to start with. you don't need any capital to start working there. Ask yourself what you are good at, go there and provide the service to other and earn quick cash. If you are good and your service is high in demand, you will surely make lots of bucks monthly using fiverr. Go there and browse the high rated gigs and see the ones you can do. Remember you can also learn new still online, youtube and other online resources are there for you. Making money online with 0 cash...the answer remains..SERVICE. ..provide quality services to others.

    Thanks. Infonet

If you don't have cash, but you have time and are willing to put in the time and work. then figure out your strengths or something you can contribute of value and partner with someone who knows what they are doing.

If you just browse around and look for a zero investment entry to IM, your gonna waste a lot of time in the info overload gauntlet that most newbies go through.

StopGap, good name as the answer is in it...

You need it... A Stop Gap!

Go get a job, earn a few bucks and even if its just a couple hundred dollars you're away, and will get success much faster than trying to build it from scratch and for nothing.

Do you really want to do Fiverr gigs, you said you cant write decent content for a blog, so whos going pay for some and the time that takes for $4 isnt really worth it.

logos stuff like that still take way too long.

I built a local marketing business and used Fiverr to get started by acquiring a lot of work from social media experts that outsource their clients graphics and custom tabs for Facebook to people on Fiverr.

I delivered value then struck up relationships, which even years later still gets my business work for far more than $4 and 14 days wait for payment I used to get through Fiverr, but don't think it was an easy route.

To do it that way you need to have the right system in place and massively over deliver, basically working for nothing for a long time.

If I was to start again I would get a part time job, as I had to at one stage anyway just to survive, then save some cash that can be invested in building my system and products to generate leads and sales through paid ads, preferably facebook, as they can be targeted well and are cheap if you do them correctly.

This way you will get success much quicker and the cleaning toilets (thats what I had to do on a building site) or whatever you need to do for a month or two will be well worth the effort.

Good luck and feel free to ask any questions.

    Hi,

1, Write down 10 things that you could offer as a service and get paid for.

    2. Re-invest what you earn from your services into setting up your first
    online sales funnel.

    3. Create something of value and give it away for free.

    4. Give this gift away for free and capture someones email address
in exchange for that free gift.

    5. You'll now be able to invest in an email A.R. service and domain and hosting
seeing as though you are getting paid for offering your skills online and getting
    paid for your time.

    6. Keep growing your list.

    7. Build relationships with your list.

    8. Start offering paid products and services to your lists.

    9. KEEP BUILDING YOUR LISTS EVERY SINGLE DAY!

    10. NEVER STOP DOING THIS!

    11. As your list grows so will your incomes from the products and services you recommend
in your emails you send out.

    12. You'll get better at email marketing through your own trials and experiences and your
confidence will begin to grow in the system you are using.

    13. Now you can begin to create your own products and services around what you have
    learned through list building.

    14. This will make you even more money.

    15. You can now attract affiliates from your own products and they will build
YOUR BUYERS LISTS FOR YOU as they can be added to a buyers list
every time someone buys from you.

Keep building, keep growing, keep repeating these steps.

Never get sidetracked by all the OVER HYPE and NOISE that is out there.

    Stick to the system.

I was a little bit like you, when i first started. Making money from selling domains is possible sure - but it is kind of" get rich by the push of a button"
You should try and work on your mindset first.
For real success, you need to put work into your online business and treat it like a real business.
I am also starting on a budget, right now(i started a few weeks ago) - and i decided to put up a blog and start driving traffic - all free methods. This is a long term strategy, i know that, but i think it is a reliable one.
Once i make money i am going to reinvest and scale it.
Think about it, i hope that helps!!

The best way to get started even if you have no money is still to build a list.

    1. First you need to find out what niche you are passionate about or good at.

    2. Secondly, are people just as passionate as you, need what you offer or recommend as affiliate and willing to spend $?

    3. Thirdly, create a free landing page using Blogger or Weebly.

    4. As for autoresponder, I will suggest Aweber which is only $1 for first month and subsequently if you continue, it will be $19.95 monthly.

