Hey,

I'm interested in switching from managed hosting to VPS (HostGator, probably) for better site performance, and I was wondering how complicated it is to host on a VPS? I'm not too knowledgeable in this sector as I've never used them before. Would I have problems in setting everything up and maintaining it, or is it pretty straight forward?

Also, if anybody has recommendations for VPS that's better than HostGator, please feel free to namedrop. I used WP Engine before and even HostGator's shared hosting (not VPS) sites have a better response time from almost anywhere apart from Texas, I think.

You can actually contact the host you're planning to migrate to and see if they can help you do the move for you. That's what I do whenever I'm moving a site from a different host to HostGator. I believe most hosting would be more than happy to do it for you

Thats true if you are willing to go for VPS hosting its alway good to go with Managed VPS hosting.

Hostgator ? are you sure if you read recent reviews about them , truely they are not the company they where couple of years back before EIG purchased them. Best is to avoid the,

Managed VPS isn't much different than managed shared.

If you want to go unmanaged as a means of getting more performance for the same money at the sacrifice of done-for-you management, Linode and DigitalOcean are two popular choices right now.

Exactly. Just make sure that the Managed VPS includes a control panel and is fully supported. If done correctly, you'll get the same easy to manage shared hosting account experience, but with the power of a VPS. If you're inexperienced you do not want to mess around with managing your VPS via command line.

If that's the case, I might reconsider.

Let me put it this way. WP Engine's Personal plan (30/month) vs. WP Engine's Professional plan (99/month) compared to managed VPS (40-60/month). How much better would a managed VPS hosting for that kind of price perform against something like managed WordPress hosting? I believe for the price, you would usually get no more than 1 Core and 512-1GB RAM; space & bandwidth will be enough regardless.

Currently new website, and I don't expect a lot of traffic for the first year. I do want fast speed of the website tho as I'm tired of HostGator's response times which are too slow (although uptime is great - 100% almost always).

If you don't need more than a core and 1GB memory, I think a good quality shared hosting account would fit your requirements and it would be less expensive than a vps. Contact hosts and ask them their resource limits.

    Hello TLondon,

We enjoy responding to threads about web hosting because it's kind of a hobby to browse web hosting offers and learn about the industry.

Typically you would be best to go with a cPanel managed VPS where you'd look around $25-$100 for a good VPS.

    Some that we've tried are:
MDDHosting - Good servers (reliable and speedy). Michael who runs the show there really cares. a little higher on costs too though
HostDime - reasonable option, good support
Site5 - We got their reseller plan and it's pretty good

Some others you may want to look into although are:
    - StableHost
    - HawkHost

    Hope it helps

If you need a VPS, then use a host that has a solid reputation for VPS hosting.
    For example: LiquidWeb, Knownhost, WiredTree

Do not use Hostgator. They're a shared-only host, and they're not even any good at that anymore. Their VPS are a "me too" offering, and they have no expertise in VPS hosting. Furthermore, it's overpriced for what it is, and runs 2000s-era OpenVZ UBC. In laymen's terms, that means a "2gb" VPS is only about 512mb usable RAM. At minimum, you want a VPS based on Xen, KVM, OpenVZ vswap, or Virtuozzo. The Virtuozzo hosts are cheaper (WiredTree, Knownhost), but the Xen.KVM hosts are better (LiquidWeb, Veerotech, Namecheap, Site5).

I know, info overload. But that's what you need, right?

The other option is semi-dedicated/enterprise hosting. The power of VPS, but still shared hosting. Look at Stablehost or MDD Hosting for that.

I very recently upgraded my hosting from shared to VPS, and the process couldn't have been easier. Company did all the migration itself. CPanel is practically the same. Plus the support by phone is lightning fast as they have dedicated techs available for VPS clients.
