A few questions about picking an online niche?

Hey Guys,

Just wondering how people here go about choosing the niches they work in online:

1. Do you pick niches where you think you will make money? If so, how do you decide if it is profitable?

2. Do you only work in niches that interest you? i.e trying to make money from a hobby?

3. Do you try and combine both of the above?

Just interested.

Cheers,

Hamish

    Hi Hamish,

For me it's all about the keyword research - the data doesn't lie. Makes no difference to me whether the niche interests me or not - the money is far more interesting...

    Thanks,

I actually go wide then niche down the product this gives a lot more options to sell your product without getting locked in to one segment of the market.

Example: I have some software I sell for streaming audio so then I go wide for the general market and niche it down to streaming audio for schools, streaming audio for churches, streaming audio for poets. You get the idea.

It is the same product with the same support but lots of different niches.

I do the same with my ebooks and tutorials.

I have been doing this for years now and it works like a treat. If one niche does not work or sales slow I create others.

Malcolm Gladwell did a great talk on this and how traditional businesses do exactly the same thing.

In my opinion, it is possible to monitize almost ANY niche. The key is to offer free important info about the topic to build a list, follow-up with the subscribers and then offer them something that the niche wants for a fee.

You could probably sell sand to desert dwellers using this system.

You also forgot about original content. A full pledge copy of another list is nothing better.

My advice: Always choose a niche that you love first.

    1. Do you pick niches where you think you will make money? If so, how do you decide if it is profitable?
Yes, of course. I use some tools to analize the worth of the niche. Google keyword base tool is one as an example of the tools.

    2. Do you only work in niches that interest you? i.e trying to make money from a hobby?
No. If I think the niche has a good market, I'll fight to challenge them.

    3. Do you try and combine both of the above?
    Yes, like I said above.

I always combine both. But apparently it comes easy for me because I have diverse interests. As for checking profitability?... I just test using adwords bro.

I pick a niche based on data. I look to see if there are any affiliate programs then I do keyword research.

For affiliate marketing it is just about what will make money for me. For blogging or large scale sites that I will have to run and spend time on I try to pick something that interests me.

  • I try to find niches/keywords with products with a reasonable high commission, with Adwords advertisers that seem to make a profit there and where I think I have a chance to make it to the first page of the search results.