But if you are really tight on $ to the point you need to make ends meet for your food, rent and family, I suggest Gary Ambrose's ListWire.

Now this is something most marketers do NOT know.

    5. Link your autoresponder to your landing page and type at least 10-15 follow up emails including the confirmation email at the start.

    6. Google search for forums related to your niche. Join them and interact with the members while leaving your squeeze page link in signature below your post just like this forum.

    7. Facebook search for groups related to your niche. Do the same as what you do in forums. After you gained say 10-15 friends, create your own Facebook group and invite them to join.

    8. Create another blog using Blogger sharing about yourself and experiences in the niche.

A blog is what you used to build relationships with your subscribers through sharing via emails as you do not want to give others you are spamming by sending offer emails all the time.

    9. Create a Youtube channel and invite them to watch your videos and subscribe to your channel as well.

With that said, this is how you make $ with no money.

    Hope that helps

This ^ you can get started extremely cheap but a little extra cash can go a long way to making you some real money. For example I shoveled driveways, sold stuff on eBay and reffed hockey to make some extra money to help pay for basic stuff like domains, hosting and an autoresponder

I've read some great responses on this post that I myself could use. However, being that I've literally had $0 last month and now I have $200 and counting I think my advice would be the most beneficial to someone with absolutely nothing being that I've been there plenty of times.

      1. LEARN FROM YOUR MISTAKES

If you've had money before and constantly keep going broke than what are you doing to stay in that trapped position of not having money? Write down everything and anyone that is a liability and do what you personally feel is necessary to make an improvement.

      2. It has been mentioned before on this post, but it works, which is find a niche that you are passionate about and offer it to someone that is seeking your services. Sites such as fivver.com, elance, and a new one I just came across called thumbtack are all great places to start (This is actually how I gained income recently). I learned how to do radio production in college using software such as Adobe Audition. There are plenty of people who need my services to edit and produce for their podcast, radio shows, blogs, etc. I'm currently using my skill to make money while I invest it back into Internet Marketing which brings me to #3.

3 Invest the money you make back into your business. This is actually the most important because as the saying goes "It takes money to make money." Put aside the money you've made to put towards your daily expenses (food, rent, car payments, phone, etc) then what you have left over, use that to invest into your business. And if you do not have enough at the time, continue to save up to how much it would cost to get started.

      4. Try some online referral IFW programs such as Project Payday. Although most of these are scams, some of them do pay you quick cash for signing up to websites that have trial versions. Once you sign up, cancel your trial membership immediately so you won't get billed after your trial membership is up unless you want to continue using the site you signed up for. After you've completed so many sites, you'll earn a quick $50 for doing so. I've personally done this as well and was actually surprised to see $50 in my Paypal account just for signing up to websites.

However, this way of making easy money can be beneficial to someone with nothing, but it also can be nerve wrecking as well especially the referral part of getting people to sign up by sharing your referral link which is prohibited on almost every website you can imagine including Facebook, twitter, craigslist, and this forum (which is why I didn't share my referral link).

Hope this helps especially being I've been in that position plenty of times and as recently as the early part of last month. Feel free to send me a message if you want my referral link to sign up to my IFW account.

I like what amuro and Jason said above......writing and audio are some of the best ways to create content, and content is what people consume, whether for free or for money.

Re-writing existing articles in your own words is an easy way to create unique content, which can be uploaded to Amazon Kindle for free, or placed on your own blog. Then, simply insert links or ads to affiliate offers.

Audio: read out your short articles and upload to Soundcloud.com, and use the link from that audio content to promote your blog or to attract readers to your affiliate offers.

Be encouraged.....loads of us started with nothing!

Amazon Mechanical Turk is an interesting platform where people post all kinds of easy tasks. They don't pay much for it, but you have plenty of options to choose from so it should be useful to you, since you said you don't have a particular ability like writing good quality content. You'll see there are plenty of choices in there, for all kinds of persons.

