English Grammar Forum section

Your idea is not bad but I don't think new section will be built for it on this forum.

There's already a ton (or tonne ;-) ) of those forums online already. I don't see the benefit of adding another one here tbh.

I don't think that is necessary. don't have an English native tongue but when I need to educate myself I just join in other grammar forums.

You could employ someone to check spelling, punctuation and grammar. I doubt that many people would find the time to answer general grammar questions on this forum.

That said, do you need an explanation of the sentences you posted or were they just examples?

It does look bad when someone can't write proper English. But I wouldn't waste my time on it. It's their problem.

Go and look on F.B. and see the level of education there. It's disgusting!

Although grammar is incredibly important when it comes to anything word related (that's probably horrendous grammar right there), but I highly doubt an entire sub-section of the forum will be dedicated to it. I usually don't make grammatical errors, therefore I wouldn't need much "assistance".

That's just my personal opinion though.

I just thought many of our fellow warriors who are not native English speakers including myself might be interested on this.

There are lots of slang expressions that I don't know their meanings.

IMHO the hardest part about the English language for foreigners is using prepositions correctly. I've lived In English-speaking countries for years and I still catch myself making those mistakes from time to time. Your posts are full of them.

The good news is that you're aware of the problem and you want to fix it, that puts you ahead of many, many people. Unfortunately, mastering the English language takes years of practice. So get started! There are many great grammar books out there, start from there and take online tests to measure your progress. Best of luck.

I think it's a good idea, but there are so many online tips and help sites which you can use to improve your grammar.

I believe that having bad grammar can be to your advantage. Especially if you're marketing to people who speak English as a 2nd or 3rd language.

In many other countries, people speak English brokenly, with many slang phrases and abnormal ways of using English grammar. By adapting yourself to the same level, it can improve communications.

English is my second language and I'm learning as I write more and more in English. I did a presentation once on a cruise ship in Mexico and a lady from Australia was in the audience she walked out and could tell she was very upset.

A few days later we met at the bar and she told me after the second grammar mistake in my presentation her blood boiled and couldn't take it any more. The funny thing is she bought my bootcamp a year or two later and flew in and was very nice. She said my grammar has improved

I know in mastermind groups that I attend, others like me who have no formal education have similar problems like me.

It's tough, but I think with practice it will get better. I just published my first scifi ebook on kindle and working on the second and I did all the edits (I did go over it like 20 times).

In my original language grammar is much much easier then in English, and the spelling is a breeze, since there is no spelling, the way they engineered the language in the 19th century is that you have one sound one letter. Spelling, not grammar is my biggest problem right now.

Even though grammar is an important part in a good communication I don't think that this is the place for doing this.

Can someone point out a few forums for English grammar, where they are members and find them good? I can always search on Google, but a recommendation here will cut short the time to shortlist and choose.

I think thats a good idea especially for non-native english speakers this will be very helpful!

There was a thread some time back asking for separate sections for different languages. It didn't get any traction.

I never paid attention in English class. I was always reading a paperback. I don't know most of the rules and sometimes I may be misunderstood but I do alright.

You seem to get your point across just fine and I have no problem understanding you. If you are worried about your sales copy you can get Native English speakers to edit it quite cheaply.

As a proofreader/editor/writer myself, I am astounded at the number of errors I come across. People seem to fall into several categories: those who care and want help and some who don't care and think it's fine to have mistakes.

If you want to create a good reputation, REGARDLESS of what you're doing, grammar and spelling is a big part of it.

I have to share one example. I recently helped a doctor with her CV. It was initially 15 pages long and, even with her vast knowledge, she had numerous errors. Once I fixed them, she was very grateful and even paid me a bonus for my good quality work.

Be proud of everything you write and you can't help but be a good example for people you mix with.

(And no, I am not trying to advertise my services. My sig. file does that).

I would love to see a separate section and I would even be willing to help run it.

I would be happy to answer questions.if there was a forum. I have been an examiner for English language certifications.

Unfortunately, because I rely on voice recognition a lot of times my own writing ends up with a lot of grammar mistakes that's caused by the software.

If you're struggling about choosing the correct usage of a phrase between two or more possible alternatives, here's a pretty neat tip:

Simply place the string of text into Google surrounded by quotes. E.g. " coming along there on your end"

Then, do that for the next phrase. Just see which one comes up with the highest number of hits. It's a really quick way of checking. I do that all the time, and we've taught it to our students as well when they are learning Chinese to see if something they want to write is in common use.

Some people ought to know that the word "gotten" does not make sense.

✔ Compliment and complement

Compliment is to say something nice. Complement is to add to, enhance, improve, complete, or bring close to perfection. So, I can compliment your staff and their service, but if you have no current openings you have a full complement of staff. And your new app may complement your website.

For which I may decide to compliment you.

✔ Discreet and discrete

Discreet means careful, cautious, showing good judgment; “We made discreet inquiries to determine whether the founder was interested in selling her company.”

Discrete means individual, separate, or distinct; “We analyzed data from a number of discrete market segments to determine overall pricing levels.” And if you get confused, remember you don’t use “discreetion” to work through sensitive issues; you exercise discretion.

✔ Elicit and illicit

Elicit means to draw out or coax. Think of elicit as the mildest form of extract or, even worse, extort. So if one lucky survey respondent will win a trip to the Bahamas, the prize is designed to elicit responses.

Illicit means illegal or unlawful. I suppose you could “illicit” a response at gunpoint… but best not.

I think having that English forum (sub forums) is helpful especially for us English is not our first language.

Not just grammar correction but also tips on how to write good sentences and paragraphs will also be covered.

Is there something specific you can always post it and have us take a look at it.

I think we need one. Look at the effect of poor grammar. It dramatically lowers your retention or conversion. Also, it destroys your rep. Best strategy is to get extra eyes. For example, hire editors on FIVERR to go over your copy. Otherwise, you will have many errors on your web pages.

There are many websites and forums for writers, where you can learn everything you want to.

I believe that before making questions you have to study English, or pay an editor and learn with the corrections.

After better studying the English language you can find the right forum and make numerous questions – if they will be necessary.
