Are small niche sites (10-50 pages) still a viable way to make money?

I'm questioning whether this strategy is still viable. What makes me wonder this is that it seems like over time it would become harder and harder for a new site to compete with other more established sites and that every year there are more and more sites being created.

I'm questioning whether I should start my IM career by trying to build a niche site where I try to make a few hundred per month that will give me some breathing room financially as I create my long-term goal of making a blog that promotes a product that I make. It could take a couple years before the blog makes a decent sum of money and I've heard it said that niche mini-sites take less time to make money.

I'm just worried that the niche mini-site market is saturated and that the probability of success for a noob like me is too low for it to be worthwhile. On the other I have high confidence that my long-term project will make money eventually. I'm just worried about running out of money before that.

I'd appreciate any advice.

I wouldn't call a 50 page site 'small'. But quality trumps quantity every time, in both content and websites in general.
Don't worry about 'saturation' either - provided you're sending quality traffic and have amazing content on your site, coupled with converting products, money can be made.

Have you considered combining your short and long term goals? Put up a smaller niche site to start, incorporate a blog right into it from the start. The blog itself will help with traffic, and you'll have a great chance at making some income while you're working towards your long term goal.

I'm not sure I understand how to do this. Do you mean have a main page with some articles SEO'd for keywords, plus a blog?

Sure its still viable. Try not to compete with those huge sites in the terms of SEO if you feel that fighting a spot in big G with them is hard.

You might want to drive traffic from other source than SEO.

If thats so, 50 articles is more than enough dor a site to make a decent money.

I'm not having much success in ranking small sites these days.

The only thing I can still rank are sites where I've done absolutely no SEO. And forums are still good for this.

Small niche sites can still be a viable way to make money. It's all about how you drive traffic to them. And how you intend to monetize that traffic with the small site.

When talking about small niche sites, most people think SEO. But it's definitely possible to drive good traffic without ranking even them.

    Yes, they still do.

I have a few making me $200-300 each.

The important thing is not how big or small your sites are.

But how unique and helpful your content is to searchers who are looking for information related to their search terms aka keywords?

You see, most marketers came into SEO solely with the intentions of getting their sites ranked on 1st page and making money without considering what their prospects or customers will benefit if they were to buy whatever product or service they recommend.

Let me give you an example.

Let's say if you are searching for information how to lose weight fast without compromising what I eat, will you expect to see just 1 or 2 articles, a couple of adsense ads and affiliate banners?

Or will you expect to see lots of articles each linking to one page after another with images and videos before recommending you a product review towards the very end?

Google is now paying a lot of attention to these based on the feedback it receives from readers in surveys it conducts from time to time and are acting upon it.

With that said, the days of stuffing keywords or even ranking for keywords with high searches and low to medium competition are over.

Google now ranks sites with the most relevant, helpful and engaging content to the keywords people typed to look for what they want.

Be it articles or even videos or combination with images.

    Hy people,

    @HelpingYouBeAnExpert; you wrote:

What do you mean with that? Do you mean a niche website who has only one page on it?

Does this method works well to make affiliate sales without have a list?

    best wishes

Hi NateJasper, yes you can still make decent money with single page sites. But what really are your aspirations? Are you thinking of developing sites, monetizing them and hoping to get traffic? Nothing wrong with that.

But may I suggest that you clearly define exactly what do you want to achieve out of all of this effort. Do you want to make money on the internet? Are you using the sites to achieve this outcome? If yes, then there are quicker ways to achieve this goal.

Start by building a list. Then develop a relationship with your list. And take it from there.

You can develop products and sell it and continue to develop your list. I am sure that by now you have hear that the money is in the list. It is true. So you really do not need to build websites at all if you want to make money on the internet.

My last piece of advice.... Get a Coach. There are 'tons' of them here. This would be the BEST money that you spend. Follow their advice and take action daily.

Start a small niche site with really good content and work hard to drive traffic to it. A subniche of a larger niche may work well. You can even start a related FB page and link it to your site. Build relationships with other people and they will be more inclined to buy from you.

Yes. In so far as any website can be.

My entire affiliate marketing business uses them, in each of 9 different niches and I've been making a full-time living from it for over 5 years now.

(Actually I'm exaggerating a tiny bit: a couple of mine still have fewer than 10 pages, to be honest, but they'll all eventually have 10+ pages, because I do very gradually add to them.)

    What strategy?

You didn't mention a "strategy". You mentioned a "size of website". That isn't a strategy, and in itself it has nothing to do with whether or not a site/niche is monetizable or profitable, either.

To "compete" how? Are you talking about SERP's rankings? No, sorry, but those have very little to do with monetization, either. Search-engine traffic isn't really worth anything anyway, to most people, most of the time: http://www.warriorforum.com/main-int...ml#post8659398

You said that almost as if it were a bad thing, or somehow relevant to what you're asking about in this thread???

I see ... well, here's the thing: you're a little confused about all of this, I can tell. Be aware (a) that the income isn't intrinscially proportional to the size of the site at all, and (b) that it won't (normally, typically) come from anything to do with rankings or SEO at all, whatever size of site it is. Whatever it is you do, whether it's big or small, shorter-term or longer-term, you need to be thinking about it primarily in terms of something other than "where your site will rank in Google" because visitors coming that way aren't usually the ones who will provide your income anyway.

I'd go with a direct response campaign instead of the blog approach. It's faster and easier to setup a campaign, funnel and product and start sending some traffic to it, than it is to write a bunch of blog posts, wait not so patiently to see if Google will rank it before their next algorithm change

You can have a good idea of how profitable you'l be in a few weeks with a very small starting budget, instead of waiting months and months and months and throwing money away linking until you even know it works, thats not really a good business practice

It's all about niche positioning. Not SEO. Positioning is more permanent. SEO depends on entities out side of your realm of control. With a flick of a switch or a keyboard stroke your whole SEO world could come tumbling down.

Yes, a small niche site can make money if you're able to position yourself snuggly between supply and an untapped demand. That never changes, high-tech, low-tech or no-tech.