I think that some folks here responded incorrectly to your question. "How to start with $0"

    Here's my take:

1.Building a list. No. That will cost you an autoresponder. I would STRONGLY discourage anyone to use a free one like mailchimp
2.Setup a blog. Same remark as 1. If you cannot afford a couple of bucks a month for hosting YOUR blog, I would discourage to start a blog on a free platform. So that's not an option
3.Anything for which you NEED your OWN website. (again, will cost you a couple of dollars a month). This goes together with "create a landing page", "give away a freebie", Marketing your stuff etc.
    4. Everything that starts with C. CPA, CPC etc. The C stands for COST. So if you start with 0, this is not an option.

    What's left?

-Wrting ebooks? depends. You will need a good cover (minimum $5). With a zero budget, this doesn't look as a good option to me.
-Youtube. Yes. But what are you going to post and where are you going to send the traffic to? An affiliate offer? Could be an option.
Notice that this an a "one shot" approach. But IF you make some money of this, you could use it for points 1, 2 , 3 and 4.
-revenue sharing. Squidoo (or hubpage or a couple of others) the next couple of months the hack out of it. After a coupe of hundred posts/hubs/lenses you may have made 10 bucks to get your site going.
-freelancing (on fiverr, odesk, freelance). Sell your skills. Writing, design, logos, proofreading, headers, banners, etc.etc.
-Read my book . free for certain periods. But not for the upcoming weeks. So that's a non-go either.

    But there's a LOT more..

    -online surveys (see my blog)
    -microjobs (= microearnings)
    -get paid to watch TV
    -get paid to listen music
    -get paid to read emails
-get paid to click on links
-get paid to surf the web
-get paid as a mystery shopper
    -get paid to take pictures
    -get paid to test software
    -get paid to test products

Hi there, Just would like to reiterate what the previous warriors have said.

    1) Ask yourself why are doing this and what do you want to get out of this? Better lifestyle? Build a better future? Clear some debts? Whatever your reason your doing this you, my advice is to write it down somewhere because when you come across some difficult days and feel like you want to give up. THIS WILL HAPPEN!!! Then all you got to do is look at your list of reasons to motivate yourself. It also helps to talk to someone who is successful and maybe bounce some ideas off them.

2 Find a niche that you have some interest in but made sure isn't saturated. Its probably a good idea to spend a few hours doing some research on what hot and what's not. I personally tend to find 3 niches that I have an interest in and list all the pro and cons of each one.

    3) Be prepared to invest in your future. You say you don't have any capital at the moment and that fine. It will take longer to succeed however it isn't impossible. My advice would to look at your skill set, see what you can do and maybe offer your services for some cash. PM if you want more advice on that I got a few ideas.

    4) Once you have some capital behind you, then look to reinvest in the correct tools to help you achieve your goal. You will need the following if you decide to go down affiliate marketing route...

Autoresponder - Aweber is many people favourite including mine.
Domain and Hosting - Go Daddy and HostGator is the one's I use.
Wordpress - If you don't know any coding then I highly recommend using this.

Purchase a copy of Newbie to Millionaire Ebook. Fantastic read and I learnt a lot of handy tips from that.

    5) Look to build your LIST. There many ways you can do it but I won't lie to you, it can be the most frustrating part of the job. However when you do start to build up your prospects(LIST) It's very important to remember that you need to look after them, give them value and because of that, your list of prospects will always look after you.

    6) Look for related product to do with your niche but remember it doesn't have to be exactly related to that niche. For example if your niche has something about writing movie scripts then look maybe you can have How to write a EBOOK affiliate product or How to design a great book cover for EBOOK. There are so many thing on places like clickbank that worth exploring.

    7) Don't rest on your laurels. Stake out your competition, ask yourself every day "how can I improve on what I got?" I good entrepreneur is someone is doesn't follow and set trends, they are always looking out for the next big thing.

    8) LAST ONE..... DON'T BE AFRAID TO MAKE MISTAKES!!!

Hope this helps you. I be glad to answer anymore questions that anyone may have. Please just PM.

