Tackling The Weight Loss Market. Which Business Model Seems Better?

I'm thinking of taking a stab at the weight loss market and have two business models or plans I'm thinking of attempting. I'm sure both can work, but I thought I'd get some feedback from some of you who have been working successfully in this gigantic market.

Notice I said MARKET, because that's exactly what "weight loss" is.

Here are my ideas...

First, I need to find a niche within this HUGE market and focus on it. I'm thinking of things like: weight loss for dads, weight loss for moms, weight loss for new moms, etc.

Then I'm thinking of doing one of these two business models to capitalize on it. I'd love to know your thoughts...

1. LIST BUILDING ONLY

This will be a very dead simple business model. It'll be a simple squeeze page or reverse squeeze page (to focus on high quality leads) to offer daily or weekly (M,W,F only) weight loss tips via email only. Full of personality and wit. Not too lengthy, but helpful. And of course, mix in various offers, etc along the way. I LOVE the way TheSkimm.com does their daily news for women. Something similar, but it would focus in this market niche specifically.

**PROS: No need to setup a huge content website. Easy to get started. Simple business model. Can be fully automated, only focus would be on tweaking it for conversions and marketing.

**CONS: Since it's not a content site, you lose out on potential referral traffic from SEO, etc.

2. CONTENT WEBSITE

This will be more involved. This would be your typical "hub" website similar to SurvivalLife.com. Full of articles and offers. I'm thinking of taking quality PLR, and re-working it to make sure the content is good overall.

**PROS: Could be seen as an authority with all the content, chance for a lot of sales with solid traffic, etc.

**CONS: Time consuming to setup. LOTS of sites like this already, might be tough to compete as well as keep up building content for it along with marketing. Not automated.

Anyway, that's my thinking and approach currently. I would do all of this under a pen name, etc. as well. Anything I'm missing or not thinking of?

Which model do you think stands a higher chance for success?

Consider using a combination of content and list building. What I did (in the weight loss market and other very competitive arenas as well) was to drive traffic directly from "authority" sites and publications through article syndication. Visitors to my websites would then be directed to additional information with nominal offers to purchase and subscribe for "exclusive" promotions.

There is a virtually inexaustible availability of outlets in the weight loss market with editors hungry for quality content. If you can provide suitably satisfying content on a regular basis that meets your target demographic expectations and the standards required by editors, this can drive massive quantities of highly convertible traffic. Once you narrow down your prospect profile, submit content to sites/publications that already are targeting your prospects.

IMNSHO, unless you begin building a list at the onset, your chances are slim for successfully tackling this intensely competitive market against entrenched marketing heavyweights.

Create a website with different affiliate programs on it and also give your visitors the option to subscribe to your newsletter.

So you are doing 2 things on the same website.

Inside your newsletter emails, add your website link at the end of the email so that you get repeat visitors to your home page.

How important do you think the .com domain that you use would have effect on this?

I have been sitting on 2 what I believe are very good domains for this.

    1. Weight Loss Lessons
    2. Weight Loss Makeover

    Opinions?

No effect. Good names, it just depends what you do with them.

I just bought a great .org domain in the weight loss niche and I plan to use it. I'm just figuring out my entire strategy first.

My opinion is to do both, keep your options and potential as wide open as possible. This might be easier said than done but you can automate the content for your website by hiring someone to write and post for you on a daily, weekly or monthly basis.

Pick a narrow niche. Run traffic to a squeeze page. Survey the list to find out what they want to know about. Build your site around that.

BOTH. If you're going to do one of those, my advice would be to do both, especially if you're going to "niche it out" and go for a smaller audience. Doing both will allow you to go in and dominate, if done effectively.
