How do you increase your E-mail open rates?

I was wandering what a good open rate would be on your Autoresponders or your E-mail blast to your list. Let me know your thoughts on how to increase your open rates on your existing list. Thanks.

The first thing that came to mind is to focuses on building a quality list of people that want to hear from you.

If you're mailing to your list and they aren't opening, I suggest you rethink the methods you're using to build your list. IMHO

    Wishing you much success,

Understand exactly what your subscribers are interested in, what problems they have, and what they are looking for.

If you know these points, you will be able to increase your open rate any time you want...

There are two things which came to my mind immediately. Your headlines and the value you provide in your mails.

The headline is the first thing your subscriber will see and if he does not grab the attention between hundreds of other marketers mails than your open rates will be low.

The next point is how much value do you provide in your mails. If you haven't provided much value or solutions to your subscribers life before than it's more then likely that the don't open your mails anymore.

Try to give in the next 5 mails as much value as possible in your mails. Just good content or solutions to their problems. Ask them what they have problems with and write about the solutions in your mails. Don't pitch them with anything in those 5 day's.

Engage them personally on your blog first, if you can achieve that they will open every email you send them.

    1000's on your list?
So what, how many 'proper' commentators do you have on your blog that are interested in what you have to tell them?

Those are your nuggets, treat them with the respect they deserve and not like a personal ATM.

    Better targeting of your subscribers.

I've opted in for things that were interesting and then the followups went off all over the place and what I originally opted in for wasn't mentioned again.

True, though sometimes it makes ME feel manipulated (if someone uses it every time) and I start resenting it. Then wondering about my OWN subscribers.

True too. All the first names aren't helping if they wonder why in the world they got THIS particular email. Keeping it relevant is important, and, of course, providing valuable info about the subject they were interested in in the first place.

I think an average open rate of around 20% may be considered a pretty good one.

Just a few suggestions on how to improve it:

    1) It's very important to have a short, nice and clean subject line. Avoid using some specific (potentially spammy) keywords and phrases, a lot of caps, special symbols and exclamations. Look at the subject and ask yourself - would you open that email?

    2) Update email templates at least once per week. No heavy graphics there. From my experience, plain text emails work much better in most cases.

    3) Constantly monitor the list performance and remove those subscribers who never opened your emails within 60 days or so.

And (last but not the least) make sure you're sending them interesting and relevant content.

I think that the subject line is important - a catchy phrase that cleverly summarizes the message, maybe some trigger-words like FREE, DISCOUNT, SALE, ONLY TODAY, EXCLUSIVE...
And do not email them too often.

Like a few have already said here, you, first, need to build a good responsive list.

You then need to build a really good relationship with your subscribers, and offer them great quality content. Don't just build a list and then bombard them with promotions. If you do that, they will simply ignore your emails. By all means, send promo emails to them, but not all the time!

Next, you need to know what it is your subscribers are looking for, and then give it to them. You could find out what they want by doing a survey (Survey Monkey), although you should have a fairly good idea by looking at what they gave their email address to you for. If they signed up to learn about traffic generations methods, then you can be confident in sending them information / promos on traffic generation.

In the email itself, you will certianly need a compelling subject line, and you will also need to ensure that the body of the email contains exactly what you said it would in the subject line.