    Owen

I personally started out on eBay, I went round the house and got together a pile of 20 items I no longer use or want, clothes, electronics, video games etc. Took pictures of each on my phone. Then listed them on eBay. I made around £200.

I took that and invested it again. I'm still selling on eBay now as well as other things.

Its obviously not instant and involves work, having to put together the listings, wait for a buyer (usually not too long), package and post, if you're new to selling on eBay then Paypal hold your fees until buyer leaves pos feedback or 30 days.

    Its another option to consider.

5 years ago, I literally had nothing. Not even a computer. Not even a HOME.

I began my quest towards a sustainable income by first beefing up my resume with pro bono writing work; on the surface, I knew my work was worth money, yet I knew that money would have to wait.

Next, I began helping a nationally renowned coupon clipping wizard develop her website - from the library at 2 hours per day. In exchange for that, she purchased me a laptop and had it sent Site to Store to my Walmart. From there, she paid me a $250 a week stipend to help promote her site/add content.

I saved 4 week's worth of paychecks and continued sleeping under a quiet bridge.

I was then able to pay for a studio apartment (including damage deposit) and get some food. I paid my studio apartment rent each month, bought the bare minimum groceries and purchased an Elance membership.

At first, I didn't exactly 'take off' on Elance. First month I made $900. But it was the outside work that I was able to get by posting ads for link building and content writing in paid areas (Backpage, for one) that helped supplement my initially poor income.

Since September, 2010, I've made about $194,000 (give or take) online. Yeah, not exactly 'riches', but my goal wasn't 'getting rich'. I wanted an income, sustainability and the opportunity to grow with digital marketing trends...and I have. I've been able to take a loan out for my 2012 VW Jetta (bought in 2012 with 22 miles on it), pay off debt, go on several vacations and many extended road trips, feed myself and now beautiful fiancee, and have done more than I thought possible...

      ...and I started out homeless.

Three keys to getting from where you are to where you want to be:
      1. Know your strengths and weaknesses - don't try to perform work you know isn't within your skillset.
      2. Start small - working for peanuts doesn't sound appeasing, yet you cannot expect clients to pay you Ribeye prices when your resume resembles a hamburger.
      3. Price your services fairly - just because you have the knowledge to complete the task, it doesn't mean clients should suffer your wrath price-wise. Fair prices equal repeat work and good rapport; extraneous pricing leads to rejected bids.
Remember where you came from; if someone helps you navigate the road to freelance success, pay it forward.

If you have $0 then a website will cost you hosting, domain etc. Unless you use something free like Wix.

I recommend taking something that sells well on Clickbank and promoting it through social media. That's a decent way to start.

You could also try Fiverr. It costs nothing to start on there.

  • To do this without a blog of your own go the affiliate route and comment on as many other blogs as you can leaving your affiliate related product link in the website fields of the comment box. Also, do this same thing on social networks like facebook groups and such

You don't need money to start earning money online but you will have to plug yourself into the online world to make it work. For instance, you could start a Facebook group for your product or idea. And, then funnel leads to any website you want. So let's say you want to promote affiliate products about weight loss. You could start a Facebook group for sharing weight loss tips and success stories. The more specialized your group, the better. So for instance, you might have a niche group just for new moms trying to lose weight after pregnancy or seniors wanting to take off the pounds. Then you would target others on Facebook who are in similar groups and fans of similar pages.

Firstly, it can definitely be done. Without money it will take longer, but as long as you have time you can be successful.

There are lots of methods you can utilise. Do some research and pick ONE that you can actually see yourself doing. Then totally stop thinking about any other method and focus on this one method, keep going until you make it work. Don't get distracted by other possible methods. This is critical otherwise you will constantly be looking for another method and never actually implement anything.

      Some suggestions;

      Article Writing
Fiver Gigs - something simple such as forum commenting
Product review site with traffic coming from blogs and forums
Simple tasks on platforms such as Mechanical Turk

If you have zero money, it's going to be really tough.

