English Grammar Forum section

Greetings!

I have been seeing threads about bad grammar and how it can affect in general to your online business.

This idea may sound none sense but do you think it would be nice to have a section wherein we can ask anything about English grammar or perhaps an explanation of an idiomatic expression meaning?

Like, you are welcomed vs. you are welcome

as far as I am concerned vs. as far as I am concern

real quick vs. really quick vs. really quickly

I am aware of the off-topic forum but I just thought of asking this.

My apologies if this may sound trash to you.

Thanks,
G.B.

Your idea is not bad but I don't think new section will be built for it on this forum.

There's already a ton (or tonne ;-) ) of those forums online already. I don't see the benefit of adding another one here tbh.

I don't think that is necessary. don't have an English native tongue but when I need to educate myself I just join in other grammar forums.

You could employ someone to check spelling, punctuation and grammar. I doubt that many people would find the time to answer general grammar questions on this forum.

That said, do you need an explanation of the sentences you posted or were they just examples?

I don't see why not. There are many people who answer programming and design questions - why not grammar?

It does look bad when someone can't write proper English. But I wouldn't waste my time on it. It's their problem.

Go and look on F.B. and see the level of education there. It's disgusting!

Although grammar is incredibly important when it comes to anything word related (that's probably horrendous grammar right there), but I highly doubt an entire sub-section of the forum will be dedicated to it. I usually don't make grammatical errors, therefore I wouldn't need much "assistance".

That's just my personal opinion though.

Thanks for the inputs so far.

I just thought many of our fellow warriors who are not native English speakers including myself might be interested on this.

There are lots of slang expressions that I don't know their meanings.

I feel if there is anything we can do to help each other grasp some of the basic terms, slang and acronyms used in this field, it surely can't do any harm.
I am in the very early days ploughing through this forum and I still have to keep searching to find what some of the acronyms are.
I know there are lots of sites where we can find out meanings etc, but is that not the point; pulling information together to make life easier and help others?

Actually, "input" is neither - it's a "non-countable" noun, like "advice" and such.

IMHO the hardest part about the English language for foreigners is using prepositions correctly. I've lived In English-speaking countries for years and I still catch myself making those mistakes from time to time. Your posts are full of them.

The good news is that you're aware of the problem and you want to fix it, that puts you ahead of many, many people. Unfortunately, mastering the English language takes years of practice. So get started! There are many great grammar books out there, start from there and take online tests to measure your progress. Best of luck.

      Thanks a lot, mate.

Also, I can see that you are having this run-on-sentences issue.

Sometimes three or more independent clauses are inappropriately written together, and the result is a very long run-on sentence.

I once let a grammar cop edit a sales letter, it went from a 13% conversion rate to 0.013% conversion rate.

when I put my bad grammar copy back conversions went back up,

I believe that having bad grammar can be to your advantage. Especially if you're marketing to people who speak English as a 2nd or 3rd language.

In many other countries, people speak English brokenly, with many slang phrases and abnormal ways of using English grammar. By adapting yourself to the same level, it can improve communications.

Have you actually tested this? It's one thing using common slang terms, but making deliberate errors just seems a bit patronizing to your readers.

And if you're not careful, you might end up with the sort of phrase you currently have in your sig.

EDIT: I see you've now changed your sig. Probably a wise move.

Yes. I do this always. I have traveled and lived in different countries throughout my life, so it's something that I often have to do to be understood.

For native English speakers, it may seem as if this process involves making deliberate errors in grammar in speaking. However, for people who's native language is not English, speaking with such 'errors' is the norm.

For them, it is the correct way of speaking. And it is speaking without such 'errors' that is 'wrong'.

  • English is my second language and I'm learning as I write more and more in English. I did a presentation once on a cruise ship in Mexico and a lady from Australia was in the audience she walked out and could tell she was very upset.

A few days later we met at the bar and she told me after the second grammar mistake in my presentation her blood boiled and couldn't take it any more. The funny thing is she bought my bootcamp a year or two later and flew in and was very nice. She said my grammar has improved

I know in mastermind groups that I attend, others like me who have no formal education have similar problems like me.

It's tough, but I think with practice it will get better. I just published my first scifi ebook on kindle and working on the second and I did all the edits (I did go over it like 20 times).

In my original language grammar is much much easier then in English, and the spelling is a breeze, since there is no spelling, the way they engineered the language in the 19th century is that you have one sound one letter. Spelling, not grammar is my biggest problem right now.

Steve that would be great, but I get poked on grammar every month or two even that what I say is 99.99% understandable, there is a mistake here or there and people love to point it out. It is what it is and it's true it lowers sales.

I think a grammar lesson here or there could learn us all how to talk good. LOL

Anyhow, one of the problems is that many of us probably don't even know we have made a mistake. Another recurring problem is spelling. Such as the following.

      Please Bear With Me
      Are You Loosing Money?

