I think it can be a great way to give important updates and provide highlights from the forum discussions if done right. I just hope it doesn't end up full of ads and promos

I think it's a great idea, and a fantastic way to engage members that tend to be less active on the forum but still like to follow the latest topics being discussed. We may get some less often heard voices on the forum. Good idea all round.

I am surprised It has not been done before.
It looks like a way for the forum to earn more money, if they are acting as the affiliate of the programs they post.
Perhaps it is me being cynical, maybe they don't get commission.
Either way it will result in certain products being saturated in the market place.

I thought it was spam when I first saw it. Wasn't used to receiving any form of communication from the forum. It really is a great idea and the fact that it's a weekly newsletter, the improvements to the newsletter will be noticeable rather quickly.

I came across an article on BRW, "Freelancer.com buys Warrior Forum: 'the marketing community that never marketed itself'"

The main takeaway from the article:

Barrie has spent three years in negotiations to buy the site, whose 732,000 members help make it the 225th most visited website in the world, yet whose founder Allen Says never once sent an email to his user base.

"It's ironic that the largest internet marketing community in the world did no marketing of its own," Barrie says.
The newsletter is to engage users, bring them back to the forum, and of course to monetize. It's a great strategy.

I'm looking forward to the weekly newsletter and some great content.

Yep, I got it... On my SPAM folder. I have cleared now the email of the newsletter as "safe". Simple design and relevant announcements... Like the halving the costs for posting a WSO and the new yearly subscription model for the War Room. More expensive in the long run, but I think is compensated by the lower fee for posting a WSO.

  • A newsletter?

Thought it was spam as it looked more like a sales pitch for optinlinks at 70% off. You know, with the headline being: "Get up to 70% optin rates!" and all.

Which by the way isn't much of a "Warrior Deal of the Week" as claimed in the newsletter, when the main public website offers the exact same discount.

The other info was pretty much rehashed info from what has happened over the last while.

So yeah, I guess its more tailored to those who don't hang out here much.

    Either way, I unsubscribed.

Ya, the idea of the newsletter is Ok But the Warrior Forum uniqueness is being diluted in my opinion!

IMO what I liked about it, is that we can engage, contribute, learn, make money but for the most part left alone! So if changes are happening to maximize the bottom line then that is where the risk of getting too big and maybe loosing some of the juice and the uniqueness identity!

Question: About the WSO- Do they still they still have to be a product or service that you created or anything goes? Because I believe that the WSO's kept as it was for years is a big part of the success!

CAN-SPAM Act: A Compliance Guide for Business | BCP Business Center
Each separate email in violation of the CAN-SPAM Act is subject to penalties of up to $16,000, so non-compliance can be costly. But following the law isn’t complicated. Here’s a rundown of CAN-SPAM’s main requirements:

        1. Don’t use false or misleading header information. Your “From,” “To,” “Reply-To,” and routing information – including the originating domain name and email address – must be accurate and identify the person or business who initiated the message.

        2. Don’t use deceptive subject lines. The subject line must accurately reflect the content of the message.

        3. Identify the message as an ad. The law gives you a lot of leeway in how to do this, but you must disclose clearly and conspicuously that your message is an advertisement.

        4. Tell recipients where you’re located. Your message must include your valid physical postal address. This can be your current street address, a post office box you’ve registered with the U.S. Postal Service, or a private mailbox you’ve registered with a commercial mail receiving agency established under Postal Service regulations.

        5. Tell recipients how to opt out of receiving future email from you. Your message must include a clear and conspicuous explanation of how the recipient can opt out of getting email from you in the future. Craft the notice in a way that’s easy for an ordinary person to recognize, read, and understand. Creative use of type size, color, and location can improve clarity. Give a return email address or another easy Internet-based way to allow people to communicate their choice to you. You may create a menu to allow a recipient to opt out of certain types of messages, but you must include the option to stop all commercial messages from you. Make sure your spam filter doesn’t block these opt-out requests.

        6. Honor opt-out requests promptly. Any opt-out mechanism you offer must be able to process opt-out requests for at least 30 days after you send your message. You must honor a recipient’s opt-out request within 10 business days. You can’t charge a fee, require the recipient to give you any personally identifying information beyond an email address, or make the recipient take any step other than sending a reply email or visiting a single page on an Internet website as a condition for honoring an opt-out request. Once people have told you they don’t want to receive more messages from you, you can’t sell or transfer their email addresses, even in the form of a mailing list. The only exception is that you may transfer the addresses to a company you’ve hired to help you comply with the CAN-SPAM Act.