A lot of people will say affiliate marketing - but the cold hard truth is that without a budget, without a funnel, and without a solid autoresponder it can seem impossible to succeed.

My advice? Leave affiliate marketing for when you can afford the toys that go along with it.

For now, focus on offering a service. (On Fiverr, freelancer, iwriter, or anywhere you can).

That's the best advice I can give you. It's free to get started, and use those income streams to fund your next venture.

Getting started online with no money is solved easily with the writing and freelance work available, if your writing ability is at least decent. Just join sites like ReviewStream and Textbroker, and write a couple of articles for each daily. With RS you can pick your topics, and Textbroker almost always has assignments available.

Between submitting 2-3 articles to both daily one can earn about $15-20/day from writing, while staying in control of getting work. This working cash can be supplemented with Fiverr and other freelance gigs. This is the money that can then be funneled into better IM endeavors from affiliate marketing, to list building, etc.

So I take it that your goal is to make money with IM, and starting with zero dollars?

Yeah by far the best way is to set up a blog.

Now keep in mind that this will take you much longer to achieve success, than if you could just pay for traffic. But since you have more time than money, then this is pretty much the only way to get going.

There are a ton of people who are looking for money online, without having to spend any money. The problem though, is that your time is much more valuable than money is, and it's your thinking that need to change.

What I mean by that, is yeah you could start with no money, but you're going to be trading your time to get something online off the ground and you will most likely get frustrated because it's gonna take a long time.

In any event, to answer your post, yeah creating a blog and getting traffic to your blog, with affiliate links to offers like clickbank or CPA, will do the trick!

In my opinion? Get a job in real life for few days, you'll have more then enough money to get started. Without an investment it'll take you way more time to get started and you'll work way harder.

Forums. Gaming forums are huge. Wrestling forums are no joke either. Even this forum is great. Pick one and be cool. I've made money from forums where people used to download stuff for free.

You can say it was sort of like a blackhat forum but just not in the make money niche. The reason was that place had so many members and so many guests so getting traffic from that place was soooo easy.

Sadly it was shut down. But hey there are plenty of other forums. Blogs work but they are a little bit slower if you are commenting. I have never done guest posting but I here it is also a good method for larger spikes in free targeted traffic.

It might sound like a dream breaker but you should get a part time job
    Or
Use your credit card to fund your investments. You can sell things on amazon or ebay, make the money back and reinvest.
You can sell services online like logo designing or seo services, doing surveys for money, etc.
You can even start an offline side business like fixing people's computers, cleaning their houses, so you can fund your internet marketing.

  • I greatly feel the need to add a greatly needed service that every marketer will use either sooner or later and thats an AUTORESPONDER for collecting leads especially the buyer typed.

But they tend to cost monthly fees except for the ones I'm about to mention which are all FREE:There are also several free autoresponder plugins for wordpress which are also free. Now some of these may show ads to compensate for their free service but its still good when you got no money.

    Hope this helps

    p.s.
You'll still need a slick up to date squeeze page maker like all the gurus use so thats where I come in at........

So much said by fellow Warriors.
    1.Get a job
    2. Join a free lance community and render service.
    3. Sell something you no longer need on EBay. cool I like this one.
Assuming the poster does not like (1) & (2) above.
You can go headlong into affiliate marketing or sell your own info product without a website or blog and start building your list.

    All you need do is;
1.Research and determine a niche you intend to profit from.
2.Create a squeeze page or a landing page using Get response landing page creator connecting into your prospect's desires, fears and frustrations. (With this getresponse provides a link you can direct those that are interested in your offer.
Signing up with getresponse is free for a month and for your first 250 subscribers)

3.Look for a forum that your prospects hangout and
join the forum. Carefully embedd your link in your carefully crafted signature.

    4. As people join your list offer them the products that meets their needs while offering them valuable info.

If you do this right , in no time you will earn money to run your business properly like buying traffic, getting your website and paying for getresponse service.

This should help you start with $0 upfront.