Another problem is the use of terminology that is not used by other cultures and ages. What is all this stuff about saying something is "sick" when you like it? In my day, it woulda been called "slick".

Seriously, folks, when your sales pitch is lost on someone because they fixate on your stumbling language, you have lost the battle.

      Thanks,

I did a quick search and I found these:

Please bear with me means please be patient while I'm doing something (often for your benefit).

Please bare with me is a sign you might have in your shower. It means please get naked with me.

There was a thread some time back asking for separate sections for different languages. It didn't get any traction.

I never paid attention in English class. I was always reading a paperback. I don't know most of the rules and sometimes I may be misunderstood but I do alright.

You seem to get your point across just fine and I have no problem understanding you. If you are worried about your sales copy you can get Native English speakers to edit it quite cheaply.

As a proofreader/editor/writer myself, I am astounded at the number of errors I come across. People seem to fall into several categories: those who care and want help and some who don't care and think it's fine to have mistakes.

If you want to create a good reputation, REGARDLESS of what you're doing, grammar and spelling is a big part of it.

I have to share one example. I recently helped a doctor with her CV. It was initially 15 pages long and, even with her vast knowledge, she had numerous errors. Once I fixed them, she was very grateful and even paid me a bonus for my good quality work.

Be proud of everything you write and you can't help but be a good example for people you mix with.

(And no, I am not trying to advertise my services. My sig. file does that).

I would love to see a separate section and I would even be willing to help run it.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this.

I just hope one of these days, they will consider having a separate section for this.

I am a Filipino who loves the English language. However, I am still struggling and I know native speakers like you (who have the passion) can help everyone who are also struggling like me.

In fact, I am not sure which one is right between these...

How is everything coming along there in your end? or....

How is everything coming along there on your end?

Again, I just hope we can have a separate English forum.

    Hi Go4,

I would be happy to answer questions.if there was a forum. I have been an examiner for English language certifications.

Unfortunately, because I rely on voice recognition a lot of times my own writing ends up with a lot of grammar mistakes that's caused by the software.

If you're struggling about choosing the correct usage of a phrase between two or more possible alternatives, here's a pretty neat tip:

Simply place the string of text into Google surrounded by quotes. E.g. " coming along there on your end"

Then, do that for the next phrase. Just see which one comes up with the highest number of hits. It's a really quick way of checking. I do that all the time, and we've taught it to our students as well when they are learning Chinese to see if something they want to write is in common use.

"Gotten is probably the most distinctive of all the AmE/BrE grammatical
differences, but British people who try to use it often get it wrong.
It is not simply an alternative for have got. Gotten is used in such
      contexts as:

      They've gotten a new boat. (= obtain)
      They've gotten interested. (= become)
He's gotten off the chair. (= moved)

But it is not used in the sense of possession (= have). AmE does not
      allow

      *I've gotten the answer.

      or *I've gotten plenty.

but uses I've got as in informal BrE. The availability of gotten
does however mean that AmE can make such distinctions as the following:

They've got to leave (they must leave) vs

They've gotten to leave (they've managed to leave)."

I am aware. But I think it is still nice if someone can correct us (non-native English speakers) with the proper grammar.

    ✔ Compliment and complement

Compliment is to say something nice. Complement is to add to, enhance, improve, complete, or bring close to perfection. So, I can compliment your staff and their service, but if you have no current openings you have a full complement of staff. And your new app may complement your website.

For which I may decide to compliment you.

    ✔ Discreet and discrete

Discreet means careful, cautious, showing good judgment; “We made discreet inquiries to determine whether the founder was interested in selling her company.”

Discrete means individual, separate, or distinct; “We analyzed data from a number of discrete market segments to determine overall pricing levels.” And if you get confused, remember you don’t use “discreetion” to work through sensitive issues; you exercise discretion.

    ✔ Elicit and illicit

Elicit means to draw out or coax. Think of elicit as the mildest form of extract or, even worse, extort. So if one lucky survey respondent will win a trip to the Bahamas, the prize is designed to elicit responses.

Illicit means illegal or unlawful. I suppose you could “illicit” a response at gunpoint… but best not.

I think having that English forum (sub forums) is helpful especially for us English is not our first language.

Not just grammar correction but also tips on how to write good sentences and paragraphs will also be covered.

    amicable amiable
    creditable credible

Is there something specific you can always post it and have us take a look at it.

I think we need one. Look at the effect of poor grammar. It dramatically lowers your retention or conversion. Also, it destroys your rep. Best strategy is to get extra eyes. For example, hire editors on FIVERR to go over your copy. Otherwise, you will have many errors on your web pages.

There are many websites and forums for writers, where you can learn everything you want to.

I believe that before making questions you have to study English, or pay an editor and learn with the corrections.

After better studying the English language you can find the right forum and make numerous questions – if they will be necessary.