        7. Monitor what others are doing on your behalf. The law makes clear that even if you hire another company to handle your email marketing, you can’t contract away your legal responsibility to comply with the law. Both the company whose product is promoted in the message and the company that actually sends the message may be held legally responsible.

That doesn't say anything about a newsletter, I was not given an opt-in form to subscribe to a newsletter and the email options in the control panel have nothing to do with a newsletter.

Alistair Low sent this out personally via
        o1.edm.warriorforum.com ([IP ADDRESS WAS HERE])

Apparently whether people had the email options unchecked or not from what others in this thread have mentioned.

I know I never subscribed to a newsletter at the warrior forum.

Does this make Alistair now responsible for the $16,000 per email he just sent out?

I understand about the notices about the ownership change. I expect to get email about PM's and issues with the forum as I have those options checked in my profile control panel.

I wouldn't of minded the initial email alerting to a newsletter, giving first edition as the email stated then provide a link for me to subscribe if I want to. I did NOT expect or give permission to automatically be put on some list or have my contact information used without permission.

What I also find VERY interesting is that the links to the Privacy and Terms of Service policies at the bottom of the pages on WarriorForum are not actively linked to any policies currently as of this post date.

I unsubscribed from the email list assuming it did anything. I also find it very interesting that the headers in the email sent refer to the newsletter as spam which gmail, yahoo and other email services will block so I am not surprised of the mentions of people not getting a copy either. Hit and miss apparently.

Would be interesting to know whether there was permission to have our contact information sold when the transfer from previous owner to freelancer took place.

The newsletter is a nice touch. Finally, the forum puts into practice one of Allen's strategies mentioned in his Private Posts book.

As for what is being put into practice, I'm not sure pitching products has been appropriately vetted. This caught my attention:

Get up to 70% optin rates!
Really? How does that ceiling work so one cannot get, for example, a 71% opt in rate?

Double or even quadruple your optin rates now with OptinLinks
Promises, promises. This is an income type promise with zero proof anywhere.

The example I saw was instead of being up front asking for someone's email address and what it is being used for, this presents a download link and then silently signs someone up for multiple email lists without their knowledge or permission.

    Should be a huge seller.

I'd suggest having better disclosures of what the email is being used for and who is getting access, and eliminating promises unless one has proof in their hip pocket.

In over a decade I don't recall the former owner ever intentionally stepping into the doo-doo where a FTC action or lawsuit could be filed putting the forum at risk because the forum itself was making promises of specific results. From private correspondence I'd say Allen was extremely sensitive to the issue.

Why do I mention this? Not because I don't see value in the product being pitched, and I'm not saying it cannot get more opt-ins. Rather, it is a slippery slope to the next newsletter pitching how to make $10,000 a month working 1 hour a day. There are other issues too, such as the requirements to even send the newsletter, which I see some others just posted about while I was drafting this. The bigger your company the bigger the target on your back.

Of course, it is the first newsletter and hiccups are bound to happen. Better to catch an issue now before it results in a problem down the road.

I got the newsletter! Don't remember opting in to anything, but I generally assume once I join a forum or website, I'll get some stuff from them. No biggie.

The newsletter looks good. Since I can't always keep up with what's going on, the newsletter will be a good way to stay current. I'm also excited about the reduced price for the War Room (didn't know about that until I read the newsletter).

So all the members can endorse products, and owners can't? Bull.

Put in the appropriate FTC disclaimers at the bottom of the email and endorse what you want. Sell advertising spots in the newsletter to make some money. Many popular newsletter monetize the newsletter by selling ad space. Talk about a solo ad opportunity for advertisers to reach a lot of people. Just vet the products so that junk is being promoted.

I got it and was happy to.

However, if they're going to promote products in it, then I think they should be SUPER discounted from the normal price. Then people would be happy to open the emails.

As it stands, even the the WSO for the OptinLinks product looks to be the exact same price as on the OptinLinks website (granted, it says it's discounted for a limited time there). I thought WSOs had to offer a discount from elsewhere. Maybe that's changing too.

Anyway, back to my main idea: if they were to offer really huge discounts (maybe only for a week or three days, etc.), it would be better both for them and for us.

I don't have a problem with a regular Warrior newsletter, but thanks to all the affiliate spammers that have been using some form of the name "Warrior" in their address or heading, it isn't surprising that many of these emails are finding their way into spam folders. Also, with the sort of heading attached to this issue (Get up to 70% opt-in rates), some recipients might have deleted the email without opening it. Just a heading saying Warrior Newsletter, with the date or issue number would be preferable.

Personally, I'd rather not get offers in the newsletter - they're unlikely to be targeted to individual interests, and if I want products, I can visit the WSO section - but if one of the aims is to engage members who haven't visited the forum for a while, perhaps the newsletter could include short details of one or two of the most popular recent threads, with direct links, emphasizing that this is still a discussion forum, as well as a marketplace.

And with the plans the new owners have for the forum, updates on changes and innovations are welcome. Even regular forum visitors might have missed details of some of those.

I think it's a great idea for keeping members updated about changes and new things that might be happening.

I'm sure it will also be an effective tool for helping to get those 'less active' members to become more involved. Which benefits the forum as a whole.

I also think having a 'newsletter archive page' is a good idea.

The only thing I'm not sure about is a how that 'Weekly Warrior Deal' will work.

Will that be something like the WF 'banner ad' system where members will be buying ad. space?

I liked getting it - reminded me that WF might have some changes to check out. Let me know about the WAMA (which, despite all the contrary thoughts on it in that section of the forums, is exciting to me. )

I just have to remember to pull it out of the swamp and put it in the priority inbox if I ever want to see it without randomly chancing upon it ;-)

EDIT : You know what is funny (to me anyway)?

I didn't even Notice the ad for the product. I'm so used to skimming over and ignoring promo junk that I went right past it and scrolled down to see if there was anything worth looking at in the newsletter. I had to go back just now and look again and LO and BEHOLD there's the promo right at the top. Now that I actually see it, it's annoying - it should be at the bottom under the "NEWS" part of the newsletter.

I don't mind it being there, having gotten promos from WPlus with their "WSOTD" junk forever (and largely ignored after my first year on WF). I don't like seeing it first thing when I am looking for news and updates.

If you must sell us, sell us after the content. The visual layout will keep the eye moving and the mousewheel scrolling down - and if we want to be sold to we will look.

Just my two pence on that.

Got the newsletter. Most of the stuff in it was old news to me, but it looked really nicely laid out.

I think the team have made a good start - the WF is stale and needs something new. Right now it's a desktop PC in a tablet world.

I got it and liked it. Wish that it had more content in it. Maybe soon.

Went straight to my spam folder. Which is nice since I've been unsubscribing to just about everything here lately.

I didn't get it either and it's not in Spam. Any idea if there will be a link to it on the forum with archives so if we don't get it, we can at least access it? I want to see it - if anyone wants to forward it to me.

Mine was in the (gmail) spam folder. Might want to try and use an a 3rd party ESP or work on getting the domain whitelisted.

As for the content, eh. It was basically three ads. Would be nice to see things like

    - links to hot threads.
    - warrior member spot lights. warriors that actually help the forum. Not from someone doing a launch.
    - Must read member blog posts.
    - links to threads that might be good but overlooked by members.

I don't mind ads in the emails, I expect them, but will start deleting them if they remain an ad fest.

That could be a problem. Have you ever tried using Google AdWords to promote anything on warriorforum.com? At least, last I tried, it wasn't a quick account ban like with ClickBank. But the entire domain was not approved to run an ad with Google. While the ad service is not necessarily connected to the email service, it would seem like something Google would do, or want to do.

As long as it´s advertising free I am fine with it.

If it contains ads however it will go straight to my spam folder...

I don't care about any of this did I opt in debate at all. I just have a suggestion for the newsletter format.

It surprised me - the subject title. I saw that it was a WF newsletter, so I thought maybe this was just one of the many spammers that use Warrior Forum name to spam people that have not opted in to any list of theirs. But then I saw that it was official. It came from the WF.

I'd rather see the content first with more of a newsy vs salesy subject line and then put the ads in between the content. That's all.

Got it. No problem with it. Can't remember what was in it tbh though.

Don't care too much that they are endorsing products.

Can't believe it wasn't happening already.

People are saying they didn't opt in for a newsletter but when you joined up you assume there might be communications from the forum and that's basically all this is.

Promises, promises. This is an income type promise with zero proof anywhere.

The example I saw was instead of being up front asking for someone's email address and what it is being used for, this presents a download link and then silently signs someone up for multiple email lists without their knowledge or permission.

    Should be a huge seller.
I bought opt in links and that's not how it works. At least I never noticed that option if it's there.

It's a 2 step opt in. Instead of the typical squeeze page type opt in method the opt in pops up in content when a link is clicked rather than someone being sent to a new page.

The person still has to enter their email and confirm they want to sign up.

Like LeadPages do with LeadBoxes except OptinLinks is a one off payment and LB is monthly. Essentially the same thing though.

I didn't get it. Pretty sure it didn't go to spam folders either. I get all the thread update notifications and I got the admin emails telling of the acquisition so I don't know what's happened.
